[Column] Crowfall: Victory is Teamwork

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

It is said we campaign for the pleasure of the Gods. How can this be, we must be like ants that scurry across the world. Do they enjoy the battles for the sake of bloodshed in their names or is the conquest of champions who use their wits more than their brawn?

It sounds interesting, and different.  The genre needs more of that.  This one is on my radar.

Sounds interesting.  I would definitely like to see a game where strategy and teamwork is more valued than simply killing people as quickly as possible.

The only question I would have then, is would this game be able to appeal to enough people to keep it going?  I hope so.

Honestly, with that scale of player specialization required this game is going to be run by few large guilds. System described in the article looks good on paper but I doubt it will work in practice.

Most players will try Crowfall for a few weeks and leave to play more pve or fast-paced pvp focused games depending on their preferences. It remains to be seen if group of players who stick with Crowfall will be big enough to support it.

If the game is good though and can satisfy its target fanbase it won't need those people.  I'm hoping this will function a lot like EVE online in terms of population but we'll see.

map control, timed campaign, and so on... remind  me of  travian  but way more complex and with a rpg element to it.

The fact that there are multiple campaigns going on at a time and they only last for so long tells me this won't happen.  They may be able to dominate a campaign for awhile there is no way they can dominate the whole game for years on end like a lot of huge eve corps can.

I doubt Crowfall will see even 25% of EVE's sub numbers past the 2-3 month mark. It's a niche game that will attract a very specific (but small) audience.

EVE is a great deal more than PVP campaigns. In fact, it's possible to play EVE quite effectively without ever engaging in PVP.

Crowfall is already going to have over 13,000 players in the game with a membership at launch and can keep coming back with more new players on the way. I don't see how this is such a small audience. Maybe premature to say so at just the kickstarter phase, don't you think?

EVE may have a lot more extra than PvP but that is after many years of iteration. How much more Crowfall can expand is still unknown but PvP is the core(for endless content) just like both games.

But, EVE is niche too. Crowfall should also have much more than PvP campaigns, while campaigns (which people typically confuse with prolonged battlegrounds or MOBAs) will be worlds per se, with lots of politics, economy and whatnot. Also have in mind that CF possibly has years of growth ahead, talking about even more alternatives. EVE didnt become what it is overnight.

One should be able to play Crowfall "effectively without ever engaging in PVP" too by, say, being a crafter in good guild, far behind frontlines or leaving for EKs from time to time or even completely out of campaigns. Or one can, depending on how rich and complex the economical and political life in Eternal Kingdoms turns out to be, take a role of Duke or King and manage territories, trade/auction, new members and whatnot.

    Ditto to this ^

I would love to see more games with depth & strategy to them. I do worry about whether enough people will play it to keep it going. Hopefully i'm in the wrong on this one.

I was referring more so to a small niche population that slowly rises, not exactly the sub numbers.

The game has several features that are a negative...for me

    -action / twitch combat

-no persistent battlefield......gains or losses are just wiped away at the end of the campaign(like it never happened)

Sooooo.................. I'm much more interested in CAMELOT UNCHAINED

But is this an MMORPG or some instanced action game ? I mean: is there a persistant world ?

Actually I disagree that gains or losses are just wiped. It's just that you won, there is nothing left to be gained or lost. And no-one can take a win away from you. You start over yes, but in my opinion the gains or losses you had in the previous campaign are not wiped. They happend and they resulted in a win or a loss.

Also the campaigns do last for a long time. It's not that every week you start a new campaign. My guess is that they last just long enough for people to get the feeling "Been there done that" and are ready for a new world and new dynamics.

I think a lot of people will find it surprisingly fun when they realize they are actually working toward a goal, that changes with every new campaign.

Another writer that is a fellow former DAoC playeR! I love it. I have been looking for years for an MMO to fill the hole in my soul that DAoC left. I hope CU or Crowfall is it.
