2 Seconds into the tutorial and Im already lost...please help

admriker444admriker444 Member Posts: 1,526

Sigh this is my second attempt at this mmorpg and once again Im stuck. I tried this game a while back and recently decided to give it another shot as I read the tutorial was much improved.

Anyway, my problem is starting out. The tutorial asks me to activate my ship and open the hanger door. I click on my toon and a box appears with what appears to be two ships. Here's where Im lost.

Im not sure, but I think one isnt actually a ship but the bio chamber where Im in (pod) and the other is the actual ship. Anyway I clicked on the ship I think and now it appears before me in the hanger. I have no clue if this is my ship or a second ship.

I also cant figure out how to open the Bay doors. Ive tried clicking several things and nothing is working. The tutorial doesnt specify how to open th doors.

So basically, I dont know if I loaded my ship correctly and or how to open the bay doors.

And whats the difference between drone bay and cargo hold. Im guessing cargo hold is where i store mined resources but drone bay ?

first off you are correct in thinking the egg shaped thing is your pod, not really suitable for any actual flying and the last thing keeping you alive when a ship gets blown up. second, in the ships panel to activate a ship just right click on the one you want and click "make active". It should appear in the hangar, you are now in that ship.

as for opening the bay doors, you can either double click on your ship or rigt click and "open cargohold" or "open drone bay" (I'm not quite sure what it means by bay doors). It may also mean the items tab which is in the far left set of buttons at the very bottom.

Cargo hold is basically that ships "inventory" (comparing to other mmos). It holds ammo, items, ore, anything, whereas the drone bay just holds drones, which you can ndeploy in space to help you mine or fight.

Make of it what you will.

Thats not working. If I right click I get the option to open drone bay whatever that is. If I double click on my ship it opens my ships cargo.

I still cant get the hanger door to open so my ship can fly out. Ive tried clicking on what appears to be a door and some odd looking circle thingie below my ship. Nothing happens at all. If I double click on any spot besides my ship it still opens my ship's cargo hold. Right clicking anything like the door doesnt do anything. Im out of ideas...

oh, to undock (leave the station) press the yellow and black arrows button at the bottom left of the screen, right above the time.

Anything that you are required to click on in the tutorial will be highlighted and even flashing. Look around for the glowing buttons!

Since you have been saying "hanger doors" I'm curious if you actually mean to open the "ship hanger" which is basically a list of ships that you currently own at that station. It should be an icon on the toolbar to the left that looks like a little ship. It will also be glowing, as previously mentioned.

    GL!

Man this is frustrating. I still cant get out.

    In the tutorial she says...

"the bar on the left i revealed is the Neocom. From that open our ship Hangar. Before leaving the space station you need to activate a space ship and train a skill"

Okay I see under my picture of my toon the Neocon flashing with a ship icon. I click on the icon of the ship and a box appears with the ship in it. I click on it and now the ship appears before me.

I clicked on my picture and start training for a skill so that part is now done.

However I still cant leave the hangar. Nothing else is flashin, I dont see any arrows like someone here says to look for. I click back on tutorial and try everything again. Still nothing is working for me.

There isnt anything else to click on in the neocon besides the ship icon. And all that happens if i click the ship is a box opens with cargo contents (nothing).

If I click Okay on the tutorial box she says the same thing over and over..."the ship hangar needs to be open before continuing"

I dont see anything else to click on. This is ridiculous....

I see a date and what appears to be time next to it in bottom left corner of neocon but i dont see any arrows under it or above it. The time is completely at the bottom of the screen with no room left for anything to appear under it.

if this doesn't show up, go back through the tutorial and make sure you didn't miss a step, or restart the client.

I got past it finally but this game is wayyyy too complicated.

Dont get me wrong, I despise simplified games like WoW and resent the dumbing down of SWG. However this game is insane.

The controls dont feel natural at all. The icons dont make sense (little + and weird symbols to indicate other things).

I got to the part where i was supposed to manuever my ship into orbit and something about tactics for combat bleh.

I like complexity but the game should still have normal controls and a natural feel to it. I shouldnt have trouble right off the bat (again) and need to spend an hr just to learn basic functions.

