At its most basic level, Darkest Dungeon is a Gothic themed side-scrolling turn-based RPG that emphasizes the psychological stresses of dungeon crawling. Ever wonder what’s going on in the head of your Demon Hunter as she explores the nightmarish depths of Hell in Diablo 3? Surely, our heroes are tough – but at some point all of this horror must take a toll, right?

i will never understand how "best indie rpg 2014" can be given to a game with no more than 20 minutes of playable content...
not that the game doesn't seem like an interesting prospect, but if it isn't even in early access, i'm not sure i'd consider it a game in the context of handing out awards...
there goes the hype train, have fun on your way to oblivion
Here is the problem ..previews,early ones are setup and ONLY or i should say USUALLY setup with restrictions on who gets them and what they can say.So in other words biased. However watching the Pcgamer guy play it he does not sound very excited almost like he is forcing himself to play it.Then the infamous cover up "i like the art style" in other words a nice way of saying cheap graphics.
As to pointing out EQN won an award i side with the other poster,it doesn't make it right it only reaffirms twice a MUCH too early award for not enough to go on.
Now in this case however, they got to play a build of the game so there is a more hands on knowledge ,in case of EQN they don't have enough to go on but the little we have seen i guess is enough to get mildly excited but still not enough actual game to give out awards.
The other obvious was mentioned by the OP,"you may not have heard of this game",true that and probably for good reason.GOOD games usually make it into the news average games do not.It does not really PROVE anything as i love games that others don't so it never makes it right or wrong.
However one more VERY important thing that bothers me.On their site they stoop kind of to low standards posting a video review by someone who they claim "Got their hands on an early build",no they didn't happen to come by that ,they were given it with the intention of a favorable review.
If they want to some credibility on their game they SHOULD be posting a review by an outsider or someone we may trust as an unbiased review.
Personally i have watched a few side scrollers on Twitch of late and purchased a few,i feel others like myself are just buying these out of boredom,i have not finished one of them,i get bored of them quickly, one example was Child of Light.
The game play looks very archaic, like Phantasy Star or any older FF game ect ect.Teh graphics are very low poly static background graphics. The characters all have the same colors very low end design work. What the game seems to thrive on is some different type strategy on ordering and claiming several classes i believe 16.I still could not see me remain interested in this game for a very long time, more like 20 minutes a day for a few days.
We as gamer's have been striving for something MORE and with MM Ocharacteristics, this game is a step backwards adding to the thousands of single player games we already have out there and not as good as many other choices
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
kickstarter backers are expected to get early access today

This game looks like alot of fun... Good job doing a pre-review of a game alot of people have probably never heard of... Would love to see more of these kind of previews on this website.
As far as the game goes the only bit of a let down i have with this upcoming title is the lack of Visual custmization and loot. From what i have read when you upgrade characters ie get new loot nothing changes appeareance wise on your charcter. I really feel this was HUGE mistake by the devs to leave out a feature so many people love about these kind of games.
Aloha Mr Hand !
Seriously, an antiqued side scroller with graphics out of the 80's?
Despite the supposed deep strategy, it does not look appealing in any shape or form. There were games in the 80's that were better than this.
There is nothing 80's about the art design.
The game looks essentially like a graphic novel. There's no reason why this type of art design can't be from '80s/2015 or 2020.

Out of the 80s? Tell that to Telltale Games. I like cell shaded graphics. (oh - and color, just for you!)
For those complaining about art style, get in your ehad its all subjective. You don't like...thats just..like your opinion man. To me, it looks fantastic. Too bad for you, move on to something you like.
Side scrollers/retro-esque gaming has becoming a powerful and healthy genre by itself and thats a damn good thing. More variety for us to choose from. I've having a lot of fun playing side scrollers nowadays or games thats inspired by games of yore...and some have a much deeper and more complex gameplay by anything so-called "modern games", that are usually simplified to cater to the lowest common denominator. They usually don't feel rewarding.
LoL I stopped visiting the site for almost a year when this happened... I came back for the community...

Why? What is a better use of time? Collecting imaginary items that do not exist so you can build a pile of virtual items that noone nor yourself care about or playing a game that rewards you with what you have attained by making it useful to the gameplay elements so you can progress and get drawn deep into the game mechanics.
I really don't get the big problem with perma death when it lends itself to creating a deeper and more satisfying sense of accomplishment as opposed to the feeling of owning a bunch of useless loot that is just hoarded and never used. It's about the journey and the experience/interaction not the destination.
This has challenge and yes I will enjoy it, thanks.
I play alot of rogue-likes and Most have no visual customization of loot .. minimal if any at all usually , and fans of that genre generally arent looking for it or expect it or care
At least there looks like some potential here. I now hate the term rogue-like though. I bought The Binding of Isaac last month and holy crap was that a mistake. Game feels like 1987. I bought it because I read this..
"The Binding of Isaac is a randomly generated action RPG shooter with heavy Rogue-like elements."
I wouldn't call that one an RPG. Ugh, what a rip. I should have watched some gameplay videos but the game was so highly rated as the best thing ever I didn't bother. This looks like it's going to actually deliver in the RPG section.
Looks very promising. The artwork really inspires a feeling of foreboding, yet still has some cutesy elements like big heads on its characters. About time there's a party-based Roguelikelike dungeon crawler. Those who've played it in early access seem very happy with the game.
Underrated Post.

To defend the 80s, many of those games presented more content and challenges then any AAA maxed out graphics game today. :P
"going into arguments with idiots is a lost cause, it requires you to stoop down to their level and you can't win"
Eh, he's just one of those folks who spent a ton of cash on a rig, and feels that if a game doesn't justify his purchase with mind-blowing graphics, it isn't worth playing. An archetype all too common within the Glorious PC Gaming Master Race.
Speaking of 80's games, know what this game reminds me of? Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord. While Wizardry didn't have the psychological aspects, many other similarities are present. One example is how at first, you stick with short forays into the dungeon(s). Don't travel too far, and try to grab some loot and XP before scurrying back to the safety of town. Play it safe, but temper that with the knowledge that you need to progress with each foray, both in power and wealth. Both games feature permadeath, although Wizardry is a bit less hardcore about it, giving a chance for revival for a sum of coin, which either fails, succeeds, or Epic Fails (oh, the wails of anger upon seeing a beloved character 'reduced to ash').
The game is very promising, and while fun in its current state, definitely needs polish and tuning.
Oh, and the review on site? The reviewer 'got his hands on' a copy from the developer themselves, as did many content creators on Youtube and Twitch.tv. They've had access for a while now, as part of a publicity program to spread the word about this game. It's very well publicized, nothing shady about it.
Can't wait for my next day off to put more than a couple hours into the game.
AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!

i must say mmorpg.com is full of graphic whores.
Nice grafics means NOTHING!
A good game can also be buttugly
Ugh, just found out today that the game isn't finished yet. It's being released as early access today on Steam. They don't expect the full version ready until 2nd half of 2015. A shame as I was really looking forward to playing it today, but now I have to wait maybe half a year or more.
I find the artstyle of Darkest Dungeon to be one of the best looking games of 2014-2015 !!
And yes nice "Graphics" does mean something ...It actually does "nice Graphics" and or artstyle means alot to the overall feeling of a game naturally so does gameplay
Even retro styled games has to have some charm or they WILL be disregarded quickly, and DD has alot of charm going for it , what it doesn't have is high demanding super Graphics , but that is just a hardware issue..:) and has nothing to do with artstyle.
