Elderly Couple looking for......

tokenkortokenkor Member Posts: 4

Hello @ all

We are a couple in the mid 50th and looking for a new Challenge. We played WoW a couple of Times mostly after a new addon. But when it comes to the hard Core Instance we just saw we are to slow for that. Now here comes wintertime and we looking for a new MMO.

It should have Interesting Quest line, good to play as a in game couple, interesting PVP. A bit of Grinding....

I just think  a WoW Clone will do it:)

Thank you in advance

You could try RIFT Planes of Telera.Pretty much the same type of combat with a lot of classes.Should be good for you guys. Also everquest 2.
  • JaedorJaedor Member UncommonPosts: 1,173

I was also going to suggest Rift. It is solo, duo and group friendly, with content you can quickly jump into or leave as you wish. With some experience in WoW, you would find Rift easy to get into.

I could also recommend LOTRO. It has some gated content after about level 25-30 if you don't wish to pay a subscription, but has an excellent story line and is solo/duo/group friendly. Both Rift and LOTRO are free to play.

I would suggest Elder Scrolls Online, it fulfills all your wants.

You can also try Rift, Star Wars the old republic, Tera online.

  • KiyonoriKiyonori Member UncommonPosts: 70

Star wars the old republic - Pretty story heavy, a lot of the abilities were stripped straight from WoW so you'd feel right at home with the combat system, though I didn't like the resource management most classes required. You'll want to eventually pay monthly, unless the game has changed it was very restrictive with it's free portions.

Everquest 2 - At this point in time the game has the most content of any themepark I can think of as far as quests are concerned, though I have to admit I haven't gotten past the 50's. Too much ability bloat for me and compared to the smoothness of WoW's combat it just feel off and too disconnected. You can play a lot of this game for free without paying, pretty big download though.

Rift - A solid choice if you're looking for a WoW-like but it feels generic, none of the characters really stand out. The souls system (basically talent trees) is interesting but it all eventually boils down to a flavor of the month "best build". If you pvp I'd suggest you find a good build online, but for pve, if it's just you and your other playing (aka no end game dungeons) then make your own builds if you can, makes the game a lot more interesting. People can get pissy if you don't follow the best build for the role but it doesn't matter that much before end game. Since they've switched to a free model I see no real benefits to paying that I would personally need If you're looking to grind then it may be in your benefit to play free as I believe you get boosts to exp and other things if you pay.

Guild wars 1 - If you get the trilogy pack you have a lot of content out of the gate. Most of the world outside of towns are instanced, so you both would have your own world to explore together. For the harder content you can bring npcs to help you out and from what I understand they can get you through most of the content. Not really WoW like and I'm not sure how the pvp holds up today but a lot of people loved it to death back in the day.

That's all I can think of right now, hope you find something to get you through winter.

Try something different... Guild Wars 2. Safest bet for old folks is prolly WoW so Rift or Swtor are good alternatives as others have said. Don't try Wildstar. Just don't.

I'm 57 and try and get my wife to play games but it's hard to do. She finally accepted LOTRO and graduated to GW2. She has problems with anything that requires coordination and GW2 pushes her limits. I would go with LOTRO, great story and community.

FF14 or Lotro ... altho imo FF14 is the much better option at this stage of each game..

I think Rift is good for you. It's a lot easier than WoW is and you don't have to really worry so much about "knowing your rotation" like you do in WoW.

I'd avoid LOTRO because that shit is just a money entrapment waiting to happen. Wait to many portions of the game locked behind a paywall. It'd be fine if it was like WoW where you can get the base game and all expansions except the last for 20 dollars but it isn't.

LOTRO charges twice what WoW does for all previous expansions(40 dollars). Their cash shop is full of just shitty hidden ways that are just big fuck you's to the customers. Like if you wanted to subscribe for premium status, you can only do so for 2 months or a year. No 1 month subs.

FFXIV is a very good game, tons of stuff to do. Just the fact you get to level all the different classes from a tank to the many crafting and gathering classes, is a lot to do. Also this is the best community in an mmo I have been apart of.

