It is spelled "liar" a quick spell check would have taught you that, but then since you are a troll I shouldn't expect good spelling from you. As for not having to grind to get better at a skill, I completely forgot about the "real time" skills system while I was busy shuttling party supplies around in the tutorial. Still need to grind to earn money, and gather minerals to construct items.

"Graphics" would be the correct way to spell it, obviously you haven't progressed very far through school if that is a difficult word for you to spell. And yes the graphics were bad, just because a game has the option to turn on all the bling doesn't mean it runs effectively with all the bells and whistles switched on. This is also true of EQ2, what is the point of being able to take snapshots of a scene if you can't actually play the game with all the graphics turned on? AND don't get me started on Microsoft.
Originally posted by Askatan AND: you are again a viktim of small thinking... you are too adjusted to be guided by MMORPGs like WoW. you dont need to mine, EVER, if you dont want to. grind includes something repetitive. kill monsters over and over again, for example.
"Victim", and you should use the word "being" in your sentence. I am not adjusted to "being" guided anywhere in any game. I expect a goal to be set and that I have _some_ clue what I must do to achieve said goal. That is all; if I am enjoying myself in a game I don't care how long it takes me to accomplish the objective. One can infer from your statement that nothing in EVE is repetitive, EVER. But we all know that factually is impossible.
Originally posted by Askatan of course, you can do that in EVE, you CAN do missions all day, you can mine, but you also can join a PvP centered corporation and do nothing of the latter. yes, you will get rich faster by hunting NPCs or mining, but EVE doesnt FORCE you to do that. many play a pirate and are poor most of the time. well.... pirates are poor. but feared... if you would open your mind, and dont expect the first thing you CAN DO is ALL you CAN DO, you would have had more fun (if you had actually played the game)
and: I find it more important to be able to change to one of over 150 (!!!!) ships every player (if he has the skills) is able to fly! and that are not just "clothes". they vary from super fast shuttles, to stealth bombers, recon ships, fast attack, huge battleships, and even titans (bigger than space stations) + the zillion of ways to outfit them.
I pushed these together to illustrate that the logic of your argument is inherently flawed. You state that I don't have to be rich to enjoy the game, however you then go on to say there are 150 ships that I can choose to fly (including stealth bombers which is amusing since the stealth bomber is not a spacecraft). But to change from one ship to another you need money, you won't earn the money as a pirate (according to you), so therefore it would require that you go on missions and/or mine to get money.
Originally posted by Askatan and "I cant leave my ship - waehhhhh" - about that: it's true. but what is also true is: no one misses it
Classic example of poorly executed flaming...BTW the commonly accepted spelling of baby crying is "Wah" no e in there. And I would hazard a guess that the lack of being able to exit the ship is missed; it's just not missed by anyone playing the game. Those that miss that feature played the demo and realized that they disliked having a poorly rendered portrait as their only representation (aside from the ship) and therefore didn't subscribe to the game.
Originally posted by Askatan if you HAD played EVE, you knew that. AND you knew, how goddamn beautiful that game is
Once again you assert (incorrectly) that because I disliked the game and didn't remember that the skill system is utterly passive (and therefore boring) that I didn't play the demo. Couple that with a poorly used expletive and I am sure you have won everyone over. Any minute now I am sure that we will all feel the impulse to subscribe to EVE because some dumbass with less than a middle school education has decided it is the greatest MMORPG ever. <---That would be sarcasm, I point it out as I want to make sure that your remedial mind completely understands me.
I am sure that a few of the words I used were too advanced for you and your 6th grade education so please refer to www.dictionary.com before responding.
English is not my mother tongue, so I am actually proud you have found so few mistakes....
but I guess it is time to show people that you did in fact NOT play the game, or that you keep lieing for some other reason.
a) the fact that you assume I was a native speaker just shows that you dont know EVE: EVE is very international - only one server. there are whole corporations that speak Russian Japanese or German only. but all of them speak English to some extend...
b) speaking English and German and Korean (at least enough to have an easy conversation), your "assault" on my education seems a little futile, as well as embarrassing. And I am a studying for a masters degree right now. Here on this board, I am not myself. I play a role. I like playing roles. I would not speak like a pirate in RL, but you can say YARRR in your role. it is fun. In this thread, I am the EVE fanboi (intentionally spelling mistake here). I do not talk and I do not argue as I would in real life. And I give a damn about spelling. But again, considering I have only made this few mistakes, I can be pretty proud of myself.
c) you assume, that a 3 year old game like EVE is unable to run on most computers with all its "bling" turned on, is not possible at a decent framerate. actually, EVE was NEVER demanding in fps because it contains little geometry compared to EQ2 or even WoW. so: you are trying to deceive again. I am not sure because of incompetence or because of your attitude.
I was talking about the sentece(s): "And yes the graphics were bad, just because a game has the option to turn on all the bling doesn't mean it runs effectively with all the bells and whistles switched on. This is also true of EQ2..." that you even compare EvE with EQ2 (a great game, btw) shows everyone who knows those games, you have no clue or you are really unable to let one true word slip out of your mouth
d) "I expect a goal to be set and that I have _some_ clue what I must do to achieve said goal. That is all" talk about lack of imagination. One part of the definition of a MMORPG is, that you have no fixed goal, except to live in a virtual world, bound by virtual rules. If your "well educated" mind is unable to realize the possibilities of player controlled space and economy combined with PvP, you should check out some less demanding games like WoW, in which you are a child taken by the hand while being shown the cookie-covered path to boredom. at this point, if you forgive me, I am not assuming any more you are in any way superior to my intellect or education.
e) "But to change from one ship to another you need money," implies the change costs money and it doesnt make clear that you can have more than one ship. both is untrue.
f) "And I would hazard a guess that the lack of being able to exit the ship is missed" - obviously you are not good enough in your text comprehension to understand that I used the word "missing" in the sense of "feeling he absence of". check out the OED
g) "poorly rendered portrait" poorly compared to other MMORPGs or to prerendered movies? there is NO game out there that allows you to have a UNIQUE face. EVE has the most advanced character creation system of all games I know of. If you disagree, name one that makes it possible, and I say it again, to have a UNIQUE face in all those 100000 players subscribed to the game again a sign of incompetence or hostile attitude on your side
h) (you still havent explained to the crowd why you were lieing about getting better at mining requires active work. but... what am I expecting from such a smart person as you surely are. you must assume, I, in my lingual incompetence have forgotten about it... but anyway:
i) "Still need to grind to earn money, and gather minerals to construct items." again a lie. You dont NEED to do anything. you certainly dont need to gather minerals. you can buy them. secondly: every player corporation will help you out if you need money. thirdly: you NEED to earn money, when you WANT to fly a new ship. that says nothing about grind. being a smartass, I'd like to cite the websters: "grind: dreary, monotonous, or difficult labor, study, or routine" grind is not EVE. grind can be EVE if you are unimaginative and hostile to the hundreds of people in the newbie channels that want to help you. in WoW or EQ you HAVE to repeatedly kill monsters to level. THAT is what EVERYONE considers grinding. in EVE you can earn money by cleverly trading on the escrow - buy cheap sell high I already told everyone here many more possibilities...
I assume, you are simple person who can only handle simple games and can only make simple accusations. why should you answer me, if you can attack my presumed education? most of your posting is a personal attack. the rest is again filled with half-truths and bold faced lies.
I know that in real life, I am more than the fanboi I am playing here usually. But I am sure, THAT: "I expect a goal to be set and that I have _some_ clue what I must do to achieve said goal" is all you are. a lieing, unimaginative and hostile dumbass. (and that is OF COURSE sarcasm)

