Kickstarter Game Developer Unresponsive

The likely future of many crowdfunding games.

It's disappointing, but inevitable for some. Remember, you give these people money on promises, nothing more. If they want to go off on a drug-fueled bender in Tahiti with your money, saying, "sayonara", to the project, you've agreed to these terms under the "no guarantee" clause.

I hope the popularity of crowdfunding loses steam quickly.

edit: Incidentally, it's still available on Steam http://store.steampowered.com/app/263440/ , so it wasn't "just" Kickstarter money.

Steam early access games at least have honest disclaimer telling that there's no guarantee the game will get any updates, and if you're not happy with the game at its current state do not buy it.  Steam buyers were already delivered the product they purchased and there isn't any problem with that.

I thought I remember reading somewhere that if a kickstarter project fails to meet the development update roadmap it originally laid out that you could take action against them?  I guess not.  I'm more sad for the talented indie companies who won't have their projects funded in the future because of things like this than I am for the investors out of their money.  People can only read so many of these stories before they become jaded to the entire process of crowdfunding.   Maybe that's how it should be though.

I have said it since the start of crowd funded games. There is going to be a backlash from this and its coming one day soon. Just waiting for a project like CU to fail or not meet the expectations of the majority. Ooo the nerd rage will be fun to watch.

Yes there are actually several of these games still up for sale on Steam but have not received any updates for like a year, that is really shotty business work.I started to notice all the scams when i was searching through the MANY Zombie survival games.

Create an early concept, promise the world, make a ton of cash, the rest is history.I am like 100% positive, not one single kickstarter/crowd funded game will turn out Triple A.

It is also AAA studios as well,i call H1Z1 as bs on early development, that game is about  90% of what you get by time they claim it is finished. They know the people that were going to pay into it already have, there is very little money coming in the future and they know it.

I stick by Square Enix, they don't run cash shops, they don't make broken promises and their games are solid,i can't say that about any other developer.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

I read they have a cash shop where you can buy dye and mounts and convert RL money into Crysta

I think the temptation is really strong for some independent developers to say they have all this free money now what will I do with it.  Some follow through and some may spend it on themselves mostly.  Unless the dev is a friend of yours you are giving your money to a stranger, who may just be talking a good game.  Some may have good intentions and just take on more then they can handle.

I seen a report that was tracking crowd funded games. Only 30% of all crowd funded games at this point release. Of that 30% how many are good games?

Yeah, with rare exception I've always been very careful which kickstarters I give money to.

Actually looking back through the list, all the ones I was confident of (and sometimes donated extra) ended up great (Defense Grid 2, Sunless Sea, and SolForge) and the one I wasn't confident of (and donated very little) still hasn't really produced an interesting game for me (Castle Story.)  So that was the rare exception.  It's not that i didn't get anything (the alpha is playable), it's just that I didn't get anything fun.

I also backed a telescope they shot into orbit but uh...it literally blew up in the rocket it launched in.  Damnit, haha!

I still think it's a great process, and will continue backing projects that interest me.  But there's always a chance these projects don't make it, and that's much more true of unproven developers.
