Kickstarter is a massive driving force in game development today. Anyone with an idea and the skills to make it a reality can get their game funded and in the hands of gamers across the world. It’s an incredible time for game development. On the other hand, if a major studio with veterans at the helm want to create their dream project without the constraints that AAA development often entail, they can use crowdfunding to circumvent all of that as well.

You need to do a companion piece to this... "The 5 Most Successful MMO Kickstarter's That Have Released"
Where are the success stories... all I keep seeing is requests for handouts.
Though, I guess it's not as much a mystery like the others...
All I see is lots of hype, not much in the way of that much promise. Guess I am a bit jaded due to past kickstarter results.
It is hard to make it as an indie developer. They all have a chance though. Hopefully at least one will be half decent.
For those anticipating hosting a Shards online server, boy are you in for a rude awakening.....
what about "the stomping land?"

This is why I love this site at times, finding references to interesting games. After reading the Identity Kickstarter campaign I fully agree. At the very least this is one of the most ambitious MMO's I have seen.
I would have never known this type of game was in development. Thanks for the link.

Until recently, I didn't understand how a solid KS campaign can build a community right out of the gate and also work as a marketing tool. I think I actually prefer this method than say, founders packs. It allows the devs to raise capital early and often creates value for the consumer. In Crowfall's case, the game will cost $50 at launch but still has about 1000 early-bird $34 packages that include beta.
Crowfall is the first game that I've ever backed via Kickstarter. I almost forgot to even make an account before the funding opened. I've also supported Shroud of the Avatar and Star Citizen, but both after the KS was over.
This is a great idea, I will look into doing this for sure (if enough games even exist yet!)
Seems you missed Pantheon: Rise of the fallen!
The game that will bring the challenge that only eq had at the beginning! The world is oversaturated with hand holding games.
It's Kickstarter failed though. Not trying to be mean, but I think a successful Kickstarter was at least one requirement.
Sandbox pve..... Where I have to impact my world by interacting with NPCs? Thus the story is written based on these interactions...... Sounds like a themepark to me.
I am having fun with Divinity Original Sin and Darkest Dungeon (not even a backer with either). Granted they are not mmo, but shows there is potential in crowd funded games. Some will succeed, others will fail. Thats to be expected but the way games are getting made the way devs rly want them to be is just refreshing.
I put kickstarter money in Camelot and cannot wait to see what its like. Crowfill im defently gonna look into when's its raleased
Wait there Pathfinder onlnie on this list but no The Repopulation ? The repopulation had 2 kickstarter campaigns and got funded both times.. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/therepopulation/the-repopulation plus they have made more cash over the months by allowing people to back on their website.
The game is coming along very well and you will see it finished before any of the others in this list.
You what ? I think the majority of the games I had fun with last year got funded via kickstarter..
What people have to understand ... it takes at least 4 years to make a modern high end game (what some people call a Triple-A title). Just because we supported games on Kickstarter does not make them reality within a few months. Patience is the keyword here. After maybe 2 years we get something to Alpha and Beta Test. After around 4-5 years the final result will be sold. Those who demand a fully fledged, perfectly tested and expertly balanced game within 6 month need to do a reality check.
And yes, the list is a good reminder of what games we did NOT have on our radar yet. Need to check out Camelot Unchained (anything following DAoC in spirit is worth looking into).
Have fun
Kick starter has only been really utilised for MMOs for the last 2 years, most MMOS out there had a 5 year dev cycle.
We are only just starting to see the fruits of kickstarter in the single player world (Shadow run online, Hand of Fate, War for the Overworld, Project eternity, wasteland 2) to name a few that have launched or are so near to launch it doesnt matter.
If we are generous and assume most kickstarted mmos were 2 years into the dev cycle it will be 2016 / 2017 before we start to see any of them actually launch.
But people knew that when they backed the games, having done their research rather than just making an emotive nostalgia driven decision right?..... right?
I agree they are all notable games to watch for but in case of Star Citizen ,it has received more news from it's funding than the actual game.I tried watching a few SC streamers and to be honest, boring as heck.IMO unless you completely sold on that type of game being in your portfolio ,i don't see it attracting anymore than the same Eve like crowd.
So far i am on the fence, nothing yet looks good enough to pry me away from FFXI,there is just too much content and ideas in FFXI,it is tough to see any game taking over my attention. However i do spend time playing a couple other games on and off one of these might be in my rotation.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Can't wait for crowfall -
When will mmorpg.com start giving more keys
There is at least one article per month on SotA. There have been regular updates on Pathfinder. Camelot Unchained has had a number of articles when they were releasing interesting information and now that they are about to kick off their alpha I'm sure you'll see more.