After 2 months of playing the game myself, I realized in the end that I was exactly 10-2=8 months behind somebody that was subscribed for 10 months, 12-2=10 months behind somebody that was subscribed for 12 months,...And no, the real-time skill training does not get rid of grinding, you still have to grind for gold (techincally grind for minerals), so you can buy your ship, then be ganked by somebody that has been playing for X months longer then you, and then lose every mineral you grinded for.You also cannot create alts to catch up to the folks subscribed for X months, you can only train up one character in real-time per account. Be warned X 2.that's a bunch of crap, my friend...I guess you are either not playing EVE, or you are one of the few whi dont understand the game... define "being behind" - EVE has no levels. you are not "30 levels behind" like in WoW where you cant play with someone who is on a differen server or many levels ahead or behind you. in EVE it's like that: do you NEED to be able to fly 50 ships??? really? why? a veteran can do that. if you can only fly 20 or only one race (4 possible) what's the big deal? the batleships/fregattes/cruisers/command ships........(you name it) of one race are as good as any other. as I said, even in a noob fregatte, you can be dangerous. AND: new learning skills shortened the time for new players - first day players didnt have access to many learning skills.... all in all a typical piece of misinformation.... I suggest you stop that before everyone is calling you a lier ^^What a pack of lies from the eve online fanboy. It took me a week of grinding (mining) to get into my Cruiser with more grinding (mining) beams. Skills....Levels....There isnt a difference between the two except there is no way to catch up in real-time training to somebody that has been subscribed X months longer then you have.
There is a new trial running the Catacombs engine and featuring RvR in it. Never tried DAOC though
Originally posted by Nerf09 There is a new trial running the Catacombs engine and featuring RvR in it. Never tried DAOC though http://www.darkageofcamelot.com/downloads
the problem of DAoC is: it is getting old, graphic-wise and it has bad user interface and awkward controls...
RvR sounds good as an idea--but what you do has no permanent influence in the world.
if you want PvP, I found WoW battlegrounds fun (the problem was, I had to wait hours or often days to get in, which was the reason I quit the game) Shadowbane is pure PvP and every city is player built and player ruled. on the downside, Shadowbane is bug ridden and looks awful... EQ2 PvP sounds promising, but as good as it might be, you will never be able to change the world, or even influence it in any way....
that's why I prefer EVE. EVE has player lore, player history and is constantly changed by players. if you do something great or really bad, you might get famous - to ALL players who play the game (only ONE server). you can build space stations and controls space, or destroy them, build coalitions and fight against other player alliances...
EVE doesnt need artificial "factions" like DAoC--its player base creates them by itself.
imagine EVE like a DAoC where you can be useful in PvP earlier, fight harder, longer battles and have the chance to vanquish the enemy once and for all (until the next alliance wants some piece of your territory

