[Column] General: Six Minecraft Clones That are More Than Minecraft Clones

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

This week I would like to introduce you to several of the best looking Minecraft-esque multiplayer games I have had the fortune to get my hands on, with the exception of Oort Online (I’ve yet to play it.) Honestly, though, it is a bit unfair to refer to these games as Minescraft “clones” or anything as limiting, for a few reasons.

I always get excited about new minecraft clones

but then I remember I don't really like vanilla minecraft, I like the heavy modified builds (ftb, tekkit, etc.) and those are harder to find clones of.

If you don't care much for graphics and more about moddability, then there is no reason to look beyond Minecraft atm. The alternatives severely lack in options (compared to modded Minecraft ofc, not vanilla).

I run a modded Minecraft server with our own created modpack for friends and family and this is always our go to game in between other games. Some of them only play on that server actually. And once in a while I create a new modpack and world.

I really like that this is still possible, running your own server , combining mods that you want. One of my nephews even took up programming because of Minecraft (wants to learn to mod). This leads to endless replayability. Clearly a game created by a gamer.

While other new alternatives for Minecraft are very closed in design. Making you pay for everything and leaving no freedom to set up a server the way you like. Not to mention being dependant on them running a server. To me, this can never be a viable alternative.

Windbourne?!! Really?! This game is abandonware... No update since 7/2014 and pretty much shelved by the devs.

A more appropriate mention would have been Planets3

I find your credibility highly questionable when you recommend games that are pretty much unfinished piles of crap that have been discarded by their devs due to lack of funding.

Space Engineers is the best Minecraft replacement I've found, tons of stuff you can build and create, and sci-fi themed.

Starmade is an awesome space game that deserves a mention. Build any kind of ship you like, mine, craft, pvp, be the borg...Your server so your rules.

I've been playing since Xmas ans am having the creatively good time.

    There is NO miracle patch.

95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch.

    Hope is not a stategy.

Agreed on Space Engineers, really really great game and fits in the Minecraft-like catagory.  Planets Cubes is also looking very good, we helped fund it early and it's been fun to watch the progression.

Hey, cool, sandbox games. I guess they're "Minecraft clones" now. What didn't we like about "Minecraftlike" or "Impact" or "Emergent"? Eh, at least a few more people know, now, to what I referred. Would like to see positive moves in this genre.

No mention of planet explorers which blows pretty much all of these games out of the water in most ways?

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

    A. Proven right (if something bad happens)

    or

    B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

No mention of Terraria? My wife and I love Terraria and prefer it over Minecraft. The only other on this list I have heard of was Trove and I found it bland at best.

  • GilnidorGilnidor Member UncommonPosts: 115
Really need to add Creativerse to the list. It smacks many of the games on that list on the fingers.

yea windbourne being on this list really threw a red flag so 30 bucks for a dead in the water game is worth it....I can't even right now.

I love planet explorers - but it's a single player game.

Its not just single palyer it has multiplayer as well and a few different multiplayer modes to boot.

Hopefully our game Astral Terra will be at a good enough state soon that we might be considered for a list like this. Thanks for the article and the links!
