Monster Hunter 4: Ultimate: The Original BAMs

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is the newest addition to the long running and wildly successful Monster Hunter franchise from Capcom. The game does not take long to thrust you into the action with one of the biggest threats you’ll face making its appearance at the onset. In the opening minutes you are sailing the high seas made of sand and are pursued by a gigantic dragon that can also swim in the sand! He puts the sarlacc to shame.

I'm not really a console/action fan, but I had plenty of fun with the MH games - true, on PSP, not on DS. The BAMs and their mechanics are fun, and the multiplayer option was a nice addition too. (I think when RaiderZ launched there was a thread here about the comparison and I posted there that RaiderZ is closer to MH than Tera :) )

Nice review Rob, and if Suzie will fix the link probably more folks could read it too image

    edit: oh, it's fixed now

I am very biased, because I absolutely love the Monster Hunter series, but I do feel that the size of the areas actually add to the game. It is not a confined space, but you need to know how to use your surroundings to fight because you do not have a massive area to kite. Imagine it was all one big zone... you would just take the monster to the place you feel most comfortable fighting it. The way it is now, the monster decides how it is going to battle you. When battling, you are NOT doing a lot of zoning. Only if you fail to paint the monster and have no idea where you are going, will you have some type of issues. But that is a hunter problem, not a developer problem.

As for the controller... I agree. The Nintendo portable system was never how this game was intended to be played. PsP, and Vita would have been the optimal way to play. At least the new 3ds will come with a secondary stick (little protrusion), so hopefully that will make it better. I can make due with the lock on, but nothing is quite as good as using your right thumb to move the camera where you need it.

Also... how is the friend system a "game" problem ^_^

I guess that is as close to a perfect review I can expect though :-P

tbh: fuck capcom when it comes to monster hunter.

    a) unreasonable platform hopping ps2-psp-wii-wiu-3ds, why no mh4 for wii u ?

    b) constantly messing witrh network modes (mh3 wii version in jp was perfect)

    c) refuse to localize some versions (mh3p was localized by pirates)

oh well and raiderz wasnt even close to anything related to mh

Nintendo put them under contract and "stole" them from Sony. This is the last iteration of the game that can be exclusively Nintendo, so moving forward they will be able to do multi-console releases. Which means MH for Xbox, Playstation and hopefully finally a PC version for the west. They couldn't release MH3P in the west because of the same contract. So, your gripe is ONLY with Nintendo's greed in making Capcom sign an exclusivity contract. (Nintendo is the one that did the networking as well.)

I am pretty sure that the WiiU Version of this game will be released along with all the other consoles, since the Exclusivity agreement is essentially gone.

Thank you for posting something about this to hopefully get more word out there! I plan on buying this directly after release. Can't wait for it!

I don't get the friend code complaint either. In game, you can just send someone a request and they can accept. I've done it a few times.

Me and 2 friends are buying the new 3DS XL with MH4Ultimate soon. Meanwhile we are having a blast playing coop in MH Portable 3rd HD... on PC.

Ive never been a fan of monster hunter games because of the endless grind with the only purpose of making new gear. But ive been enjoying MHP3rdHD so far which is my first MH ever.

I can now see from where Nexon took their obvious repetitive grind inspiration for Vindictus (they just didnt add the fun factor that MH has).
