WoW is back to 10 million subs, FFXIV is going gangbusters, SWTOR is raking in well over $100 million a yeah, gw2 is finally putting out an expansion, ESO is about to make a killing in the console market off of low information consumers, the Asian market highly competitive and only set to get bigger...
Awe... but it's dieing... because.... you're bitter about "freeloaders" getting something for nothing?
That's the typical hyperbole you see around this forum. MMOs are dying and full loot non-consent pvp is the only way a new mmo will survive.
Yet, when its time to vote for MMO of the year, it's all themepark games that win the top spots. xD
Which goes to show that even on this site, it's a vocal minority that spams each thread with their nonsense about how full loot, non-consent PvP is the future of the genre. (While completely disregarding how that horrible feature was removed from many of the old MMOs, like UO, for a good reason)
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)
I agree. I think this idea would help developers learn right away which features are worthwhile (people throw money at them).
I suggested this idea for Star Citizen, but after a year and a half they still show no signs of implementing it. On the other hand, a few weeks after my Star Citizen post, Shroud of the Avatar started their offers for crowdfunding specific goals. Sadly, none of the goals has been met, after a long while soliciting donations. Yet they still collect significant donations for the overall game project itself.

Wow had $10 when the expansion got released. FF XIV have sold close to 3 million copies which is impressive but I for one isn't sure how many of those are actually active players now. GW2 and TOR is doing fine at the moment.
You are kinda right but a bit overly optimistic still, there are plenty of leechers in each MMO and the question if people would fork up money for content as well as personal stuff for their toon is not really something we can answer without trying it.
I think GW1s model with expansions and campaigns that comes out often is easier to pull off, but just like GW1 do you need and engine where it is easy to create new content fast and on a limited budget. GW was just made with a handful people and it did great but to be honest did they have Strain as both lead designer and lead programmer and you might need someone like that to pull the thing off.
Interesting idea though, OP but I think that you at least needs to also add expansions to it to pull it off. Or if you use a modern setting you could have billboards with real commercials in the game, it wouldn't affect the gameplay since there are billboards in most places in the real world but you would still get in advertising money.
Alone it probably wont work, or at least that is my feeling but I could see myself donating $20 to a new zone in a game I like.

The main reason this wont work as a model is that content takes too long to create and because most content creation employs a lot of smoke and mirrors to make it quicker and cheaper to make with this model you would remove all of that.
Usual mmorpgs (buy game + play montly fees) still have to add more content (well unless they want to continue to be just a bugfixed version of how the game started for ever) and people still add content to theirs mmorpgs.
Anyway, really thinking about it, this game idea is like those: Pay for the game, no montly fees, we will make expansions you will maybe buy.
The huge difference here is that they are able to see if people will want to buy the expansion before they make it, and people will pre-pay the ENTIRE money needed to make and then get some profit from expansion. And people that didnt paid for the expansion will be able to play it.
On the usual "pay for the game, no fees, pay for expansions if you want", they may end making an expansion few will buy, and so they may not end getting back their money used to make their expansion, getting some profit for the fact they made this expansion.

Very interesting. Thanks for the links!
Oh hell no... if I could get away with expletives... I'd add in about 5 right here.
NO CROWDFUNDING
NO KICKSTARTER
NO TELETHONS
NO PANHANDLING
NO DONATING
If they need that much money to stay afloat, use a subscription or cash shop... that's what they're there for.

I say the way to go is in game product placement.
