Dude Roma Victor could have been awesome, in fact a Roman MMO would rock!

I remember being like 13 and seeing Roma Victor and thinking "so some players are slaves and other players are nobles, and being a guard actually has a purpose." I mean isn't the idea of a simulation based MMO based off Rome awesome?

I mean it's also like in Mount and Blade napoleonic wars when people play a musician which has no attack power or buffing ability, but they can play an instrument annoy the hell out of people.

Basically you wouldn't play a game like this to always win but rather to play a roll. And idk I find that awesome.

Venus Rising (Roman based MMO) is still in the making.

It's going slow though - the step into beta was scheduled for Christmas but I don't actually expect it before Easter to be honest.

Still, when I run around the tutorial island I always feel that the style and Alex's ideas have lots of potential.

Just join a roll playing guild in AoC and you have what you just described.

I've actually always wanted, and even discussed it with gaming friends a few times over the years, an ancient Greek or Roman based mmo. There's no need to come up with a huge amount of the story just take from the amazing mythology that already exists.

Too much to hope for it seems, too many established IP's to fuck up each year.

One came out Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising. Problem is the game looked AWESOME in development, then the company quit working on it and closed down. Years later someone else bought it and brought it back to life but it was already old, buggy and incomplete at launch and quickly died. It had some really fun and neat features though including different combat animations based on the size/type of enemy you fought and minions to let you basically build your own legion that you could take up to 4 with you in the field.

Also, not an MMO but if you like Mythology and can handle a few bugs:

    Loki, Diablo meets mythology.

I was in the beta for Gods and Heroes, back when betas were still betas.  The game was never not broken, but the minion system was fun and the combat challenging.   Still, I couldn't see paying a sub to play it, even when it went F2P it wasn't polished enough to earn my interest.