EVE only came out a little over a year after DAoC. So if DAoC is getting old then so is EVE.
Originally posted by porgie EVE only came out a little over a year after DAoC. So if DAoC is getting old then so is EVE.
lol... exactly THAt is what makes EVE so unique...
your logic is flawed: think about it: ho would you define "getting old"?
you do it simply by adding years. is that reasonable? counterstrike (final) appeared years after HalfLife. does that make counterstrike old (as its engine is based on an old game?)
"getting old" in games means it looks or feels like it is not up-to-date any more.
EVE has constantly evolved. All its grafics updates and extensions are mandatory but free. the game has changed itself in so many ways, it is a different game now. But it looks and feels totally up-to-date.
no space game looks better. EVE is stunningly beautiful. no game has a more complex economy or offers so much player control over a game world (except shadowbane - but not economy-wise) PvP in EVE is more fair and better handled than in any MMORPG today.
so redefine your narrow view on EVE. DAoC has NOT evolved a little bit. it might have gotten a little prettier, but it is still the same old DAoC. and if you compare DAoC with its competitors, you will notice they look "next-gen" (EQ2, WoW) while DAoC does not. compare EVE with its competitors (if there are any): EVE looks still better than most games.
Well from what i hear your in the same situation as me, in need of a MMORPG to play. I (like you) have played guildwars FFXI WoW and while alot of them have some good qualities none have satisfied me. I suggest waiting till the end of this month and ordering RF online, it looks great all around with housing system and everything you seem to be looking for. Thats my suggestion to you
Currently I'm trying out City of Heroes. I like it. Not as much as SWG though in it's prime.
Criteria-
Player housing Actual players alts Social emotes/clothing/settings/environment PVP...Player assasinations/bounties
I don't want to seem naggin. I appreciate all your recommendations very much. So far it's been EQ2, DAOC, COH/COV, and Eve. RF online isn't out yet and Shadowbane...I haven't looked into yet.
Originally posted by tophor I like Sci-Fi MMORPGs with those included elements. Is Matrix Online any good. I'm a huge matrix fan boy.
Personnally I really didn't like the Matrix and I doesn't know anyone who actually enjoys the game, but the game does have some nice stuff. You will easily realized it is a "Rock/Paper/Scissor" partial system mixed with stats (about half and half, so you do your to hit roll which count for half, and than you compare the rock/paper/scissor...and apply some random, so the rock usually beat the scissor, but not always...and they change the names of course).
Your efficiency in combat is related to your health, if you are at 80% health, you fight less well. There are many nice aspects in Matrix, but I was unable to stick to it and focus on them, neither where my friends, so I would let you discover on your own.
SoR would be the most "hardcore" game out there where ultimately you PvP in order to raid so you can acquired the tradeskills components. Not for me, but better than any "hardcore" claimer out there, it beat SoE, Sigil and EvE easily IMO. The players are very nice, since they actually enjoy this gameplay (folks who doesn't leave within a month and they are not really angry, the game is rather direct and honest, the players doesn't feel cheated about some empty promises).
Horizons impress me a lot, but I doesn't stick to it. Playing a dragon was a fun thing.
If you enjoy your CoH experience, you should consider Auto-Assault later on when it is released. The setting is very different and the differences are numerous, but they share some comon basics and the game was definitely nice. Mad Max setting.
Personnally I really like reading sentences in CoH/CoV like: "It is not like Stateman or Anofalye is going to show up here to stop us!" or "Man, I heard it is Anofalye that is storming our base, that is sooo wrong (alarm sound in the same time)." And so on, the humor and everything with your name, often compared to the world big names is great fun. I would have love a nemesis quest, someone who is your opposite on many stuff but have some stuff related to you and look somewhat similar to your first costume, that would have been great IMO.

