It's the better version of WoW, and WoW is very popular. Pretty easy to understand.

    I don't get: why:

    - Justin Bieber was ever a thing.

    - Black licorice still exists.

    - What a Kardashian actually does.

    - How  furby ever had an appeal.

Can the internet people please explain the complexities of subjective taste? So that I, a man who simply dislikes each of the aforementioned people / things may gain some manner of valuable insight. Keep in mind, I don't actually care what you have to say, as my subjective opinion is obviously objectively correct, and the rest of you are wrong / have poor taste.

    2) It is a highly polished game with alot of financial backing and large amounts of content updates. Game releases almost twice the content of WoW yearly.

    3) There is a huge segment of the population that hates the new style action mmo. The tab base Healer/Tank/DPS setup is actually a draw for alot of ppl.

    4) WoW is getting old. Sure FFXIV is a pure WoW clone, but WoW is also an old game. If WoW was a newer game XIV would not be nearly as popular as it is currently.

    5) There is nothing else better out there that has released recently. You would be surprised how many people that are playing XIV will give the reason "Game is painfully average but it is the best we have currently" or "This game is a joke compaired to older mmos but everything else is worse". In my guild alone 50% of the players say the game is crap but it is the best pile of crap we can play atm... everything else is worse.

    6) It is a pay to play mmo. People are sick of pay to win... having to pay $30-$100 a month to stay competitive. >70% of the XIV playerbase wants the p2p model according to Yoshida.

In the end there is a reason the game does not have 20million subs... People like different things. MOST PEOPLE WILL NOT LIKE XIV. Currently there is a huge segment that does like the game. No one should play a mmo because there is large numbers of people playing it. I mean WoW in my eyes is subpar to both old FFXI and old EQ and subpar to XIV currently. But 10s of millions disagree. Does not mean I am playing WoW instead because more ppl are playing it.

Or simply, it's a fun game that people enjoy and have nothing to do with any of your reasons.  You'd be surprise how many people are actually playing for this reason.  FYI MOST PEOPLE WILL NOT LIKE ANY GAMES PERIOD.

OK, you did not get the point...

FFIV:ARR might be big but that is largely due multi-platform release. I doubt the numbers/popularity for actual Windows player base.

It's popular because Yoshida isn't stupid enough to try and reinvent the wheel. Instead he takes the wheel, the frame, the radio, etc from all sorts of differen MMOs, adapts and improves upon them. So, instead of feeling like you bought the old wheel, you feel like you built the latest car.

Added with sincerity, constant updates, people smart enough to realize that the first few levels are for newbs and that it does in fact have a learning curve, that it differentiates main story from quests and realize you can pretty much skips quests and just do main story and level up just fine, that the story and quests actually have enjoyable writing, dungeons that are different even when it's a harder mode, boss fights that actually teach you to rely on others, teach you to play your role, social engineering to make a great community, the best crafting and gathering, and it allows you so many choices of what you want to do even when gated behind levels.

Basically, FFXIV feels like it's the whole package, not a part of it. Granted, I'm sure it didn't feel like that at launch as much as now, but if you are starting now, it sure as hell does.

Also, "doesn't feel like a Final Fantasy story"? Newb, go play FFI - your first quest is saving a princess from the evil Garland, then your journey really begins. Final Fantasy XIV, settles you down into becoming an ace adventurer by having you solve the mysteries of your opening town.

For one, it has the best crafting currently available in MMORPGs (IMO obviously) with an actual end game for crafters.  So it captures that section of the market.  There is actual thought behind making items, its not just click and combine.

It also has more of an old school feel to it.

I got bored of this shit over 10 years ago now, why hasn't this game evolved in any way? Any ways, I haven't even reached level 10 I am that bored, it doesn't even feel like a Final Fantasy game, where is the main story people go on about? It has been non existent so far.

As I remember half year ago or something,  Wow is first, Swtor is 2nd (even if far behind) most successful game for sub numbers. And currently playing ghere.

For the rest nothing to add to yours. Loved FF on console, but here I just do not find anything fun except great music. Still hoping when I will feel like to try, will some day resub back and try to create some alt from scratch.

But for sure what I hate most is that slow going start where player spend most time just wandering around city.

If the game isn't your cup of tea, that's fine, but what's not fine is the false info in the OP.

Yes, there is a Final Fantasy like storyline. Does it start out exciting? No. Does it get better as you progress in the story? Yes, definitely. Did every Final Fantasy game start off exciting? No. Does every well-developed story start off exciting? No.

There is voice acting. Does everyone cutscene have voice acting? No.

Are there boring fetch quests? Yes. Are there boring quests where you have to kill rats and cute creatures? Yes. Does every MMO have quests like these? Yes. Do you kill cute creatures throughout the entire game? No.

You reached level 10, but wonder why people enjoy this game? You hardly experienced anything. I can reach LV10 in less than an hour. I can probably have the same experience in WoW in 1 hour, but you wouldn't be posting this crap on that forum. It's like it's ok for WoW to be this way, but not another MMO.

