I played this game when it first came out and there seemed to be a good population of people. I was wondering on the current state and whether or not it was a good time for anyone to try the game out.
Well it hasn't changed that much feature or population wise since launch. We got a new dance club and some stuff but thats about it, it's a good game but if it didn't hold you then it won't hold you now. Wait till April for Issue 7.
Originally posted by jdun1 The population is much smaller then it was. At its height there were over 3k of people per server. I left six months ago and at prime time there were only barely 800 people playing. Getting a team will be hard.
You haven't played for 6 months and think you can comment on the server population?
Anyway... when I logged on tonight (primetime Saturday night) most of the servers were at medium, couple were low and a couple had high pop. I play on Triumph server and there's always people to team with.. BTW CoH has the best/easiest system ever made for finding teamates and sharing missions bar none.
Originally posted by jdun1 I assumed it gotten worst because a lot of old timer that was playing just move to WoW. I stated when it was first out and I know how fun it was when you were a super hero instead of a common citizen that this game turn out to be. It became normal people in tights and thats why they moving to WoW because at lease it has depth. The server population is down and no fanboys can say otherwise. The game is dead.
You "assume"? I still play the game and stated a "fact" why does this make me a fanboy? Sounds like you are a WoW fanboi to me, now go wait in the queue that you pay $15 a month for.

That same primetime last year would've had all but 2 servers in the red. And the two that weren't would've been in the yellow.
Saturday aftenoon, 2 p.m. PST, showed 560 players on Champion. Primetime on a Saturday on both coasts saw only 560 players on Champion, a west-coast server that used to be red this same time of day.
Current players may not want to hear it, but Emmert's nerfs and CoV are killing CoH, slowly but surely.
One more thing: the low log-in rate is occuring during a free-trial period, and is the only way I know how the servers are stacked (otherwise, I wouldn't be playing right now.) Funny how free-trials were never offered before Issue 4's mega nerfs came down.
Yes the game has been nerfed a lot but name me one MMO that hasn't been. We all knew as soon as PVP was introduced to the game that the nerf bats would start swinging that was a gimme. Let's face it, WoW has taken tons of players from every other MMO that's out there right now, but as I stated in my other post.. there are still people playing and I have no problems finding a team (isn't that what the OP wanted to know)?
One last time for the "slow" people...
Most servers at prime time were at medium load.
2 servers were at high load.
A couple had low.
Play if you want to, don't play if you want. Follow the herds of sheep to WOW and play with all the 1337 kiddies.. I don't give a shit either, I was just answering the OP's question
Guild Wars. Seems Arenanet got it right from the start. Can't say the same for "Statesman" and company.
Update on servers:
All but 2 as of 6 pm EST were green. Other 2 were yellow. Unheard of a year ago for a Saturday afternoon/evening in winter, especially during a free-trial period.

Where the hell did you come up with those numbers? Servers are 2 bubs load almost all the time for many of the servers. Which is medium load, where'd you pull 800 or 3000 people playing from?
Any idea of the population in the two English-speaking European servers?
I think I'll buy CoV to play a bit, if only to get away from the usual themes of the traditional MMORPGs. I remember it was a fun game, just got too repetitive at some points. I assume PvP breaks that repetition though.
Currently playing: * City of Heroes: Deggial, Assault Rifle/Devices Blaster. Server: Defiant. * City of Villains: Snakeroot, Plant/Thorns Dominator. Server: Defiant.

Pulled them from his ass most likely. BTW I was in full 8 man teams all night long while playing lastnight. When a player would quit it took all of 30 seconds or so to find a replacement...doesn't sound like a dead game to me.

Lol I thought Guild Wars is not a MMO? Well I been thinking about playing COH again I updated it and I might get a time card soon. Right now I just checked the Servers. Everything is Yellow accept 1 server(which is green) which is pretty good because they were only used to be 1 or 2 red servers back then and the rest yellow and green. It seems people are more spaced out between servers then before.

