[Column] Crowfall: Dissecting the Kickstarter Finale AMA

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The founders of ArtCraft had a Reddit AMA session on Wednesday evening to celebrate the final hours of the successfully funded Kickstarter campaign, and they threw themselves out there for the potential playerbase to ask them... well, anything about CrowFall. With the hype of the game at an all-time high after the success of that campaign, it's time to get serious about what exactly J. Todd Coleman and Gordon Walton plan to do with CrowFall.

Last night of KS must have been exhausting to them (and it clearly shows in that final video): from forums and kickstarter chat to 2+ hours of AMA typing -> (couple minutes later) 1st podcast (1 hour) -> (immediately after) 2nd podcast (1 hour) and back to KS chat/forums (I guess it was Gordon, did that man sleep at all during that night?), and these are only the activities we could observe.

I will have mercy and forgive them not answering any of my 4 questions. Maybe they found the "Unity 5 large scale PvP performance?" one somewhat unpleasant? I certainly would ;)

     W...aaagh?

If they can't get large scale PVP working, might as well not bother making the game. They've been working with Unity 5 for a while so I'm assuming there is some magic at work that will make it turn out alright.

They should hire someone to come up with a decent name for the game.

I like the name.  I like crows though so maybe its just me.

The name is actually what got me interested enough to read up on it.  Though I also enjoy crows.

Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing).  German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century.  Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now).  I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things).  In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while.  If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this.  If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own.  Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis.  Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

Well, every game has a hype train. Therefore there is absolutely no differentiating between a game being good or bad based on the press. It's kinda like saying "Ooooo, GTA V hype train!!! Toot! Toot!! Next up! Fail City!!"

Sorry, I just hear the word "hype train" and giggle, like some people believe that there are these games that simply materialize out of thin air.

"Crowfall is primarily a PVP game"

I am very happy for fans of PvP.  I hope this game works out for them.  But based on the description, this game is a nonstarter for me.
