A game for a support role enthusiast?

I've always loved playing a support role in games, but not necessarily a healer. I don't mind healing, but it gets mind numbingly dull after a while.

I prefer more offensive support, crowd control, debuffs, that sort of thing.

It seems most MMO games I see follow the unholy trinity of "tank, dps, healer, screw support!"

I always loved playing Enchanter in old school EQ, where you may not notice me, but you WILL notice when I'm not there.

I always found playing the backstage bouncer to be a far more rewarding experience than playing with the band on stage, so to speak.

I tried Rift, and found the support feels like a weak dps that happens to buff others in the process. I also fell out of love with SoE a long time ago.

would anyone happen to know a game that actually thinks of crowd control as something more than an afterthought? PVP is optional... very optional.
