There isn't another mmorpg that even comes close to that amount of attention given to non combat classes. Not even the sandboxes.
The game is popular because people like it. Simple as that. I enjoy playing it with the group of friends I've made while playing it, and even though not everything in the game is fun, it is rewarding as long as you allow it to be.
These threads always get sour when Hyanmen shows up. He can't express his opinion or disagree with someone else's without resorting to personal attacks.
I wonder when it was that I hurt your feelings, haha.
My feelings don't get hurt by someone posting about MMOs. Your feelings seem to get easily hurt though considering how vitriolic you become when someone dares to speak ill of your beloved game, lol.
Like you telling someone they have no life when they said they were done with GW2 in 3 weeks? No butthurt there eh? Too funny.
What's that have to do with being butthurt? It's just a statement of fact. If you play GW2, or any other themepark MMO for that matter, for three weeks and finish all of the content, you have no life.
Yup, butthurt. lol The only reason you responded that way was because someone said that about GW2, a game that you said was a great game. I can guarantee that you wouldnt respond that way if they said that about FFXIV: ARR.
I own FFXIV for PC and PS4,and would say the exact same thing if someone told me they'd run out of content in three weeks. GW2 is a good game, and so is FFXIV. You can try and discredit what I said any way you want. It doesn't bother me in the slightest.
People only praise this game because there was a backlash to F2P/B2P, and action-combat. FFXIV stood firm as a subscription model, and tab-target.
These people champion FFXIV due to these reasons. It's basically a reactionary movement and FFXIV is their last bastion of old school tab-target MMO subscription models.
If it weren't for these reasons, the game would've tanked long ago, and be relegated to the mediocre bin as other past MMO's.
FFXIV 1.0 was also subscription model, tab target game. Everyone hated it, only a few could stomach it. If what you said was even remotely true, FFXIV 1.0 should have been a huge success. Yet it wasn't, the success only came with ARR. Therefore the success cannot be caused by those factors alone.
FFXIV 1.0 launched in 2010, and around 2007 and onwards, Lotro, AoC, Swtor, EQ2, Aion, Lineage 2, etc., all went F2P, which paved the way for F2P being acceptable in the west. Then TSW and GW2 launched in 2012, and basically paved way for the B2P models.

There's no doubt that there's a huge playerbase that prefer tab-target, and subscription MMO's, and ARR is benefiting from them. The only MMO left for them is ARR if they want a a newer title to play, or they could go back to WoW.

That's a hell of an assumption. I played 30 minutes of the Wildstar open beta and the game completely turned me off. From the art style to the combat system to the overbearing in-your-face messages when you kill things or level up, it just wasn't my cup of tea. I play FFXIV for a multitude of reasons. Does the subscription matter? Yeah, to an extent. I've tried my share of F2P games and they just don't work for me. At least I know I will have full access to the game with a subscription and not have to pay extra for things that should be standard in a game.
People will pay for your game if it's designed well and it meets their tastes, plain and simple. To assume more people would still be playing these other titles if they were subscription based is a bit misguided though. There's a reason they dropped the subscription in the first place: because not enough people were playing it. They had to shift their business model to bring in more money.

Originally posted by monochrome19 From my experience most people play it because it has the FF logo on it, not because its a good game. Not that it isnt, but I think thats the main contributing factor. It isnt particularly revolutionary or anything its just a standard mmo and that does its job well.
With this logic, how do you explain the fact the FFXIV 1.0 version tanked hard regardless of the IP (and music, and graphics to the above poster)? And the fact ARR succeeded when it had the negative perception from FFXIV 1.0 hanging above it. Yes, people like Final Fantasy, but people also hated Final Fantasy XIV. Yet FFXIV ended up a success.
If anything, the FF fanbase has shown very clearly that the FF logo, excellent graphics and good music will not make them automatically like a game. In this light your experiences are not very grounded in the reality ARR exists in.
It tanked hard because it was bad, simple. FF-lovers still played it regardless, but the FF fanbase wasnt enough to sustain it. AAR succeeded because it did away with everything people hated in the previous version and appealed to regular MMO players. People tried it and liked it, or heard good things about it, so it did well. Still, a lot of people I've played with have only one excuse for playing: It's Final Fantasy. Their words, not mine.
If you want to refute me, go ahead. I welcome discussion, but if you don't have anything to contribute besides vacuous one-liners (i've noticed this about most of your posts), then maybe you should refrain from posting. It's just a suggestion.

