[Preview] Pillars of Eternity: First Impressions

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Later this week, Pillars of Eternity launches after over 77,000 crowdfunding backers demanded it to happen. The spiritual successor to the Infinity Engine RPGs of old (Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment), Obsidian’s game has a lot of hype and hope riding on it. Here are our first thoughts after several hours with the review copy.

The hand-drawn maps are beautiful to behold.

Sounds promising. I would say I've been looking forward to this game since I heard about the Kickstarter, but honestly, its more like since 2002. Can't wait!

Glad to read this. Waiting to unlock it on Steam. The 26th can't come soon enough.

Are there a multitude of hidden items, traps, and switches to discover?  I always carried a thief with me for picking locks, and finding hidden traps.  It could mean the difference between a good dungeon run and reloading.

I don't know, but I'd be shocked if you don't see chests and spots on the floor highlighted in red as you go about your journeys.

Agree with your impressions. Visuals are the first thing that disappointed me when I got into the backer beta. Sure, they're nice enough, create sufficient atmosphere, and evoke memories of the RPGs to which Pillars pays homage.

But, having played a lot of Divinity: Original Sin as well, it's hard to move from D:OS to Pillars and not notice the significant drop in graphical appeal.

It doesn't make Pillars any less great. It's a wonderful CRPG from what I've seen so far and will earn its place among its esteemed forebears. I just wish Obsidian had made it more stunning to look at.

When you stealth the party stealths with you and yes there are traps and hidden things if I remember correctly.

Yes, and they are highlighted in red :) You don't need a thief though, you can spec any character to do this if you want. In my last playthrough my ranger had high stealth and mechanics skills for this purpose.

I watched a stream of this and it looks amazing for baldur's gate fans like myself. Does it have online and DM'ing capabilities?

There is no mutli-player last i heard. If you're into that I would check out Sword Coast Legends which is similar type game but will have DMing

Such a nice title. I only wish my brick pc wouldn't light on fire every time nice graphics showed up on the screen. Oh well, still enjoying it.

Lots of bugs could have used another month of beta testing.

I watched a stream of the start of this game and the combat didn't seem as tactical/hard as I seem to recall from Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale etc. The streamer just clicked on the enemies and waited till the auto-attacks killed them, he even easily defeated a group without using weapons. Does the combat tactics/strategy/depth/difficulty pick up a lot as the game progresses?

I have not watched the stream but I would double check what difficulty level streamer have choosen.

Because difficulty setting  'normal' is usually equivalent of 'easy' in games released in last 10 years.   You would propably want to pick higher diff level.
