PvE games with a harsh death penalty?

fivetigersfivetigers Member UncommonPosts: 208

In the vast majority of the MMORPGs that I've played, dying usually ranges from a slight inconvenience to a slight annoyance, and on occasion will actually frustrate me.  That being said, there is typically no real loss from dying.  The most fun I ever had in an MMORPG was back in the day playing Asheron's Call when if I died, there was a good chance that  I was probably going to drop some of my gear, and in addition to losing your gear you would be temporarily gimped losing up to 40% of your skills/stats.  Basically you didn't want to die.  And if you did die, you HAD to get back to your corpse, or lose some of your gear.  Yeah this sucked pretty hard on occasion, but what it really did was add a level of excitement and accomplishment that is missing from most games now.  The game could really get your heart pumping.  If you almost died out if the middle of nowhere you'd be thanking the gods that you were able to flee with only 10 HP left, or you'd be bragging to your friends about how, through skill and luck,  you were able to slay an overpowered mob all by yourself while almost dying in the process, or you'd be begging some higher level players to help you recover corpse.

This is what I'm looking for.  I know there are some full loot pvp games, but I'm hoping to find a PvE one.  I'm open to any suggestions.

    Ultimate Mode

The pinnacle of power is Ultimate Mode. This mode takes skill and patience.

WARNING: Characters who die in Ultimate Mode will be deleted if not resurrected within 3 minutes. This mode is only for those players looking for the ultimate challenge.

    • More experience is required to level up in Ultimate Mode than Basic Mode
    • Level cap is 80
    • 9 stat points and 5 skill points per level
    • Able to use all items in the game
    • Able to use some skills available only to Ultimate Mode characters
    • If your character dies, you only have 3 minutes to be resurrected or your character is deleted

Hmm, i recall a game that promised perma-death "wizardary online"; Ended up being a maze game with unlimited life, later on shutting down due to lack of players.

Would be nice to see games like "realm of the mad god", but implemented into a more 3D mmorpg than 2D.

Similar to runescape wilderness back in the days, you lose your stuff.  there is infact a game that did offer such things, "mortal-online" game has potential, but the P2S was like P2W.

I actually love this, and would hands down play it - except for the fact that Shaiya is a shit game (imo).

Throw this mode on something a little more modern and I would jump all over it.

Also toss in some exclusive aesthetics and titles (for ye ole bragging rights) and you have everything someone would want from this kind of challenge.

It is also not a PvE game it is a PvP game and the OP specifically asked for a PvE game.

the weak get easily strssed out.

Ahh ok, so if you don't get stressed out at a game you're strong IRL.  Never knew that.

I know it's not considered a "true" MMORPG, but in Path of Exile, a death at high level comes with an XP loss which can set you back a few days of grinding. Trust me, when you're 2 XP bars to the next level (out of 20), your heart will be pumping :)
