Let us be honest... Classic EQ is a game that needs live moderation. It needs human nudging to provide a quality experience for the player. It needs live investment on it by the service provider to be a great service. It is not a fire and forget product.
The news that DBG are severely restricting their customer support for their games, cannot be an encouraging sign. Without robust GMing this server will be a Lord of the Flies hellhole.
I know we are around, what, 6ish months out from seeing the new server, but I do find it amazing that the new management have found a way to make even us grass roots old school fans to feel nervous about giving them money for something we badly want to play.
I think it's probably wiser to find your classic EQ fix elsewhere at this point.

Pantheon is far out. No other game even remotly provides the challange and content of EQ at this point. I am still playing EQ,... tho alone it is not that enjoyable. Maybe i need to get into raiding again.
I see your point, but what can we do? There is no replacement fix. It is EQ or no MMO at all.
MMOs finally replaced social interaction, forced grouping and standing in a line while talking to eachother.
Now we have forced soloing, forced questing and everyone is the hero, without ever having to talk to anyone else. The evolution of multiplayer is here! We won,... right?
If only I could find something that operates like a live server. Increased progression rates, increased stats, it's all either over-powered fluff, 80-90% bot-city; or way to low populations to be of interest.
I can't get to the ones that do not use the current Steam-load; otherwise maybe I could find my fix.
It sounds that maybe you just need a more social/ community based version of EQ for levelling than what is the modern game.

Both games have such a dedicated fanbase that they could be profitable for years.
Its a shame that the these games didn't get sold off to a company that is only interested in developing for these two games. If they both got a little extra care than they were getting from SoE they could even grow some.
But a non-MMO company might not be bothered with the steady but small profit. Its quite sad.

Based on the new forum rules it seems that pretty much all support has been removed.
In some cases this doesn't matter - if a person wants a character name change for example they have been directed to the cash shop to buy a pot (fine) but if a guild leader leaves there is no pot in the store and no automated method for promoting a lower ranked officer.
Obviously these steps are intended to make operating the games less costly; what impact there is on the game population (and revenue) time will tell.
I must be missing something. I've played EQ1 from May 1999 to today with a few 'retirements', but I can only recall twice when I had actual direct involvement with a live customer support person. And one was basically a series of long-winded tirades about the Clump of Dough issue -- it worked on Test, but not on Live servers. After several weeks of futility, when I finally found someone who would try the recipe on a live server, the problem was fixed almost immediately. The second was a lost password with a changed e-mail address after I came back from a hiatus (during the Planes of Power era, I think).
I haven't had much need for any kind of live moderation. It think EQ1 has been a fire-and-forget experience for the vast majority of those who played it.

You're entitled to that opinion, I won't bother arguing subjective experiences. Let's just say that my experience, and the experience of others that I have spoken to throughout my playing time, has led me to a different point of view.
New progression server announced @18:59 in 16th anniversary stream http://www.twitch.tv/daybreakgames/v/3908376, scheduled for summer. Not to mention in general this stream was much more professional and easier to watch than previous streams at SOE, no excessive joking or complete bs. They seem pretty commited honestly, even more so cause in all seriousness if EQ was still at SOE the new progression server wouldn't have come this quickly.
As someone who has never touched Everquest, care to elaborate?
EQ was never really all that challenging. Just tedious. I know, people seem to think the two words are synonyms but they are in fact not.
It has nothing to do with EQ being EQ. It's an mmo, not a single player game. And thus as by nature, MMOs need that subtle guidance in the form of GMs lest the servers be overrun with trollish behavior even more so than usual.
Not to mention it shows a bit of...extra care about a game when GMs throw well thought-out events for a server to get the community together for a bit of fun.
