General: RIP Sir Terry Pratchett

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

While not MMO-related, many here will be saddened to hear of the death of one of the world's most prolific and best-beloved authors, Sir Terry Pratchett. Pratchett wrote over seventy books based in and around Discworld. He died earlier today at age 66 in his home surrounded by his family. Pratchett had been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's and had largely retired from public life in recent years.

For those familiar with his work, these quotes will make great sense.

AT LAST, SIR TERRY, WE MUST WALK TOGETHER.

— Terry Pratchett (@terryandrob) March 12, 2015

Terry took Death’s arm and followed him through the doors and on to the black desert under the endless night.

The world is a dimmer place with the death of Sir Terry.

What's your favorite Pratchett book? Let us know in the comments.

Really sad reading this. He was an amazing author with a terrific sense of humor, and he'll be missed.

    Indeed.

The phrases: "That doesn't work" and "Did you get the number of that donkey cart" from the (now ancient) PC game come to mind.

    Favourite book: Night Watch

    R.I.P.

If there is a god, and there is a heaven- Pratchette and Gygax are sitting together at a heavenly gaming table playing through some epic campaigns.

Great A'Tuin shuddered this night and bowed his vast head.

Rip Terry, that's if that shadowy figure in the black robes let's you.

I am sad that he is gone.

But I am so happy he has lived, and chose to share his thoughts, ideas and fantastic sense of humor with us all in writing. My life is so much better, and much more colorful, because he shared his ideas with me, with us.

Favorite book? Good Omens. Have to read it once every year, and has been since release.

Is it strange that i've never read any of his books, and i even grew up in the 90's as well? Either way, R.I.P.

We've lost far too many great entertainers recently. Harold Ramis (whose death REALLY upset me), Robin Williams, Leonard Nimoy, and now Terry Pratchett.

Go with God, sir. You truly were one of His great gifts to the world, and it is now a much less funny place without you.

AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!

We are born of the blood. Made men by the blood. Undone by the blood. Our eyes are yet to open. FEAR THE OLD BLOOD.

I never got into Discworld, but it is sad to hear he has passed. I tried his books but just couldn't get into them!

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

Sad news... coincidentally just yesterday I started reading the first of his Long Earth trilogy that he co-authored with Stephen Baxter.

What sad news! Terry Pratchett was an amazing writer and his discworld novels will never leave my Kindle. He had such a beautiful mind.

The quotes I remember from his books are usually happy ones, so I'll go with " I commend my soul to any god that can find it."

Have been reading his books since the colour of magick first come out., He had a way with words that was out of this world. Was wondering how long he'd be able to carry on his fight against early onset dementia - guess this answers that question.

At least he had a peaceful death, if a premature one.

RIP Terry, Your words will live on

i look this wrecked because i've got GIST.
    Whats your excuse?

I had the great privelege of having dinner with the man during a conference.  He was as nice and as amusing as you think he is.  His early death is a great loss.  His books still give me great enjoyment and his wit I will remember for the rest of my life.