Sorry EVE, not my cup of tea.

Man do I miss my SWG

It's got a steep learning curve but that's also part of the fun. It actually feels like a space simulation instead of hit 1, 2, 3, repeat until mob dies.

well, I just ask that you keep chugging away until your trail/paid subscription expires. You'll get the hang of it.

If you need further help, convo "Creed Richards" in game, I'll give you whatever advice I can.

    God Bless!

EVE feels and plays like a space simulation. your problem is that you think you already know "how MMORPGs are played". EVE is just very different.

I take a wild guess and say you did NOT pay real attention to the excellent tutorial. just restart it. or restart the client and then restart the tutorial. you cant break anything. even if you lose the ship, you will get a FREE replacement ship.

once you can fly around, you might think, EVE is too easy, because it does so much by itself ^^

but you have to be aware of the fact that EVE has MANY MANY MORE options than WoW is offering. WoW is accessible because there is not much you can do. you cannot be a mage and then turn into a fighter. you CAN do that in EVE by changing between over 150 ships. you can do unlimited PvP, own and control space stations, solar systems or build devices or items.

EVE's economy is a zillion times mre complex than the WoW economy. players can build EVERYTHING in the game, even space stations. you have 5000 solar systems with planets, moons, asteriod fields and stations.

EVE actually is praised for its superb UI and controls.
you just have different needs in a 3d environment, as space is. WoW is a 2d environment. the world is flat. EVE has so much space and is SO HUGE that you need a different "philosophy" in controls. much in EVE is auto-controld.

I started EVE in beta. I didnt even have anything worth being named a tutorial. imagine how shitty I felt. but give it a few hours, and you will see that EVE is as well designed as WoW is. it is JUST VERY DIFFERENT

I had trouble getting out of the gate too... but after a while the game started to feel more natural.

You paid for a full month right? Or are you on the 14 day trial? Either way, you've got some time to play around, so don't give up on the game just yet.

Yeah, don't give up so soon. Take the time to carefully go through the tutorial. Eve is challenging, but it can be one of the more rewarding MMOs imo.

    Agreed.

    EVE isn't your average MMORPG.

In EVE you play one, for your corporation, then yourself. Unlike other MMORPG's where gaining the highest lvl or becoming strongest is the #1 priority. In EVE, your corporation can literally dictate how other players experience the game through different means. For example through the market (economy) or pvping in low sector space.

I still feel overwhelmed and somewhat lost. However I am starting to get a feel for things. I made a few mining runs. Didnt really care for combat against pirates but Im not planning on fighting much if I can avoid it. I like the mining aspects.

Upgrading my ship is rather confusing so Im going to wait until i save up 65k to buy a frigate.

No clue on how to insure it or even see if my starter ship needs repairs.

    Still learning :)

you can ask all of these questions and more in the rookie help, corp, and (in the starter system) local channels. Most everyone there will be glad to help with any questions you have.

    Day 3 ...

Im starting to get the hamg of things. I stopped the tutorial for a while so I could do some mining on my own. I managed to buy 2 frigates and a better mining laser.

I also figured out that I needed to buy skills like electronics and trading. I want astrogeology but thats to pricey for the time being.

Overall, Im very glad I didnt give up on this game. The more I play, the more Im enjoying it.

Best game out right now, but a huge learning curve. I think it could be better, but it kicks the shit out of every other game that is currently released.

Very glad to hear this, welcome to EvE. You just made it past one of the earliest hurdles, and the more you play you will soon find it all becomes incredibly natural. And the more you play the more rewarding it gets.

If you take the time out to finish the tutorial and the subsequent storyline mission you get, you should get an implant you can sell for enough ISK to finance yourself through the earlier stages of your career. Depends what implant you get but you usually get 500k-1mill+ so it is worth doing. Devote a good few hours, maybe a days play, (depends how long you play daily) to do this.

You can also skip the tutorial (not reccomended) and go direct to the storyline mission.

Good luck in your career, and remember rule number #1 - don't fly/equip anything you can't replace should the worst happen, and #2  - always keep your clone up to date.
