City Lag

oldbluiesoldbluies Member UncommonPosts: 10

When in the cities, the lag can be unbearable. This is my system specs, any suggestions what needs upgraded first ?

GEForce GTX ti

Intel Core i5 290ghz

8 GB Ram

Windows 7.

Thanks.

    It's a 550

Hard to say... The 550 Ti is not bad but getting too old to run max rezz and a processor running at 2.9 GHz is also not bad but also a bit on the slow side.

My system is an i7 @ 4,2 GHZ with an AMD 7970 running on Win 8.1 with 1920 X 1200 monitor rez and the game is on an SSD. I have no performance issues anywhere running at max settings. But I wouldn't be able to do that with a 1440 monitor or higher rez.

Have you tried tweaking the graphics settings? And what resolution are you using?

It may not be your system.

There have been and still are "performance spikes" - Zenimax's term - in crowded areas. Difficult to know whether this covers all the discussion on the official forums.

If you are only experiencing "lag" in cities - which are probably "crowded areas" - it could well be that you are experiencing the same issue as some others.

I have tweeked the settings, I've gone back to system defaults while in the city's . My resolution is 1920x1080.

I don't mind upgrading something, just want to upgrade the right thing to increase my performance.

It did get worse after the B2P so the increase population prolly has something to do with it.

City lag is present in all MMORPG's because many people on screen needs lot of CPU power.

OP, I guess you have some older CPU, i5 750 maybe? If so, you should upgrade.

Edit: Did you mean FPS drop? If you really refer to lag, it's probably unrelated to your PC, but your Internet connection to Zenimax servers.

My FPS when in city's can go from 40 to 0,  some city's are worse than others, shadowfen being the worse, so far. It's really not consistent ,  sometime's it can run at 20 FBS and to be honest, I would take that if it was consistent.

This suggest that the client is a part of the issue and, as DMKano says, you check latency etc.

Clearly worst case would be to upgrade and see no improvement.

Also worth remembering that - probably in the summer - you will have the option of upgrading to Windows 10 as well (free upgrade for a year). Obviously this won't make a difference today but worth bearing in mind imo.

Thanks for the responses. I was just seeing if there was a glaring need of a upgrade. I will keep a eye open for deals, but won't be in a hurry.

    Thanks again.

While an increase in player numbers would increase the server side lag, of which no amount of upgrading will help his system, i think by now Zenimax would have fixed their megaserver thing so that it no longer suffered from that the same way it did at launch.

The most obvious cause, and the thing to upgrade to me seems to be the gtx 550 ti,  the cpu isn't too bad, i think its a quad core, and running at 2.9ghz it should be good enough, as long as the version of Windows 7 is the 64 bit and not the 32 bit, which 8gb of ram would indicate it is, but these days, mistakes do happen. Given from earlier postings that his framerate would often drop from 40 to 20 etc, i personally think he can achieve more just by getting himself a decent GPU, the 550 is too old now really, even a half decent 760 gtx should breathe life into his PC, so if he can afford that much at least, i'd say go for itimage

Where is this free to play game you speak of? Last I checked ESO came with a box price therefore there are no locusts and leeches.

I have a 580 GTx and I don't run it at that high res mine is 1600 x 1200 with no shadows. Perhaps you should reduce it.

Basically means those who already bought the box, which as it was heavily discounted quite a while ago on Amazon (still is!) so probably means those who came back since it in effect, became F2P.image

    edit.

Just checked, Amazon no longer selling the PC version of the game now. image

Not many people use 4:3 monitors, and even then, not many are prepared to run a game at below 1920, if anything, they want higher graphical fidelity, not less. image

You can't always get what you want as Mick says. If you have those specs perhaps the expectations also have to match.

That's odd you didn't see that yesterday.   You made me go to Amazon's site today and once I got past their April Fool's page which was what their front page looked like circa 1999, I found the old PC version selling at  $59.62 with free shipping.  They also are selling Tamriel Unlimited for the PC too.

Was no lag in cities before free to play

Yes there was, along with huge lag spikes. That was mainstay in cities.

OP, first and foremost track your ping, go to options and enable FPS bar (if you havent already)

The server side lag has gotten much worse since the launch of 1.6. It's clear the server is under serious stress since this time and even more so since the 16th. Hopefully they will allocate some additional hardware resources and load balancing as I expect the population to continue to be high for quite some time to come.

Actually theyll probably wait this issue to "correct itself".

But theres another reasonwhy they should resolve this issue (be it in code or actual servers): while they dont really expect good retention rates, when they release DLCs there will be spikes in population and it would be a shame that those who come to play (those who already play) expereince this (unresolved) issues all over again.

But then, SWTOR never got to resolve their issues, and same performance issues arise every time new DLC is released (like with shadow of revan recently) for instance, i guess they number crunched that its not worth investing so much for limited returns. Just hoping ESO wont go same route.

Indeed there was "lag" before 1.6; and before 1.5; and 1.4 and .... at launch. Must be because the game was launched with a subscription. After all FFXIV ARR folk are always talking about queues and that game has a sub.

Whereas Destiny - megaserver tech, phasing, etc but no sub doesn't have a problem with lag.

So that proves it. Must be due to the fact that the game launched with a sub!

Then again it could be something to do with the server architecture design. And how the game design ties back into the architecture design.
