[Review] Elder Scrolls Online: One Year Later, Ten Times Better

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

It’s been a year since Elder Scrolls Online first launched. And while it was a rather contentious game, with hype levels through the roof, I reviewed ESO here on the site. In short, I liked a great deal about it, but knew it had some kinks to iron out. Well, in the year since launch the team at Zenimax has been working feverishly like a Khajit slave to improve their flagship MMO.

Gave it another try after it went b2p. Having fun so far. Lots of people and the combat feels a lot better.
  • Viper482Viper482 Member LegendaryPosts: 4,101

Tried it again and same result.....boring overall, feels like a solo game rather than an mmo, terrible inventory management, and the combat just doesn't "feel" right. Not sure how the person who posted above me thinks the combat feels better, they did nothing to it as far as I know.

The updates are for people like the person who reviewed this....fans who liked the game at release. If you liked this game but just got stale in the end game this update is for you. If the game did not grab you before it has not really done anything new that will grab you this time around. It still feels like the same game at release to me. So you can kill npcs. As for theft....it was better when I could just roll through a house and loot whatever I wanted without fear of getting caught lol. When you can play bounty hunter the justice system will be cool, right now it is just a novelty.

    the game is great!

ive actually been having a blast in pvp picking up my shards in between quests, iand i dont really feel the pain of veteran players when in combat as much. only 1vs1 -lol as a group it feels great!

my only pet peeve atm with cyrodill- is when entering i wish they automatically group players so one dosent haveto type 'LFG" or "777" or whatever.  that way there could be a giant pug raid going on in cyrodill.

looking forward to DLC!- thatll be worth sinking my money into! instead of a sub.

    great job Zenimax!

Sorry I just don't see how a game that has a LFG tool that has been broken like 2 months after release can not and should not have a 8.5 rating. Just for not being able to fix LFG tool after a good year is just sad and should give the game more of a 5.0 rating.

Yes, it's a solid game now and I just hope that B2P won't halt updating speed. So far so good.
  • blutm8blutm8 Member UncommonPosts: 86
still too much solo content (solo content in a mmo.. LOL!)
  • VicodinTacoVicodinTaco Member UncommonPosts: 804
Can't wait to try.  I don't play games until they've been out for awhile and get fixed up.  For this I decided to wait for the console release although I ALMOST bought it last week haha.

I think that because in beta it seemed like melee combat did not connect with the target. Now it does feel like I actually strike my opponent in combat. So I would assume they did make changes. I don't care enough to find the patch notes to support it, sorry.

LFG Tool works fine.  Tanked 6 instances with it last weekend.

The game has come on loads since its release but I agree they need to overhaul the group tool, something like WoW's or FFXIV's system would be ideal where you can either join a general queue to jump in and do a dungeon or advertise/join a tailor made party.

The B2P model fits well with an ES game and they have been measured in the cash shop which is great if it stays like this.

    Definitely worth a second look.

I'm going to buy it for the PS4. Will be interesting to see how that work's out.

If it's 10 times better now, I guess it was only 5% of what I want out of an mmo when it launched.

    You stay sassy!

They completely reworked combat timing and over half of all combat animations have been changed.  The difference between 1.5 and 1.6 combat is night and day.

Oh, another of these Bill Murphy reviews that one doesnt have to read to know it's overall dripping with sugar until it concludes to the usual light weighted cons and a free high score.

The game is still far from "value 10" or other slips this "review" contains.  Even fans of the game admit that there are still major issues.

It's just that reviews should be done by someone who is actually able to spot a flaw in a product and not be shy to tell about it - not by someone who simply loves everything about every game (as long as it's coming from a top dog company *cough*) and shows just that in about every other of his "reviews". But then... $$$... we get it.

"SOCIAL - 7: This score is actually lower than the original review, mainly because while the Guild and AvA systems are still fantastic, there are not a lot of people using the LFG tool and most of the game’s leveling content is a solo affair. A group finder for dungeons and other content could go a long way here."

Surely people using chat to recruit players for dungeons rather than using a group finder is more social? I actually prefer the manual method of forming a group for the social reasons. Every game I've played that has a group finder has minimal social interaction, maybe the occasional "Hi" at the start

10x better?  It's the same game it was last year at its core, the champion system is something you'll notice for all of 30 minutes.  Cyrodil PVP is still battles that takes a few seconds if its 1 on 1 or just a giant zerg with long travel times to get to the actual action, travel times that are huge compared to the actual time you'll be in combat.  The game is not solo friendly at all, I actually used to lead a big group from my guild in Cyrodil on a daily basis for the first few months and the difference in "fun" without them is massive.  I actually enjoy playing most MMOs solo but this one will bore you to tears.

Trials were alright when I tried them before unsubbing but to say the game is 10x better is a massive exaggeration, you'd be pressing it saying it's 2x better.  The only big difference between now and then is they've fixed bugs that didn't actually effect everybody, so if you are giving this game high ratings so far the pattern seems to be it's because you were effected by some bug last you played.  The combat is still sub par and more of a tab target than action combat game due to the ridiculous soft lock that allows arrows to fly behind you when attacking someone.  I've said this a few times now but this will probably be my last time chiming in on any ESO post that doesn't have an actual content update.

Last night I got an email inviting me to try the game for free, I guess that's because I was Beta tester at some point. I understand they're desperate to get new players, desperate enough to keep paying sites like this for inflated reviews even one year later.

I made the only right choice I could make. Delete the email instantly and tag any further email coming from them as junk/spam.

My opinion is my own. I respect all other opinions and views equally, but keep in mind that my opinion will always be the best for me. That's why it's my opinion.

It's par for the course in the internet.   Attacking a person who disagrees seems to be a popular method of discourse for many people.

His review is spot on. Not sure what your motivation is besides attention, but I've always thought his reviews were fair.