I wouldn't underestimate people like you though, who prefer subscription MMO's and tab-target, which is fine, but what other choice do you have for a newer title, besides WoW? That demographic is huge right now, because ARR is their only alternative.
I highlighted those words, because they just prove what i've been saying. Those multitude of other reasons can be found in all those other MMO's, more or less, with the same degree. There isn't anything really unique to ARR, that other MMO's don't already have.
Furthermore, it's possible that if Archeage was purely subscription-based without an intrusive cash shop, it would have cornered this market, since it offers more uniqueness than ARR.
observer you place a great deal emphasis in your assumptions on the payment model. Aside from the vociferous posters on this forum what evidence do you have that people base their game decisions on subscription models ? Are you saying that the only reason FFXIV ARR is succeeding is because of a subscription model plus tab targetting and that players who want a subscription model and tab target will pick FFXIV ARR. If that is the case then it should rival WoW in numbers but it does not.
Your assumptions are baseless . The Final Fantasy franchise has its loyal fan base it would have served you better to place the game choice on that fact rather than the flimsy one you chose. F2P or B2P and P2P are discussed fervently on these boards. Gamers in general pick games based on fun and brand recognition hence WoW continues to trump above all but if anything based on the popularity of F2P players would have picked that model easily.
If subscription based games are attracting players the games that have tab target and sub would be doing extremely well. Instead they are not as evidenced by Rift going f2p. Is the subset of tab target players so numerous that they are supporting the success of FFXIV ARR. That is ludicrous even as a joke.
I guess your facetious attempts to diminish FFXIV ARR success on its subscription and tab target model was a good try.
BTW the OP dropped this bomb and disappeared. Was the OP even serious about this thread ?

There is nothing with refuting in your claims because they are ridiculous. Unless you're trying to tell me with a straight face that hundreds of thousands of people are playing this game for the sole reason of p2p tab target. You're the one pulling the magic "they" populace out of a hat. Who are they exactly? Show me this mass of single minded people you are referring to? As far as contributing to this thread, if you read the op, if consider you the one who should rethink posting here. They wanted to know why this game is so popular. You wouldn't ask someone who doesn't play out and doesn't like it. Unless you're just looking for an echo chamber for negative points of view. Which would hardly be a discussion anyway.
''I played 1.0 and thought it was horrible, I decided to play again but this time on PS4, mainly though I'm back playing for an excuse to use the console that I haven't touched since the day I got it lol. I just don't get the hype over this new version of FF14...
The opening is exactly the same, they still haven't got round to doing voice acting for it and it just feels like they've turned it more into WoW. So far I'm doing the exact same quests I remember doing in MMOs 10+ years ago, I think MMOs have finally started to move on, but FF14 has stayed in the past when it comes to the quests. The combat is really slow and boring still, the UI for the PS4 version sucks, I find it hard to navigate it and working out where to go for a quest on the mini map is really difficult.
There is nothing Final Fantasy about it though, I got to level 9 and I'm bored, I don't want to continue. I don't understand what this has to do with FF? There is no story and everything feels so dated, it is literally like going back 10+ years and tbh I think even FF11 was doing more interesting things.
I hate the new world design as well, all they've done is added loads of loading screens. Why? They never existed in 1.0 to this extent, suddenly cities that never had loading screens in them, now they have 4 or 5. The world is so like a coridoor, there are barely any open areas, when you look at the actual playable area on a map, most of it is like straight lines. Most the stuff in the game has an invisible wall there and I just feel so packed in.
I just don't get it and it doesn't help that the world is dead and there is no easy way of talking as they forgot to build in voice chat for the console version. I bet most people were fans of FF11 and are on the legacy servers, I had a FF11 account but the process they made you go through to make an account for that game, I'll never remember any of the details for it lol. I thought TESO was bad, but that game feels light years ahead of this one...
I still have to question what makes FF11 and 14 feel like Final Fantasy to people? I've played them both and neither are anything like those game and they lack story, people keep saying they have amazing stories...... I've not come across any in either game but the short opening thing that has no story to it. ''
Above is what the OP originally posted in another thread. He does not like this game why did he have to post this topic all over again aside from flogging what he thinks people playing this game amount to. He is not serious in his inquiry. I think it is obvious what his goal is. It is to point out his disdain for the people who play this horrible game according to his post. Why are you defending yourselves ?
I was gonna gonna come to here just to post this exact same thing. I hadn't played mmorpgs in like a year and I was surprised to see this game still on the top.... THIS GAME IS SO BAD AND BORING... LOL.

