Dying to check out Origins of Malu? Your chance is incoming as the team is ready to put servers online for a couple of hours on Saturday, February 7th. There are keys up for grabs and no NDA in place for the event. Developers are quick to point out that this is neither the MMO release build nor the final early access build that will roll out on Steam later this spring. According to the post on the Origins of Malu forum, early access should kick off very soon after this weekend's event.

I can say that image does not represent what the game looks like ingame. It is anything but cartoony looking
Lot's of images on the steam store page at http://store.steampowered.com/app/339530/
The game is being released in three phases. The first phase v1 is a battleground style large scale multiplayer setup. This phase is to test the combat out. See what people think, how the combat handles under a very large number of people, ect.
From there we will roll into phase v2 within afew months (asap) and it will feature character persistence and progression. Among a long list of other features (House Building, Trade Skills, Mobs, ect.) Phase 2 is where the MMO side of everything will be developed out (Alot of it is already being worked on as I type this).
Phase 3 will be the final retail release of the game. (No more wipes, ect.)
Hyper realistic games are tough because things have to look and move the exact way you'd expect them to in reality or your brain automatically goes "GAH that looks so fake!!!". It's harder to stay competitive especially when you have massive developers doing realism better than any smaller or indie developer could ever dream of.
For MMOs particularly there is the issue of longevity. The original Doom was a realistic looking game for its time. Does it really matter that it doesn't look realistic anymore? No, but when you're hoping that people are going to play your MMO for the next 10 or 20 years you want it to age a little more gracefully. EQ2 is a prime example. It was pretty cutting edge when it launched, but some of the technologies they used are so out dated now and the "realism" we thought was really neat back then just looks awkward by today's standards. Though some things do still look good in that game.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
This is very old graphics, i have sent a note for it to be updated, www.originsofmalu.com

Damnit if I didn't have a full-time job and a newborn baby, I'd definitely give this game a go. It looks cool.
Server is up!
That actually looks quite nice.

The honesty in that video compels me to at least try it out, even if it smells like another Counterstrike with Elves masquerading as an mmorpg.