People only praise this game because there was a backlash to F2P/B2P, and action-combat.  FFXIV stood firm as a subscription model, and tab-target.

These people champion FFXIV due to these reasons.  It's basically a reactionary movement and FFXIV is their last bastion of old school tab-target MMO subscription models.

If it weren't for these reasons, the game would've tanked long ago, and be relegated to the mediocre bin as other past MMO's.

FF14 tanked long time ago, they had to close it down why they rework the game what some told me it is better then first came out, i played it some that cooldown gets me little I know why they did it that way. But the endgame + sub model stop me from playing when I don't feel I am getting my $15 hard to keep going sub, this just me.

And for people out there, no I am not wanted the game to go free to play or b2p it's fine on it's open and good to have option for people, why there are other mmo out there give me options that fit for me.

From my experience most people play it because it has the FF logo on it, not because its a good game. Not that it isnt, but I think thats the main contributing factor. It isnt particularly revolutionary or anything its just a standard mmo and that does its job well.

Oh yeah, that's true. Not so much as the fact the game is popular in Japan where no other MMO is popular though.

I guess more people carry giant baggage than I initially thought. How sad is that?

This game is popular for three reasons:

    1. Music

    2. Graphics

    3. It has final fantasy in the name

With this logic, how do you explain the fact the FFXIV 1.0 version tanked hard regardless of the IP (and music, and graphics to the above poster)? And the fact ARR succeeded when it had the negative perception from FFXIV 1.0 hanging above it. Yes, people like Final Fantasy, but people also hated Final Fantasy XIV.  Yet FFXIV ended up a success.

If anything, the FF fanbase has shown very clearly that the FF logo, excellent graphics and good music will not make them automatically like a game. In this light your experiences are not very grounded in the reality ARR exists in.

FFXIV 1.0 was also subscription model, tab target game. Everyone hated it, only a few could stomach it. If what you said was even remotely true, FFXIV 1.0 should have been a huge success. Yet it wasn't, the success only came with ARR. Therefore the success cannot be caused by those factors alone.

People who say this game is popular simply because of the Final Fantasy brand obviously know nothing about the Final Fantasy fanbase. We aren't like Mario, Sonic, and Zelda fans - all the characters, ideas, and settings is completly different for every game. We might come for the Final Fantasy name, but that alone can't make us stay - in the overall narrative, there are no characters, ideas, or settings to keep us there unless the game itself was good.

What the FF fanbse has is a lot more faith in the company (especially after a public apology), and when they say they are going to overhaul the entire game, we can believe it. Every Final Fantasy has major differences in gameplay aspects, so we know they aren't afraid to change anything for better or worse. Even sequel games that share the same number play differently from each other most of the time.

To put it simply, it takes more than an IP, music, and graphics to keep the Final Fantasy fans playing. If it were that simple, FFXIV 1.0 would never have tanked.

And, let me remind you people, each one is different so we aren't exactly a united fan base either. If I said Link sucks, the entire Zelda fanbase would argue. If I said Cloud sucks, only about half the fanbase would argue while the other would troll or give reasons why I'm right and how a different protagonist is better. So, we don't exactly go in a new Final Fantasy main title with our favorite characters or settng.

FFXIV is set in Hydalin, FFX is set in Spira. Whole other worlds and lore.

One thing I have noticed is just how much effort they have put into the little things in this game.

For example, the character's facial expressions.

Random, little cut scene, walking into the Golden Saucer for the first time - you see your character crack a very subtle little grin.

Or in another quest, before a character opens their mouth to express surprise, you actually see their eyes go wide first.

The characters display so much emotion at all times, even without voice over (there is some voice over, not much and it's often kind of iffy) it's actually pretty incredible.

FFXIV does this better than SWTOR did/does, funny considering the story/characters/interactions were like - the thing SWTOR was going for.

Other little things - like there is an NPC that will tell you the weather in any region of the game. Random, and pretty neat.

And of course you can't forget the tribute to the famous FFXI Subligar. (search at your own risk)

then how come FFXIV 1.0 wasnt a boom?

albeit i love FFXIV music / graphics and im a FF fan , i dont play it just because of that.

Love the idea of 1 char all the classes , the gameplay is fun (could be better ? yeah, wow is still king on that )

what i like the most is the constant updates , 2.0-3.0 has been awesome! we have figthed cool primals (ifrit ,garuda, titan , ramuh, leviathan , shiva and odin!)  , conquered coil of bahamuth and crystal tower :D, some dungeons have been awesome too ^^

the ost is amazing , my favorite song is the ultima weapon theme (both because there are 2 :D)

2.5 part 2 is coming this tuesday with the ending of 2.0 , finishing the main story quest , and hinting 3.0 (expansion).

so if SE keep putting patchs with content im going to keep subbing the day SE goes WoW route of empty patches (6.1 cough) or 1 year of no content is the day i unsub.

cant wait to try Dark knight , use a flying mount :D ( lol @ wow players ) , and explore heavensward ^^