That just plain stupid. FFXIV gained it's popularity with a likeable developer, an open developer, trying multiple things that are popular or liked enough in other MMOs and putting it in a single game, the Final Fantasy brand name to attract attention, a story almost perfectly fit for classic Final Fantasy, strong graphics, way better music than most MMOs, consistent updates with plenty of content for fans to feel they aren't being ripped off, great dungeons designs and bosses, and more thought put into every playable class (fighting, magic, crafting, and gathering) than most MMOs.
I never even played a new MMO, but these are all of the consistent thoughts on it from reviewers, players, and bloggers.
It basically tried to have a little bit of everything without any of it feeling cheap or intrusive on the game.
That's why people play it. It takes just about everything people love about MMOs and puts them together in an orderly and well designed fashion. I have looked around, and I have yet to see an MMO put nearly as much thought into a silly in game wedding as FFXIV has.
Also, unique =/= good. People need to stop thinking different automatically means better.

And, let me guess, you only got to level four and were too stupid to figure out you only need to do the quests with a meteor icon too? Or were you too stupid to figure out the off GCD at a higher level?
Can the internet people please explain the complexities of subjective taste? So that I, a man who simply dislikes each of the aforementioned people / things may gain some manner of valuable insight. Keep in mind, I don't actually care what you have to say, as my subjective opinion is obviously objectively correct, and the rest of you are wrong / have poor taste.
DON´T YOU EVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF LICORICE CANDIES!
I'm trying again because apparently it's the second most popular sub based MMO out there. I just don't get it though, there is no Final Fantasy like story, no voice acting and the world design is super small and enclosed. All I've done so far is kill 10 rats and fetch quests, they're so boring and like going back to 2004 when quests were new and did nothing more than that.
I got bored of this shit over 10 years ago now, why hasn't this game evolved in any way? Any ways, I haven't even reached level 10 I am that bored, it doesn't even feel like a Final Fantasy game, where is the main story people go on about? It has been non existent so far.
I think you're confused or ill informed. FFXIV is not the 2nd most popular sub mmo at all, it has fairly low player numbers. Not to say it's not a decent mmo but it's not one of the bigger titles, it's not that popular really either.
So many haters keep saying that the game is successful only because the FF fanbase is so loyal to the franchise, or because the graphics and music are good. Even when the reality hits them in the face like a thousand bricks: the FF fanbase abandoned FFXIV 1.0, a mainline title in the franchise, which had better graphics and at least comparable music score from a globally renowned Final Fantasy composer.
In other words FFXIV 2.0 has become bullet proof to the assumptions of haters in the ordeal by fire it has had to go through since 2010. FFXIV 1.0 is the irrefutable proof that the IP paired with excellent graphics and soundtrack is not enough to make the game the success it is today. Quite the opposite, the previous iteration completely failed in spite of having all the features haters keep mentioning as the sole attributes making ARR a success.
The haters will never stop saying these things; yet no matter how many times they repeat the same mantra the truth won't change.
In fact FFXIV 2.0's success is a much more momentous feat than any other AAA release's before or after it. Other AAA MMOs are not fighting against a massive negative stigma before they have even launched. This is yet another irrefutable fact. Yet in spite of this negative stigma and the haters hating on the game solely based on the faults of the previous blunder, the game did become the success it is today.
Maybe someday the haters can start dealing with these undeniable facts in a more healthy way than making up narratives in their head that are in complete contradiction with the facts surrounding the game's past.
It is likely that some haters will classify my post as the mere thoughts of a fanboy; even considering that I make no excuses regarding the failure that is FFXIV 1.0. Yet they can't refute any claims I've made, all they can do is throw personal insults at my direction and/or deny the reality for what it is.
Maybe the game will cease being a success tomorrow. The current trends are not supporting that assumption however.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
It is simply an average game in a market full of average games. I find it as one of those sub for a month or 2 type games. Not really great but not terrible either.
The lengths you people go to try and argue FFXIV the second coming is amazing.
The chart shows the placement of FFXI on the subscription profitablity chart, you may not like it but it's there.
I didn't say it was a bad game or that it was a failure I just showed the profitability.
When people say your chart is full of crap, you think they're saying FFXIV is the second coming?
FFXIV may very well not be as profitable as those titles (especially considering SE puts out so much content it is surely going to cut their margins). Your chart is also sketchy at best.
Of course one could ask why the profitability of the game even matters. The answer is it matters only if you want to find negative things to say about the game where no other exists.

