i've played tons of MMOs and can probably give you some advice. But be more specific first:
1. How much PLAY time would consider to be an "ok" amount to invest prior to attending your first raid?
2. Do you want to play 100% free, or would be ok paying a sub and/or potentially a small fee to bypass low levels. (many older games offer this type of thing now)

Progression and easy - that doesn't seem to go together. I feel like if it's easy, it's not really a progression type of game. Actually if it's easy, it's a waste of time.
Progression and Hard as nails go brilliantly together when there is not a mad rush for gear driven by the fact you either fall behind the gear curve through super fast gearing up, or where gear becomes redundant because the next raid tier +1 appeared.

In eq2, after you hit max level, it'll take about 10 hours of play to get to the point where you're raid ready for the easier content. You can be ready in 30 minutes if you have lots of in-game cash and can buy some of the better crafted gear.
The 10 hours can be somewhat less if you're highly skilled or a lot longer if you're bad or simple choose to go slow.
If you play a highly desired class, a guild may bring you along to easier raids even without gear, but more likely they'll just hook you up with the crafted gear.

Yes. There are plenty of MMO's that will sell you rapid advancement and top tier gear.
The only limit to advancement is the size of your wallet.
