General: NCSoft -Netmarble Deal Attempts to Stop Nexon Takeover

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

NCSoft has signed a new deal with Netmarble in an effort to stave off a potential hostile take over attempt by one of its largest shareholders, Nexon. With the stock trade between the two gaming companies, NCSoft has erected a shield against Nexon.

Last week, we reported that tension between Nexon and NCSoft were mounting and that the potential for aggressive action on the part of Nexon existed due to differences in each company's philosophy with regard to managemet.

We'll keep you posted as this story continues to develop and as the time for the next NCSoft shareholder meeting nears.

NCSoft may have their share of missteps, but Nexon taking over would likely be much worse. Their future should be interesting to those looking forward to games like Lineage Eternal.

I've started liking NCSoft a lot less over the past years, but no one should be taken over by the vile pure pile of trash that is Nexon.

Really hope they make it out alive.

Sorry, but NCsoft closed CoH. Only for that, they deserve my endless hate.

    Plus, Vindictus is amazing.

    Go Nexon Go!

As a Guild Wars 2 player, it would disturb me deeply if Nexon took over.

I would be pissed if i was playing NCSOFT games and saw they were willing to spend more on political agenda than their games.

I looked over that NetMarble and they have literally nothing under their stable,so this is just a waste of money by NCSOFT.Very foolish spending far i am concerned because i doubt NCSOFT has been doing that well to be unloading cash like that.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Considering what happened in GW2 and Wildstar I'd say that Nexon has entirely too much influence as it is so it's good that they are trying  to distance themselves but I think they already have a reputation going both for not listening to their player base and also not delivering on the games they've put out since 2012 over at NCsoft so I don't think that spending this money is going to help their situation much.

This has nothing to do with Nexon US. Nexon KR is such a great company.

Nexon has a shady style of doing business. Things like boxes with random contents for real money can be seen as illegal gambling in some parts of the world. I wish some editor of some website would write something on this aspect.

Um.. GW2 has done this since like a month after launch. Remember the Halloween rng boxes with like a .01 chance to drop skins?

I hope NCSoft gets taken over, after betraying its loyal customers over and over again, especially with the City of Heroes shut down I hope they get taken over. We begged and pleaded, petitioned and raised money to try and stop them from shutting it down but they responded that they didn't care and would shut it down anyways, well guess what NCSoft, we don't care if you get shut down now, GO NEXON!

One theory as to why CoH got shut down and they refused to sell was that by Korean law they would have to reveal how much it was really worth instead of what they SAID it was worth and the two were drastically different. So different that the shareholders would be asking questions the board didn't want to answer. So they did the only thing they could do to cover up their lies and destroyed the game.

If there's a take-over the actual numbers might come to light and we'd get a better sense of if the millions offered to buy CoH was enough, not enough, or (likely) too much.

They close a game that wasn't making enough money and you think Nexon is going to improve that climate? I'm sorry you lost your MMO home, but this is way worse than NCSoft.

The game was making a profit. NCSoft closed the game to do some accounting voodoo for the shareholders meeting. Nexon can't make things worse and if they do, it just might encourage people that businesses change their practices and show some respect to their customers.

Now, I understand the anger of you CoH players but my guild on GW1 had one clear statement about this:

"I am worried that a hostile takeover could result in closing our game"

You guys know what it means to lose the own game so keep in mind that it will be mostly loyal players who will suffer from this.

Erm - You DO realize that Nexon forces was at play here? Specifically Crystin Cox, the "black witch of monetization" that Nexon more or less forced upon Anet...

    Some background.

More Nexon and I will probably forget all about the coming GW2 expansion - They have hurt the game enough as it is!

We dont need casuals in our games!!! Errm... Well we DO need casuals to fund and populate our games - But the games should be all about "hardcore" because: We dont need casuals in our games!!!

IT doesn't matter if a property, IP, product, service, etc is making money. What matters is how much money it makes when compared to the same resources being used elsewhere.

Remember, in a publicly traded company, the company's job is to make money for its shareholders. If the company can't justify the expenses/resources because those resources can be used to make the shareholders more money then that's an issue.

And before someone says "stocks/publicly held companies are evil" remember that if you have a 401k, retirement fund, Roth IRA, etc you very well have stocks in something.

Do you want your money to be used to make a "little profit" or "a lot of profit"?

How is increased monetization going to improve a game at all? You want more gambling in your MMO? Maybe we can have more decorative bags and pay-to-not-be-annoyed. But, hey at least you've avenged CoH.

The closing of CoH by NCSoft was the final straw that led me to not trust (and hate) this studio. NCSoft turned me off forever to any game they had or would ever make in the future because I simply quit trusting them not to pull the rug out from under me again. I un-installed GW2 the day I heard about them closing CoH and have never even had thought once since then to re-install it.

The thought of Nexon being worse than NCSoft does not phase me one bit because I long ago made the decision to never buy anything with even a whiff of NCSoft stink on it ever again. If Nexon makes crap games, I won't buy those either.

I hope the guy or group of guys at NCSoft who made the decision to close CoH and then hoard the title in their vault when generous offers to buy it were refused is/are the first ones to get theirs once (if) Nexon takes them over.

    (rubs hands together in anticipation)

    Nexon, release the hounds!

i hope this has shaken up ncsoft and causes them to re-think some things regarding what's important to a businesses success for instance, like making the customer happy ? Bring back CoH, and all will be forgiven :)

"AIDS vs Cancer" is an eloquent statement.

But honestly I couldnt care less about this battle of the greedy suits. At the end of the day, no matter which side of the cesspool wins, the genre isnt going to get any better by either of their existence.

Both of their heads need to roll.