Firstly it's not "my chart" and secondly they only argue because FFXIV is not on it apparantely.
Superdata is used by The new york times, forbes, the wall street journal, gamesutra, venturebeat etc. It's a well respected reporting company.
I'll chime in having recently started playing. I tried ARR at release, looking for something to pull my away from my usually WoW, SWTOR, EQ2 rotation. It didn't. Combat was too slow, didn't enjoy the questing. I only got a toon to level 19.
About two weeks ago, I joined a good group of gamers and not wanting to spend money to transfer to their server on wow, or starting a new toon to play with them, they said I should consider trying FFXIV since they have an active branch there from the guild so I did.
At first it felt the same as it did when I tried it before, but I pressed on with the assurance from others that it just gets better. I pushed onto with to level 30 with a Gladiator. Then I found out to become a paladin I had to level a Conjuror to 15 and while it didn't take many hours, I felt like clawing my eyes out playing that class. In fact when I hit lvl12 which I did in about 3 hours, I stopped and didn't play for 3 days. Finally I came back and made myself get to 15 and finished the Paladin quest.
I say all that because once I became a paladin I felt really good. It took some "work" that I didn't enjoy, but the outcome gave me that old sense from EQ1 all those years ago that I accomplished something, that the time was well spent.
I'm having a great time now. Game play really sped up at 30 once I got a reactive skill. Tanking in this game feels more strategic that any other MMO I've tanked in since 2008 (when I found my love for tanking). There is more time to think between skills about what you need to do next instead of being in a hurry to press the next skill to make sure your "rotations" dont' lapse.
I believe that FFXIV is geared towards more the old skool mentality of MMO'ing that the newer MMO's coming out. And while it turned me off initially, I'm really glad I stuck with it to find that out.
Your initial impression was my impression. However, I don't think I can overcome my distaste for linear quest hubing with no risk vs reward. I also thought the tiny walled in zone design was some of the worst I've ever seen in the genre. You almost convinced me to give it another try though.

I mean how legit do you need to be? You can even work it out that with 500k subscribers they would be 6th..
I'm sorry: "the chart you posted". I'm glad we got that sorted out.
All you've proven here is that other game companies are better at taking their customers' money out of their pockets. If FFXIV has the playerbase of TERA yet implements content like WoW, which MMO will make better profits? More importantly, which MMO would a customer prefer playing?
The posters above raised valid concerns regarding the data you posted. You decided to ignore said concerns. What does that tell about Superdata?

I never bought any of the Final fantasy products... that's why it's not popular to me. The other reason I didn't buy it was because the character animations were too "pretty" for my masculinity. I hate the cutesy floating creatures as well. It seems........ "insert word here"
Proud MMORPG.com member since March 2004! Make PvE GREAT Again!
It is such a social game, best community i have ever seen in an mmo. I think that is why it is so popular, many people just login so they can talk to people in their free company. If you are running a dungeon, it tells you if someone has never ran it before. Most of the time everyone helps the new player, and unlike swtor, you do not get yelled at for watching the cutscenes.

ESO, WS, and ARR were all subscription MMO's at launch. ESO finally went B2P. WS crashed and burn.
Out of those 3, ARR is the only tab-target MMO, so players flocked to it, because they didn't like action-combat that WS or ESO offered. They wanted a subscription MMO, and ARR provided that, along with tab-target.
They had no other alternative for a newer AAA title, unless they went back to WoW.
If all these MMO's were still subscription-based, it's highly likely ARR players who prefer tab-target and subscription MMO's, would play these other titles instead.
There's no doubt that there's a huge playerbase that prefer tab-target, and subscription MMO's, and ARR is benefiting from them. The only MMO left for them is ARR if they want a a newer title to play, or they could go back to WoW.
ARR is truly the last "AAA" MMO to be a subscription-based and tab-target MMO (besides a 10 year old WoW), even if it does have a cash shop.
Lol man you are reaching hard.
Thank you.
I think you're confused or ill informed. FFXIV is not the 2nd most popular sub mmo at all, it has fairly low player numbers. Not to say it's not a decent mmo but it's not one of the bigger titles, it's not that popular really either.
Here is the list from January 2015.

I mean how legit do you need to be? You can even work it out that with 500k subscribers they would be 6th..
Your initial impression was my impression. However, I don't think I can overcome my distaste for linear quest hubing with no risk vs reward. I also thought the tiny walled in zone design was some of the worst I've ever seen in the genre. You almost convinced me to give it another try though.
