Casual co-op MMO that is rewarding even if your not a hardcore player

I am looking for a good casual Co-op MMO (and when i say Co-op i mean one that has a good system for questing with others) that does not require you to sell your soul to feel accomplished. Back when i was in High school and i had the time and less responsibilities I was down to raid 3 nights a week until 4AM. Now that im a little older my schedule has become so hectic that even on my days off i often find myself doing last minute things that have come up. This has made it become extremely difficult if not impossible to join a guild that has a set raiding schedule.

I guess in the end what i am looking for is a game  that I can go about getting geared up without having to commit to a raid group something that i can solo certain things or do a long quest chain. Dungeons are fine i don't mind spending 15 minutes to an hour in a dungeon. It is just trying to find tome to commit 3-4 hours raiding that is hard.  (Ex: Run a dungeon to collect 20 shards of whatever which only drops off the last boss (Only one drops per run with a 50% drop rate). in exchange for a piece of good or close to raid equivalent gear).

The reason i am asking about the Co-op is because me and my fiance play together and i have played some MMO's where the questing system in a party is not the greatest.

We are currently trying FF XIV, So far i enjoy it and seems like something i can play however i cannot totally enjoy myself with the thought in the back of my head of spending X amount of hours leveling a character just to find out the only way to progress or better your character is through Raiding or PvP (Which is not my thing)

Thanks for any help or advice in advance =]

Wakfu comes to mind. But it's been a bit since I played it. It was primarily PvE with some special grouping combo/bonuses and is definitely a casual style of game.

One has to ask the question... how does wearing better gear advance your character if said gear is only needed for doing stuff you don't have time or want to do?

Enjoy your leveling, assume there is no end game... because in your mind, you can't or won't do it anyways.  So what's the point in leveling you say?  That question only you can answer.  Some would say, because it's fun, otherwise why would I be doing it in the first place?

If you like turn-based games, Wizard 101 is really fun for co-op.

It's a children's game, but don't let that fool you, after you level a bit and start getting spells that buff or debuff other spells the combat is much more complex than simple games like FF XIV offer.

EDIT: It's only good if you have tolerance for a story aimed for children though. If you do, then co-op questing works much better than questing alone /EDIT

I agree GW2 is the game for you and as the post above has stated it's 75% this weekend. Fantastic deal!

I've heard great things about The Secret World's co-op

FFXIV is a good choice indeed.

Some others are SWTOR, Neverwinter and GW2. TSW is okay for co-op IMO, but not optimal because it has so many solo instances that will force you to split up.

WoW is still fine too of course. Of course end-game progress will always be limited in most of them. You'll never have gear on par with those doing the hardest raids. Neverwinter's probably your best choice there, as it doesn't have any real raids. You can get all the best gear just duoing and by doing the group activities that don't take much time. (Though be prepared for a long grind when you want to upgrade your artifacts to their highest ranks.)

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

  • I have found most good MMOs are fun at whatever level of effort you put in, provided you don't measure yourself against anyne else. My wife and I play Marvel Heroes and find it very fun.