O.K., I have not played EVE, so I can't comment on it. I played the DAoC 14 day trial and it was O.K., and I understand that the Epic Edition is full of upgrades. I played SWG starter and, even though I am a big SW fan, I just could'nt get into it. I'm a casual gamer. By that, I mean I play mostly on weekends, maybe 3-4 hours. During the week, maybe 1-2 hours total. I have played WoW extensively, and it is a fun game, but I just tired of it. WoW is a good game that's simple and fun. I also have played CoH and CoV, and it also is fun because it is not to difficult to play. Also, the character creation system is the best on the market by a mile. Recently, I have played the DDO preorder beta and found it refreshing. I like DDO because I don't have to run 10 minutes to a quest. Next up for me is GW. I just like the look of it, and it looks fun. Considering all this, I say you should try CoH, CoV, or both. Believe me, you will spend 30 minutes at least creating a character. I enjoy them all, and they all have something I like, I guess I should try a non MMO like NWN next!

This is also true of EQ2..."
that you even compare EvE with EQ2 (a great game, btw) shows everyone who knows those games, you have no clue or you are really unable to let one true word slip out of your mouth
d) "I expect a goal to be set and that I have _some_ clue what I must do to achieve said goal. That is all"
talk about lack of imagination.
If you disagree, name one that makes it possible, and I say it again, to have a UNIQUE face in all those 100000 players subscribed to the game
again a sign of incompetence or hostile attitude on your side
h) (you still havent explained to the crowd why you were lieing about getting better at mining requires active work. but... what am I expecting from such a smart person as you surely are. you must assume, I, in my lingual incompetence have forgotten about it... but anyway:
i) "Still need to grind to earn money, and gather minerals to construct items." again a lie. You dont NEED to do anything. you certainly dont need to gather minerals. you can buy them. secondly: every player corporation will help you out if you need money. thirdly: you NEED to earn money, when you WANT to fly a new ship. that says nothing about grind. being a smartass, I'd like to cite the websters:
"grind: dreary, monotonous, or difficult labor, study, or routine"
grind is not EVE. grind can be EVE if you are unimaginative and hostile to the hundreds of people in the newbie channels that want to help you.
in WoW or EQ you HAVE to repeatedly kill monsters to level. THAT is what EVERYONE considers grinding.
in EVE you can earn money by cleverly trading on the escrow - buy cheap sell high
I already told everyone here many more possibilities...

EVE is like the definition of sandbox
There is a new trial running the Catacombs engine and featuring RvR in it. Never tried DAOC though

the problem of DAoC is: it is getting old, graphic-wise and it has bad user interface and awkward controls...
RvR sounds good as an idea--but what you do has no permanent influence in the world.
if you want PvP, I found WoW battlegrounds fun (the problem was, I had to wait hours or often days to get in, which was the reason I quit the game)
Shadowbane is pure PvP and every city is player built and player ruled. on the downside, Shadowbane is bug ridden and looks awful...

So if DAoC is getting old then so is EVE.

lol... exactly THAt is what makes EVE so unique...
your logic is flawed: think about it: ho would you define "getting old"?
you do it simply by adding years. is that reasonable? counterstrike (final) appeared years after HalfLife. does that make counterstrike old (as its engine is based on an old game?)
EVE is stunningly beautiful.
no game has a more complex economy or offers so much player control over a game world (except shadowbane - but not economy-wise)
PvP in EVE is more fair and better handled than in any MMORPG today.
so redefine your narrow view on EVE.
---> you logic IS flawed, my friend

Currently I'm trying out City of Heroes. I like it. Not as much as SWG though in it's prime.
Criteria-
Player housing
Actual players alts
Social emotes/clothing/settings/environment
PVP...Player assasinations/bounties
I don't want to seem naggin. I appreciate all your recommendations very much. So far it's been EQ2, DAOC, COH/COV, and Eve. RF online isn't out yet and Shadowbane...I haven't looked into yet.
Know any MMORPG's that fill these criteria?
Ultima Online fits your criteria nicely.
Only problem with UO is that.. it's old and you can guess the rest.
If only there is a new game that steal 90% of UO's game mechanics.. I will so play that game!
I like Sci-Fi MMORPGs with those included elements.
