[Preview] Grim Dawn: PAX East Preview - Staying True to Classic ARPGs

We just got back from PAX East, and one of the games I took a good look at at was a slick ARPG called Grim Dawn. Currently in production by Crave Entertainment, Grim Dawn is very reminescent of old-school Diablo and Diablo two, with a dark color palette, and some very neat ideas. Now, I must confess to having a soft spot for ARPGs, and any game in the same vein as the venerated Diablo I and II is going to strike very near my heart.

Hmm, no mention of the lovely Titan Quest?

I got this game on Steam a while back now and load it up every now and then.  I haven't played very far into it..not even to the level 10 yet.

Last I logged in I guess they had done a character wipe.  It is exactly what it looks like, another hack n slash!

Probably cause Titan Quest is like 5-10 years old...  And Grim Dawn isnt? :)

Picked this up yesterday, due to the sale Steam was having.  Pretty good game for where it is in development.  Can't wait to play the launch version though, when everything is put in.

I bought it before it went Kickstarter and play it now and then but it just doesn't have its hooks in me like Diablo 3.

Its a solid game, and is basically the spiritual sequel to Titan quest.

Love the graphics, skill trees, classes, and gameplay. Combat feels really solid, with that "ummph" behind your attacks that really makes it feel like you connect (your club) with the enemies head.

My only worry is that the content will be too short or rather too limited. I remember playing Titan quest and being amazed at how many areas there were to play through. So far, Grim dawn has 3 chapters, that all pretty much take place in the same seemless part of the world. Meaning your time spent will be in grasslands, swamps, and dry grass hills. There are abandoned towns, and caves, and basements and such too. However, for the most part, it doesnt feel like the game has much variety when its comes to the areas.

As an old arpg fan, i miss the days of games like Dungeon Siege 1, where you would find yourself in the snow peaks of a great mountain one day, and in the endless sands of a vast desert another.

I backed this game a long time ago with fond memories of Titan Quest in my mind. The game was supposed to have been release ready sometime last year.. They may be half way to that point now.. maybe.

To bad the game is extremely boring.

    The skills are boring.

    The classes are boring.

    The art is boring.

    The particle effects are boring.

The animations are extremely poor still.

It isnt nearly as good as Titan Quest.

Titan Quest is still one of the best ARPG for me, and I agree with you that the variety of landscapes was definitely a big attraction in it, and the real life lore too.

I have purchased Grim Dawn and it's definitely worth it's price, although I agree that it will probably not have a lasting impact for me. I find it similar to "Van Helsing" ARPG - a fun game to play and complete at least once.

    Well these guys made Titanquest.

I have had Grim Dawn ror a long time now and its far better than TC.

I try to avoid buying early access games, but its 50% off at steam for anyone that is interested in it.

My major beef with this game is information is stored client-side, which in turn allows editors and such to "hack" your character to get the best items, etc.

I just can't be bothered with an ARPG that doesn't have dedicated servers like D3, MH and POE.  Titan Quest was fun for its time though.

Yeah, that was the doom of Torchlight 2's multiplayer as well. Unless you knew the people, you were best off not playing online. Too many hacks which, even if you didn't use them, get you labeled as a cheater or even mess up your character.

People cried about D3's online requirement before release but, as can be seen, it's pretty much become standard, and for good reason.

Grim Dawn is a good game in the making, and promises to offer something a bit deeper than the average ARPG in regard to the world and story. Multiplayer insecurity aside, my only complaint so far is that the game's atmosphere is just too dark. The first chapter of the game you spend running through caverns, burned out villages, and murky swamps. It gets downright oppressive at times, and I've found myself unable to play for more than an hour or two at a time.

Bad to mediocre animations and particle effects don't help either, though the world and art style are pretty good. Hopefully that's something in the works to be fixed after the rest of the core systems are in place and functioning well.

AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!

We are born of the blood. Made men by the blood. Undone by the blood. Our eyes are yet to open. FEAR THE OLD BLOOD.

I honestly don't know what people see in Titan Quest. To me it still felt like a poor man's Diablo, and the skills were not something to celebrate either. Grim Dawn seems to have ideas in the right direction, but ultimately it's just another Titan Quest.

My deepest apologies to the folks at CRATE Entertainment, I refer to them as Crave Entertainment in the first sentence, which is quite obviously a typo! Yes! A Typo!

Either that, or I was hungry for White Castle while I was writing this one. In any case, my bad, I will get it corrected ASAP.
