My new 1.6 beginner Sorc guide

IselinIselin Member LegendaryPosts: 18,719

So.. I started a new sorc after the 1.6 patch and this time I used the "new and improved" pets.

I'm finding it ridiculously easy to solo dolmens, world bosses, public dungeons, etc. Sure, some of it is just experience with the game, but the changes in 1.6, when used properly, make sorcs quite powerful, zero downtime solo levelers. (But please note: I do have about 50 Champion points - you may not find it quite as easy as I'm finding it if you're new to the game...test yourself in open world boss fights and/or dolmens with it to determine your own limits.)

My gear consists of 2 pieces of heavy armor (pretty well a requirement these days with the nerf to light armor values) -  the chest and legs and 5 pieces of light armor.

I use the same 2:1 formula I typically use for my stats. Twice as much into magicka over health and 0 into stamina. I also use + magicka food and the Mage mundis stone for magicka - all my armor is also + magicka (love the removal of soft caps!) and my jewelry either + magic damage or magicka regen.

I decided to use a Healing Staff and a 1HD + shield as my two weapons although I hardly ever use any weapon skills (except when I heal dungeons where I use a totally different set-up hat I won't talk about here.)

And I still use Overload for my ultimate although I use it differently now that the single-target light overload attacks got a huge buff.

When starting out you should still slot 2 storm calling skills (Mage's Fury morphed to Endless Fury and Lightning Form morphed to Endless Storm) at first so you can unlock Overload by level 6 or 7. After that, you'll want to favor leveling up Summoning & Storm Calling.

I use the Restoration Staff bar for my single target skills:

  • Crystal Fragments (I open with this for single targets and follow immediately with Endless Fury - otherwise use when it proce for 1/2 cost and +20% damage)
  • Endless Fury
  • Unstable Clanfear (the morph that heals you  for 1/3 to 1/2 your total health if your clanfear dies or you unsummon it)
  • Restoring Twilight (A bit of DPS and magicka regen buff for you and your party)
  • Healing Staff skill of your choice (eventually you'll replace this with Hardened Ward - probably the best damage shield in the game but it takes a while to unlock it)
  • Energy Overload (the magicka-restoring morph. I used to prefer the other morph but I almost never use the AOE strong attack of Overload now, so this is better than the expanded AOE cone morph.)

My 1HD + Shield bar is also my AOE bar (and btw, the passives from this skill line reduce the cost of blocking significantly):

  • Lightning Flood (I like this morph better for the larger radius)
  • Shattering Prison (The morph that does damage when the root ends - you lock the group of mobs down with this to let the Lightning Flood do its full effect)
  • Unstable Clanfear
  • Restoring Twilight
  • Defensive Stance (I prefer this more offensive morph that reflects the spell back and stuns over the one that absorbs the spell and heals you)
  • Either Overload here too or whichever other Ultimate you want, (I tend to use Greater Storm Atronach in dungeons - especially when I'm healing since you can't use any weapon skills when Overload is active. But I tend to use Overload here as well so I don't accidentally use a different ultimate in the middle of fight.)

The Overload bar (yes, Overload is a toggle ultimate and while it's active you have a 3rd unique bar) looks like this:

  • Lightning Flood
  • Shattering Prison
  • Unstable Clanfear
  • Restoring Twilight
  • Boundless Storm (very good + armor and + spell resistance and a speed boost for kiting)

I typically only use Overload in boss fights or when I'm soloing a dolmen. I find it quite easy to solo many group bosses, both in the world and in public dungeons with repeated use of light overload attacks - it hits like a truck now.

So there you have it... it's a very simple build that is also very, very powerful and  versatile for all PVE situations. I'm VR1 now and I just soloed the "group challenge" public dungeon boss fight in Crow's Wood yesterday quite easily.

I should also mention that I use an addon called SWAPS that lets me create multiple hot-bars and save them. I have one, my ability leveling bar, that I use for turning in quests to level other skills that I don't normally use or to level a particular skill line faster by putting several skills from that line on this bar I have active when I turn in a quest. You can have as many special purpose (healing, dungeons, PVP, etc.) bars as you like saved.

    Very nice guide, Iselin!

Have you ever seen Deltia's guides? He has a pretty good Sorc build as well..

Great thanks for this! I just started a sorc (still only level 8-takes me ages to level), but it is a lot of fun to play.

I am trying to unlock the streak/ball lightning skill and the ward skill as fast as possible. So far I am using heavy armor, boundless storm, crystal, endless fury, the basic summons, the two handed weapon bubble skill, and overload (so powerful!), and I just fly through mobs.

Yeah. he does very nice video guides and knows the class well. His guides are more for experienced sorcs in the VR ranks though.

    Thanks for the guide!!!

My elf Electricity Sorcerer does it a little different... but it is a must that I look more sparklie while zapping stuff.

Switching bars and weapons is not my forte, but I am learning to keep myself healed on big pulls and I cause a LOT of noise in dungeons and in groups!

High Elf or Breton work well but I prefer High Elves. They both get 10% extra Magicka. The Breton also gets spell cost reduction and spell resistance while the High Elves get in-combat magicka regen and extra damage.

I will definitely give this a shot. I was working on your earlier sorc build but since 1.6 I hadn't played my sorc as much. Time to try it out. With a currently total of 75 CP, I think I will be alright.

For one I'm 100% light armour which works well for everything but tricky stuff. Light armour really is light now. So I'll mix up 2 pieces of heavy. Does it matter which? Do I use the chest and legging because they have higher armour values per piece? Also do I need to put anything into heavy armour?

I will rearrange my skills later tonight and try and scrape up the gear. I have a chest piece and a mace, but no leggings or shield yet. I'll have to reset my skills too.

The three major armor pieces are head, chest and leggings. They give you the most armor with chest and leggings giving you the most.

The armor passives also got a buff in 1.6 and they're worth getting even if you only wear a couple of pieces... all except for the one that requires five pieces of heavy.
