On the surface it looks ok because at last we have an alternative method to wallet warrioring (nevermind that it's an alpha where testing and feedback are important (but you can only contribute if you spend)). But when you look into it you realise just how rubbish it is.

    a. You have to PvP in your crappy ship vs people who have bought far superior combat ships and in-store weapons / shields to earn your REC

    b. A competitive Super Hornet (base SH, Omni 6s, VD shield) would cost 27,900 REC and take the average player 15.5 hours to earn to rent. For a week. Yeah.... no
Plus, that's assuming average income gain. The post says that income will be directly linked to kill / death ratio, and I remember seeing that SHs currently average 2.5 k/d and starter ships 0.3. So if this system assumes 1.4 k/d = 1800REC p/h, then an Aurora pilot is looking at 72 hours of game time to rent a competitive SH for a week...

    c. If you spend the 16 hours with a good k/d ratio to earn a decent SH loadout you then need to spend another 12 hours to keep it for the following week which brings your playtime to an absolute minimum of 28 hours.

    d. It's pretty obvious that the drive is to make things possible but so long-winded and aggravating that a person would spend (or quit) in short measure.

    e. Chris Roberts - "this will not be a pay to win game."

Hopefully they take the community feedback on-board.

I know this is an slightly old post now but...

watch?v=opMGRIpUbO8 (I can't remember if we're allowed to link or not sooo...)

It's a youtube vid of someone flying an Aurora LN and kicking some serious ass. Yes, they have 2 extra guns, but still. With skill, you can do it. I mean, I personally suck, but damn.

MMO's played: Ragnarok Online (For years), WoW (for a few weeks only), Guild Wars, Lineage 2, Eve, Allods, Shattered Galaxy, 9 Dragons, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Star Trek Online (Got someone ELSE to pay for it), Champions Online (Someone else paid), Dofus, Dragonica, LOTRO, DDO and more... A LOT more. I've played good AND bad. The bad didn't last long. :P

There's definitely some good pilots out there but it's not common to see someone doing that in an LN, as reflected by the leaderboards - the Top 25 is dominated by cash shop fitted Mustang Deltas and Super Hornets.

It would be pretty soul destroying to enter every match knowing you're going to lose and your REC grinding is going to take 3x longer because of it.

I guess you determine the "cash shop fitted" information from the "Preferred weapon" section of the leaderboard ?

Keep in mind that backers got quite a bit of UEC for free over the months, so e.g. I was able to buy some of these weapons for free from the "cash shop" without investing any real world cash.

And with the REC currency i do not have to invest any real world money at all in the near future.  Even if I do not fare well in the first few matches, i soon have enough REC to get me those high end weapons too.

If those matches are so soul destroying, no one would play World of Tanks or World of Warplanes or arena game XXX  ;-)

Two dozen of my friends are playing Wargaming.net games. Most of them at the highest level (up to Tier 10, multiple factions).

Only two of them use real-world-cash-bought extras.

There are various opportunities to get WoT currency by other means than buying (participating in contests, tournaments, events, league fights and clan fights).

The difference being one game is a pay-to-play test with an expiry of earned items while the other games are free-to-play with no expiry.

The difference being that one game is a pay-for-full-game-at-half-price-of-typical-AAA-game-with-extended-testing-phase-included-if-you-want  and the other games are  a micro-transaction-traps-if-you-are-the-impatient-type.

Nice dodge, but if your story were in any way representative of the general state of things. how come Wargaming.net is earning that much money?

    Because of that -->

"As of December 2013, there are 75,000,000 registered players worldwide and a 1.1 million peak concurrent players"
