mmorpg's, such a broad spectrum. Having played them from the beginning  to the present I hardly know how to sum it all up. Brave new worlds ? definitely,in their own way, and so filled with happiness,joy,heart-ache and heart-break. Where will this magnificent animal take us next. I was married and played through many of them happily partnered and when my wife passed, after a time, I began to play some others. I guess it is the magic of them, the potential of virtual,make-believe worlds that always drew me and, sometimes still does.

I wonder, how is it for you, what brings you to these magnificent worlds with all their potential. The friends you make, the ones you lose,or lose you,the love you give and/or take, because let's face it,we do put our real selves into them to one degree or another. What is it about the genre that rocks your world ?

To me they're just computer games, played to pass the time agreeably just like any other computer game.  I've been playing mmorpgs since about 1999 and I must have played several dozen of them at the very least.  I wouldn't rate them higher than any other genre of game I play.

I still play mmorpgs for fun but I certainly don't, and never have, "put my real self" into my characters - I must have made hundreds of characters over the years and none of them represented "me" in any way, shape or form.  I never bother to make friends in a game either, just like I don't on Facebook.  That's what real life is for.

well, as the genre has room for all playing styles, I understand of course what you mean, but you have to realize at the same time, that many people have shared part of themselves, their real self in these settings though perhaps over time that is changing ? I don't know, wiser minds than mine could possibly speak to that issue :)  As to facebook etc., same principle I would think.

Thats what it really boils down to.

There should be games for all kinds of players, because all kinds of people want to fill their free time in different ways.  To many people MMOs are just games, because thats all their busy lives allow.  Some have great ambition, while others are like the hobbits of Tolkien's Bag End, enjoying family and the simple things.

In recent years a void has developed for players who are willing to spend many hours pouring their soul into a virtual world.  We've become forum junkies for lack of a better alternative, waiting for a place where our dreams can take flight.

I'd love for another game to come around where things can slow down.  A game where the little things matter, there are mysteries in every direction and I have to work to progress my character in a virtual world.  A place where things are earned, the harshness of the world make friends and alliances a necessity, and every npc has a story that furthers my intrigue and compulsion to explore the surrounding world.
