Trolling destroyed my game.

I play a game that requires communication between players.  I'm guessing about 90% of the player base will never even look on the forums.  They aren't playing the game correctly because they don't have anyone to show them the in's and out's.  I joined the forums and was there a month before I got trolled by a small contingent of elitist noobs with self esteem issues.  There is an overall attitude that if you want to stay sane stay away from forums.  I can't help but agree after some of the rug burns I've received.  But it's not healthy for an mmo when we players don't talk to each other in a civilized manner.

"Playing the game correctly" for this consists of renting followers and giving them a decent rating and not getting them killed.  There are all kinds of ways to do this but no one is talking so no one learns.  In other words, people are playing halfaszed.  They don't know they are suppose to be rating followers of active players.  Most quit the game in frustration not understanding simple mechanics they would have enjoyed if they only knew.

You're going to ask what game I'm playing.  I'm not saying.*  It will start an argument on if it's an mmo or not.  I've already decided it is.  Not discussing it.  My topic applies to all mmo's.  Forum trolls destroy mmo's.

If people are leaving the game because they are frustrated with ingame mechanics then that's what killed your game.

That has nothing to do with trolling..

You refused to discuss whether your game is an MMO or not. Yet you are willing to talk to trolls on your game's forums and let them lead you into flame wars? Ignore 'em

I'm having difficulty imagining why rating other players' followers would be fun gameplay.  If it's not fun, that's be a pretty good reason not to do it if you can avoid it.  Beyond that, the fact that the game itself apparently doesn't give enough feedback for players to learn these various techniques for success is a problem with the game, not the players.  Forums are cool, forum trolls suck, but it sounds like the game itself has problems.

if a game cannot be learned without talking to another player, it is not worth playing to me.

Ignore 'em. Help the people that are willing to listen and accept your help. You gotta make a positive reputation for yourself. Once done, any player that's worth anything as a human being will respect you and defend you against trolls. With enough people unwilling to take the trollbait they can easily be ignored outright.

I think the problem with this game is that it does not state it clearly enough. If its really that important to communicate and rent / rate followers, and people don't do it, it means the game fails to do its job. It should promt the user to do the right actions, display some info and notify them often if they do it wrong...

Hard to make heads or tails of this without more context. Play the game correctly.. I have trouble swallowing that blindly. You can't have any meaningful debate without context. In other words, what game?

And yet there are people who will defend a bad game to their death. We all have an opinion. image

Who's to say you're playing the game correctly?  There is no *correct* way to play a game, there is only play.  The moment you feel you need to correct them when they didn't ask for your advice, you became the troll.  If they want your advice, they will ask for it.  And as you say, 90% of them aren't on the forums, it is safe to assume they aren't asking for your advice.

The great thing about forums is no one can really argue with you. You pretty much can state your case and ignore whatever they bother to reply with so trolling really is a myth for the most part.
