2D Space Sandbox, does it exist?

AdamTMAdamTM Member Posts: 1,376

As per the title, does a 2D space MMO(RPG) with sandbox elements exist.

What i mean with sandbox elements would be for example free trading or piracy, as well as maybe holding/building structures.

It doesn't need to necessarily be all the way PVP like EVE but can.

Control/gameplay wise I would like either something in the direction of a twin-stick shooter (top down) with real time controls, or a turn-based game with direct unit control (so, please, no OGame or other nonsense).

I remember a game like that existing a while back, unfortunately i forgot the name of it.

Of course if there is something in 3D besides EVE and Dark Space that i don't know about I'll take it too (do not suggest Black Prophecy or Taikodom).

Edits for the reading impaired.

Beyond Protocol is the only one I can think of offhand, but I'm not sure if that's back up and running after it changed hands.

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

I was looking for that one on various sites but they all seem to indicate that the game is dead.

EDIT: Apparently its now called "After Protocol", ill check it out but its an RTS, i was more thinking about an RPG or TB RPG/Strategy, something where you control just one ship/entity or a very limited squad (Atlantica Online)

I already have FTL and its neither a sandbox nor an MMO.

    Its a singleplayer roguelike.

FTL is amazing coffebreak game. But its not MMO type time waster.

If you want singleplayer game - this is what you need :

    Space Rangers 2

But You want something like EVE but browser based MMO ?

Well , thats something I been looking for ages. There are few being made. But nothing really good at this moment.

I didn't say browser based, i said 2D, it can have a client for all i care.

I also gave an example, similar to Starfarer, except an MMO, and actually released (and for the love of fuck not an RTS).

This is in effect a 2D browser based version of EvE. PvP, player economy, territory control etc.

Yup, I was wondering why someone was claiming that "starbound" wasn't out yet on the first page, then I checked the post dates. :)

To find an intelligent person in a PUG is not that rare, but to find a PUG made up of "all" intelligent people is one of the rarest phenomenons in the known universe.

I thought I was having a stroke for a second before I looked at the dates on the first page.
