How many people will buy this game?

knightknifeknightknife Member Posts: 384

How many people do you think will buy accounts for this game? I have not seen any advertisements for the game in any magazines or on tv and barely on the internet (i know that Redbedlam is a small company). I am just afraid that not that many people will get the game due to poor advertising. Even worse, of all the people who get the game, how many will buy sesterces (or whatever they are)? I am guessing that only 1/4 will buy them and most of them will not buy them regularly.

Anyways, if anyone has any details on how they will be advertsing the game, plz tell me, and I hope it does really well.

That is a reasonable question, in that advertising unfortunately plays a large role in our society.  However, I hope that word of mouth and the buzz created on the internet can overcome the limited resources of red bedlam.   They are to be applauded, at leat in my opinion, for trying to do things in a different manner.

I for one, will purchase the download and buy sesterces before and after release.  There are several aspects of the game that Im not completely sold on, but the simple fact that they are making an admirable attempt to recreate a historical atmosphere gives me more than enough desire to see what they can offer.   The Dev team also seems to be highly cognizant of what the players, at least in testing, have to say.

Regardless, it will be fun to see how things turn out.  I for one am optimistic.

RB have always said they want to start small & build up, but I agree they could do with some more advertising and promotion. I hear a lot of positive comments on the various forums I visit & I think this viral type of marketing will work well for them. I'll be pre-ordering on 15th & can't wait to get in.

This game will be like Eve. At first nobody much outside Europe had heard of it. CCP being a small company from Iceland could not afford much advertising, a few adverts in UK and European games magazines only. Nor could they buy shelf space in shops like the big players. However the word spread slowly and steadily in the MMORPG community and Eve continues to grow and gain popularity. RV is also a niche game like Eve and RB will no doubt be happy if the game grows in a similar way to Eve. RV though has a smaller niche than Eve in my opinion.

It has been said that "A Good MMORPG is not based upon advertisment, but upon content"-ME

IF the game holds up to their promises then it will spread, fast. Word of mouth advertisement is the most powerful way to advertise. Once the game is off the ground I am sure they will advertise more, besides I would rather have servers that contiune to expand with the community than lag for 3 months +

Me and a few ex-SWG players from my guild plan on setting up new residence within the city's of ROME. If they pull off a true historical feel I think they will get all the players they can handle, this is a totaly unique concept and a break from the "Dark ELF" and that type of genre. I assume more mature and intelligent players will flock to ROma Victor!!

I am more worried about the other extream. That RV has gotten too much buzz and RB wont be able to handle the crowds.

That's one reason why we have a limited pre-order.  That way we know the ammount of people to expect in March.

yes but also remember the extreme stress for the team as well.  If the game fails in its first month, it may never ever come out of that stump and become anything more than just one of those failed MMORPG's that is free because it sucks... due to word of mouth.  I hate games that are released before they're finished, personally.

I Know I sure tried to kill RYL: Path of the emperor... god that game was horrible.  Luckly, I work at EB Games every now and then so I got to make sure no one bought it... and bought some other MMORPG instead :

I spent some time checking out Roma Victor.. Its a different style of MMO.. It does sound fairly intriguing though..The only thing I don't like to much about the game is there wont be much magic in the game.. Its a MMO based on history, not fantasy..

I love the idea of pvp..Finally a MMO that really gives you freedom to do whatever you wish.. If a player kills someone,he can take all their possessions.. I love it!  Although I'm afraid as soon as Vanguard goes live,I'll be quickly quitting any other MMO to focus my time and money strictly on Vanguard.

Well, I'm going to get this game for sure, and I've told my bud's about it as well.  Its revolutionary in many aspects, what with the money system, skills list, PvP setup, and its genre.  This looks to be the best history genre MMO that will be on the market.  I think that the game will be very successful and Redbedlam will hopefully get enough money to advertise this great game.

Hehe. How many preorders did you turn down in order to limit your preorders? And why would that make a difference in knowing how many people to expect in March since either way you would have an accurate preorder count?

    God you crack me up.

We limit it by....having a limit?  There are only 1500 pre-orders available.  Therefore, we know we will have 1500 + the current amount of testers.  That way we know our servers wont be hit with 50billion people at launch, melt to the floor, and cause a general headache for the janitor.  How many MMOGs have, on their first day, been hit with the amount of people they weren’t expecting and have server problems because of it?  It's better to say, "We'll have x amount of people" instead of, "Well, we'll probably have a bunch of people...but I’m not sure what the ballpark figure would be."  image<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

In all seriousness.  I am willing to give it a shot whether it be pre-order or a little bit after.  For a modest initial investment and further small sums (at your choice, not a monthly plan no less) you get an ever growing historically based game with full PVP and new content on occasion (im assuming).  Whats not to like?  And even if I just buy the game, blow my sesterce's and end up running around poking people with a stick in my snazzy toga...so what.  Its still free after that.

If the game is any good then people hear about it. Advertising isnt really needed in this genre outside of a few banner ads on well traveled sites such as this one.

Pay no attention to Jorev, Kanoth. He slams every game in existence.

I am going to have to agree with just about everything posted here.  It may be only 20 some odd post but all are great responses.  There real doesn't seem to be a need for too much advertising.  MMORPG.com with its forums, contests and what not have created a great buzz for what looks to be an awsome game. I really don't see this game "flopping" in the least.

    Good Luck RB

the mmo market and to an extent the game market has never really relied on advertisements as such.gamers always tend to seek out games other than waiting for a big advertisement.i for one am a long time gamer and never relied on advertisements to buy a game. furthermore to prove my point even without advertising over 20000 people have already signed as members on the official roma victor website and that is quite a healthy number considering the game hasnt even been released....and the numbers are still growing. word of mouth and recomendation is the best advertsiement for selling any product.

very true I would have never heard about this game either....

on topic: I will probably wait a couple months after the initial release and then buy it I am very paranoid about games failing on release I have high hopes for it. Since taking Latin at my school i have been fascinated with Rome and i think this game is gonna rock

The question should be who would not buy this game?

This game seems to have similar features to Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (supposedly the next great thing in MMORPGs) without the financial resources of Microsoft to underwrite it.

Value for Money is unbelievable. A low initial purchase price and no regular monthly fee if you don't want to pay it. I may only play guild wars a couple of days a month but that is better value than paying for a month's sub to whichever game I decide to play that week.