TESO is a terrible suggestion. It practically discourages couples from grouping at every turn.

FFXIV isn't a bad choice since it's a WoW clone but 100x better looking. I've found visuals to be very important for the ol' ball n chain, which is kind of a shame since the best looking RPG's usually have the worst gameplay.

It's pretty much build for duo'ing. Two players + two companions = a full group.

And I've seen plenty of retired gamers on it. Even had a couple of them in the guild at some point.

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

LOL, Sometimes, if I didn't love her so much I wanted to just grab the mouse from her and fling it! But, you just watch her struggle out of the corner of your eye so she can learn.

Since I havnt seen it mentioned yet:

    The secret world

As far as story and gameplay that lets you use you brain, either by thinking or finding the solutions online (don't..), TSW stands out. Heaps of quests where you figure things out instead of killing 20 things.

However, it was a long time since I played it so I can't really recall the grouping. If you can Group with Another person and finish the quests together, I can't say :( Someone in the know could perhaps shed some light

If it were still around, I would have suggested Vanguard.  That game was practically designed for duo.

One I missed in the recommendations is Aion. It is kinda a WoW clone, but sadly both publishers (NCWest and GameForge) are real bad (Winter starting means Down Under I guess - perhaps a SEA publisher is good with Aion?).

Of the others mentioned (LotRo, RIFT and EQ2) I can recommend all 3, but it depends on how much PvP you want and how much variety in questing. Let me break it down a bit for you...

LotRo has an amazing story, fun events and nice side stories. But after Mines of Moria I think the game degrades very quick into a mindless repetative game. PvP is fin if you like large scale ganking fests in only 1 zone (Ettenmoors). Personally I think LotRo's PvP is something added on the last minute because Turbine thought players wanted it and they made it a rush job.

EverQuest II has ...well... Ever Quests. Everywhere you go there are quests to do and every zone has it's own story. Most quests are a lot of fun to do and you're not handed clues on a platter. O have just picked EQ2 up again and I have to find a couple of things in Zen (one of the continents) and no clue where to search for it - the directions are pretty fague. PvP on the other hand is either arena or on a PvP server a full gank-fest where a newbee has no chance to enjoy the game. If you decide to pick up EQ2, best go to AB server (RP but no one really RPs there and it's the most active one).

RIFT is my least favorite of the 3 MMOs here. Reason is that I feel to be fully railroaded from zone to zone. Unlike the other 2 above, you can't get down the laid out path (EQ2 has 2-4 zones per level range to choose from BTW). The rifts itself are fun to do for a couple of times (and duo/party really helps with them), but personally it's way too repetative to my taste. Only con that RIFT has over the other 2 is that it has a very good character progression system where you can choose from 3 trees to build your character.

Last but not least, all 4 titles I mentioned here are all Free2Play (some more free than the other), so why not download all of them and see what you like most?

I agree here. First they are my age and right off the bat he says they are slow. They won't be out power leveling and PvPing without one another. If they are like me, she will be right by his side while they adventure together.

That being said, I'm not sure I would go with ESO though. It's not due to the group thing, it's just that his wife is probably more capable of combat like WoW has and ESO is totally different as far as controlling goes.

Star Wars The Old Republic, Age of Conan, and Lord of The Rings: Online.

All 3 titles are great stories and the way the stories are presented is different enough from one another you could get some serious longevity. I would also have to say that Hands down these 3 titles are best for "Duo-ing Elderly", Just my 5 Canadian cents.

I too am in my 50's, I would recommend Age of Conan. It's a free download and the story line quest is a blast, there are 12 classes to choose from and all are fun to play.

Something else you could try that is in a different area is Avalon: The Legend Lives. It is a text based RPG MUD. It is free to play and can be played as hard core or as casual as you would like. The two of you could work together in a bunch of different areas choosing professions that compliment each other. Avalon offers PVP, legion warfare, rising in guild or city ranks, commodity collecting and various other aspects.

Aion...  I forgot about that one when thinking about your question...  Yes, Aion would be a good choice.
