As per the title, I'm looking for a game that I can play and enjoy as a casual gamer.
For quite a few years I was a hardcore gamer, devoting most of my freetime to various games ranging from WoW and Eve Online to a few minor games such as Cabal Online. Although in the past year or two I have fell off the MMORPG front due to the many daily duties of an adult. It's been almost a year since I've been able to immerse myself in any game and well, I'm starting to feel the withdraws.
Never been able research thoroughly on my own so today I beseech the members of this forum and I ask, what are everyone's suggestions for a game that I could play casually-hardcore?
EDIT: I've been actively considering GW2 and The Secret World for the past few days, any thoughts on these two? It will be another week or two before I'm able to get my rig and start playing so there is plenty of time for information gathering.

If you're willing to pay the subscription fee ($12.99/month as long as you only need 1 character), FFXIV is probably right up your alley. It's probably one of the better mmo's out right now as long as you're not looking for it to revolutionize the genre. I'm not going to lie, but it's nothing new. You've probably seen most of the elements of the game in other games; however, FFXIV just did them very well.
It caters well to casual gamers, even at end game. Depending on how often you'll have time to play it could take you quite a while (a couple of months) to even get there. Not only that but in June it's about to get it's first expansion, and it looks like it will add a lot to the game.
I second this

Subscription fees aren't too big of a problem. I've found that most games these days tend me be a little better if they have subscription fees backing them up.
As for FFXIV, I did play it a bit around the time it was first released. Was able to get to the end game and was severely deterred by the need to farm the same dungeon multiple times, usually ranging from 10-30 times, in order to build up enough currency for set pieces. Is it still the same in that sense or has it changed around a bit? I don't mind grinding, but that always had seemed a bit excessive to me.
The Secret World is my go to casual game. I play a few hours here and there and never feel like I wasted my time. I don't have the AP wheel filled out by any means so the rate I am going I probably will never be at "cap" but that's ok with me. I find the missions overall enjoyable and able to repeat at least to some degree. If I ever decided to go more hardcore in the game I know there is a healthy elite dungeon and raid crowd on the server.
For PVP it's been awhile for me but GW2 might be a better option there.
It still follows roughly that same pattern; however, it is not nearly as bad as it was during the time you're referring. There's still a grind, but there are about a dozen different ways to get the currency you need, whether they be dungeons, 24-man raids, 8-man raids, and I think even pvp gives the currency if I'm not mistaken.
I think most of today's MMOs give you the option to play casually, with the exception of a few niche titles.
That being said, both TSW and GW2 would make good choices. Which one to choose comes down to your preferences though. Their settings are vastly different (modern fantasy vs high fantasy). If you want a very immersive story experience, go with TSW.
Some other good choices to play casually would be SWTOR, ESO, Neverwinter and of course WoW. All of them allow you to log in and do a mission/quest or two if you have some spare time, while also giving you some end game content to sink your teeth into when you can settle down for a longer play session. Almost all of them are either B2P or F2P with optional subs as well.
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)
