You have so many kickstarter projects out there, and so many of them have rather seemingly unattainable goals and claims.  But you have so many people with disposable income (mostly young people with few responsibilities I suspect) willing to throw money at any claim they think is "cool" at the moment.  Then you get situations where the person is dishonest and can in fact just walk away with the money paid to them.  The only recourse is to try suing then, I suppose.  I wonder just how effective that is...

I think indie studios are great, and the level of innovation in them is typically so much higher than something in a major studio.  They have much less to lose from their ambitions.  But these Kickstarter projects are so unpredictable, still a rather new system, and very much unproven.  It seems a magnet for scammers, liars, and lazy "developers" who couldn't actually get funding for their project, put a legitimate team together, or possibly even have the skills needed themselves to undertake the project.

I'm still pretty worried about how a project like Star Citizen is going to turn out.  The amount of money they've been raising is astounding, and I'm just not sure they'll be delivering a product that matches expectations and budget.  Different subject matter, but I just mean to say that Kickstarter projects offer a whole host of scariness to them in their unreliability.

It's not realistic to except individuals to sue a company like this but sooner or later Kickstarter is going to have to step in and make a stand against someone or they risk being known more for their failures and scams than for their successes.  I'm not saying this game is or is not a scam as I really don't know but one thing for sure is Kickstarter if they want to be around for the long term as a viable business is going to have to do something about this kind of perception issue.

    @ green

Those logs dont reflect very well on anyone tbh. Interesting behind the scenes peak at whats happening with a kickstart project that was marketed quite well (and would have made far more had jason thought a tiny bit about PR) and looked on the outside like a solid project.

Those logs have some jaw dropping moments.

-Regardless, Jason was team lead. The buck stops there. Those logs show that he hadnt even done basic research about manhours/cost  and was kind of just believing whatever. It  was a total disaster. After watching the confident nature of jason in the markee dragon video and seeing what was happening- IDK,,, But the buck stopped with jason imho.

    But those logs were just...bizarre

People really need a wakeup call and to be ripped off to wise up a bit, so I'm glad if this guy ripped off 100k.

I hope he posts pics of him living it up with all the money.

100K isn't a lot to live on and his rep is going to sink so far that you will have to dig 1000 ft down just to catch a whiff of its mouldering corpse. Good luck finding any work in the industry again or being trusted to handle money as a McD cashier after this, hope it was worth it :P

Hes a reality TV "Star" and Nightclub owner/loan guy/real estate agent and a swinger to boot.

You cannot make this shit up

Did you leave out martial arts expert and candidate for Governor on purpose?

All I can say is that I'm glad I never gave them even one dollar.  And to think I was about to.

The writing has been on the wall for a very long time, even if it was locked and deleted.

I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.

Yes...But remember, Jason Claimed he was rich and was making this by himself, had turned down investors (they were beating on his door) and he owned $50,000 in dedicated servers in a colo facility. he claimed "this is getting built without KS" and the crowdfunding was supposed to gauge "interest" have a dedicated community and speed things up. he also had a super rich friend (like a fatherto him) that woiuld step in to fund it if needed.

Appleton had everything covered. The game was being built without KS.

The backers were foolish )(yes) but Appleton had a good presentation and is a slick marketer. He a smart guy. IHe knew how to play up the community. They bought into the tale he spun. Its not as simple as you are presenting.
