Guild Wars 2: The Revenant Revealed

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The 9th and newest profession being added to Guild Wars 2 with the Heart of Thorns expansion has just been profiled in-depth over at the official site. A Master of the Mists, the Revenant will wield actual spirits from the past of Tyria in his fight against Mordremoth.

ArenaNet has a very long, comprehensive blog post that  explains how Revenants connect to the past via the Mists by being able to access two Legends at a time. One Legend is active, one inactive, with the active Legend determining what skills are present on the right half of the bar. "It’s similar to weapon swapping, but instead it affects your healing, utility, and elite skills."

Revenant weapons are tied to the Legends they wield. They can utilize hammers in new (and fast) ways. Maces and axes become directional weapons that can deal massive amounts of damage as long as players adhere to the way they are facing opponents.

Legends themselves give players new stances, each with attendant boosts to damage or protection:

  • Legendary Demon Stance

  • Legendary Dwarf Stance

Lastly, for this particular article:

New boons, conditions, and status effects have been added to the revenant as well as spread across other professions’ specializations. These are cool ways we’ll allow players to interact with new types of skills in our combat system.

Hmm...maybe this is how they will introduce new weapon skills to the rest of the classes.  We will have to wait and see...

I know right.  The only other game I have seen use taunt for PVP is WAR, which was a step in the right direction.  Anet's idea on how to use it seems like it will be very interesting and fun for my warrior.  I could care less for it's use in PVE though.

Lineage 2 has it too. Locks you on the tank for few seconds unless you are cleansed.

Gw2 has plenty of control, idk why they feel the need to add another one. I guess reverse fear is easy to code. Hope they make it good and not like a choir.

CoH/V used taunt as well, which worked much like Lineage 2's.

Sounds like a much beefed-up Ritualist from the original game, given heavy armor and a hammer.  Might be worth a try.

I'm excited about there being a new class.
But with the Revenant class, I'm definitely interested in the stances.
I think those will be fun to mess with.

I was on the "This sounds like a Rit!" bus at first, too, but the more I'm learning about it the more I'm starting to think the Revenant is looking more and more like a hybrid Rit/Dervish class sans the independent spirits the Rit could pull up.

Oops, I posted my response for the giveaway here - so I'm editing this to just say that I'm pretty stoked about the new Revenant class! It does sound unique and interesting for sure!