Certain NPCs in the zones and using the team search function will tell you how many players are either on-line at the time (NPCs) or within a given zone (team search).
Champion pinged light with @600 players yesterday. There are 11 servers (not counting test). Nine of them were green (light). Even if we give you 1,000 players for every green server and 2,500 for every yellow one, that's 14,000 players on-line when I logged in on a Saturday afternoon.
Last year at this time, you'd have that many players on 5 out of 11 servers. I know. I saw 9 out of 11 servers red last year.
Getting a team is becoming increasingly difficult. And because Emmert's nerfs are geared toward making team play a requirement at the higher levels of the game, there's not much point in hanging around just to solo, as you could in Issue 3. I used to solo my level 50 electric/energy blaster on Invincible, and could take out 2 lvl 53 bosses and a couple of Lts. at once. No more. Emmert's nerfs have seen to that.
People are voting with their feet, as I have. They're leaving in droves because, quite frankly, they're pissed off about the direction the game is taking and there are better games out there.
Fanbois on the CoH site may still think it's the number one game around, but when you look at the MMORPG player-base as a whole (according to people who use this site), it's clearly not number one anywhere else.
Yeah, whatever. The developers call it a "CORPG" (Competitive On-Line Role Playing Game)? The difference between GW and all the others? It's got a great PvP system. Excuse me, but if the difference between an MMO and a CORP is a PvP system, CoH/CoV is a "CORPG", or at least it's trying to be. (Personally, I think PvP sucks).
Stop with the ridiculous distinctions. GW is featured on the MMORPG website along with every other MMO out there.

Yeah, soloing boss spawns like that was immensely FUN. Unfortunately, too many people whined that some builds were too powerful, and started crying that they needed to be nerfed.
I never cared that a Fire/Fire tank could herd 50 minions and lts. and wipe them out. It was cool to watch. I was glad my blaster was a boss-killer. Too bad the game is being designed to placate whiners and fanbois.
Instead of buffing weak builds, they bring everyone down to the same, boring, grinding, UN-fun level. That's why people are leaving. A game about super-heroes that really isn't. IMHO, Emmert's "balance vision" is better suited to a game that doesn't portend to be about super-humans. Quite frankly, I think the guy has done enough damage to the game to warrant his firing, and if I were in a position to do so, he would be fired.
BTW, my current toon's battle cry is "Fire Jack Emmert" When people ask, I tell them who he is and what he's done to the game.

FIRE JACK EMMERT!!!
I can't believe that you could solo 2 bosses along with some other +3 mobs at the same time and don't see how that was overpowered? I play a spines/regen scrapper and used to be able to herd up 50-60 mobs at a time, get them in a corner and kill every last one of them with little effort. Overpowered? Yes!
Now let's say they do as you suggested and made all the other classes just as powerful. All that would do is make everyone overpowered. Then what would the devs do next, probably make the bosses harder or impossible to beat solo. So then what?
Superheroes are meant to be overpowered, that's the whole point.
If you were herding 50-60 badguys, then they weren't even remotely the same level as you, even in I3.
Nerfing people's hard won powers, or even enahncing the weaker builds is just one of a thousand ways in which this game could have been rebalanced should it have needed it.
The Dev's asked if everyone wanted the proposed nerfs. Everyone said "we don't want them".
The dev's nerfed everyone, and now they are looking for new jobs. Serves them right. What a pity the game had to suffer for them to learn this valuable lesson in customer service.
They have also changed hardware and software so the servers can now handle more users at a "green" stage. Plus on weekend night all servers hit a yellow status, which I believe is several thousand users.

Exactly. Notice when I talked about my blaster being able to solo +3 bosses and a couple of Lts. thrown in was when I reached level 50 with him. Not 49. At level 50 your toon should be able to do some pretty amazing thigs, otherwise why spend several hundred hours to get him there?
I want a toon at level 50 that feels like a super-hero, not one that feels like I'm playing a level 5 again!
Ironically, what's the line the game gives you when you ding 50? "Truly you are a Super-hero." Hmmm...maybe they should changed that to "Super-Zero."
I paid $15 to come back to the game after a 7 month lay-off in January to see how the game felt. During that month, I got both a Warshade and a Peacebringer to level 21, and a couple of other alts to 12. The Hollows used to be packed with people on a Saturday afternoon. The Saturdays I was in there on Champion, you could count the number of players on both hands. Looking through the team search, a lot of people cited PvP as the reason they didn't want to be bothered with a team request.
Between PvP, nerfs, and CoV, CoH is a game circling the rim precisely because of the direction Jack Emmert has steered that ship.

I played on the virtue server, which is one of the more populated servers, and i just happened to be playing at my brothers house this weekend and there where 564 people on at 9 pm on Saterday.
