SWTOR is the biggest fail cuz they spent so much money on that piece of crap

Wildstar I think they knew what would happen if they catered to the hardcore niche so idk if that's a fail exactly.

    3. GW2 : "The savior of MMO genre" , more like its not MMO at all. A limonade of MMO games. Good but utterly forgetable.

Why would #3 not be an mmo?

    In my experience;

    1) AC2 - As an avid fan of AC I was really looking forward to an upgrade. I didn't even make it a few weeks into Beta. This was my biggest gaming disappointment to date.

    2) Vanguard - Epic fail of a release versus the hype. I started playing again a year after release and enjoyed the game until its demise. Sadly Vanguard never really recovered from its launch and was left DOA. So much potential lost to the ages...

    3) AOC - Tortage is one of my top gaming experiences of all time. The first 20 levels of AOC were so well crafted and immersive for me that I was convinced I had found my new go-to game. Post-Tortage I didn't even last a week. I was lured back about a year later with some slick ads in my inbox but the commercial hype did not meet my expectations.

I think i have to agree with this.. I did manage to test out Dark and light and the game world was massive and for the time looked bloody amazing.. just a shame nothing worked.

    haha the website still works.

Hard to say which is the bigger train wreck in recent times: Wildstar or ArcheAge.

From days of yore: Shadowbane and Vanguard.

I think you hopped on your high horse a bit too quickly there, Jean-Luc.
The thread isn't asking "top 3 games which failed". It's asking "top 3 games that didn't live up to their hype", hence "hype fail mmos". SWTOR definitely failed to live up to its hype, as did Rift, as did Warhammer Online, etc.
And anyway, even going by your point, you're still off-base with  your response, considering many of the MMOs listed never became a massive success and, in fact, several were ultimately taken offline. Some that are still running could hardly be called "a massive success".

    Anyway, my list would be...

    1. FFXIV 1.0. Though it had shaped up into a much better game by the end, with version 1.23, it was an unmitigated disaster, that failed to live up to anything, really. I was so disappointed when I finally got to play it, after being so excited for it.

    2. Warhammer Online. I was really excited about this one, as I'm a fan (not hardcore, but a fan) of the Warhammer universe, and love the humor of it all, etc.

    3. Horizons. The game failed to live up to the hype and expectations before it was even launched, as so much of it was gutted. If the game released per the original design, and other things went better than they did, it could have been awesome.

I think thats because another company picked up the publishnig rights for Dark and Light so its possible we might see a new version at some point. Hell even the old devs seem to be active on there.

Ha! About 2 or 3 years ago I would drop in now and again to see if they were going to continue with it. Today was the first time I had visited since. Would be nice to see it put back into motion.

Ahhh ...you want only 3 hype fails !  THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN

Let me define my definition of the word.....fail = failure to meet my expectations for the game

ELDER SCROLLS ONLINE...... could have been much closer to an Elder Scrolls world. Alliance vs Alliance warfare is a colossal failure. Winning a war by scoring the most points !! ? AvA unstable lag feast after a year   of charging for the gaming experience.

WAR....Faction conflict didn't even have keep sieging  (by design) in early beta(implementation of keep sieging was just awful)....pve was boring...this was supposed to be the next generation of DAOC. Any dev with DAOC experience was lobotomized before beginning work on this game)

Age of CONAN.......a classic bait and switch. 20 levels of one game...then a different game. PVP sieging   was never stable. After the ANARCHY launch debacle this killed my faith in FUNCOM.

GUILD WARS 2....I bought the game for what I thought was going to be world class server vs server fights(they even hyped the fact they had x DAOC devs) WvW turned out to be more like a basketball game ....seeing who could score the most points  to win a war  :-(

VANGUARD......a hyped jumble that promised so much

PLANETSIDE 2....not an mmo...but another hyped game with incredible potential ...twisted in its implementation(SOE  cause owners so much pain they sold it off)

STAR WARS the old republic.......this is what you get when a company that never made an mmog spends millions and millions and millions.Fair pve..awful crafting....failed  pvp implementation....un-necessary implementation of some social issues.

OK...I'll stop there. I think I've given the haters enough food to chew on .

(side note...yes I've stopped playing mmogs for the foreseeable future)

Planetside 2 is an MMO.. just not a MMORPG.. I also quite enjoyed it.

    1.  Warhammer Online

    2.  SWTOR

    3.  ESO/Wildstar (being they came out round the same time and both had equal amount of hype and equal amount of fail)

All 3(4) of these game looked and sounded great before they launched and then they came out and the wool was pulled from our eyes and we saw how shallow and pathetic the world and game mechanic designs were, although each has certain aspects that keep/kept them alive for a time.  But not enough to overcome the extreme disappointment.

GW2 lived up to its hype and is an extremely successful game going on 3 years....not sure what you are talking about. Just because it did not live up to your hype does not meet it did not deliver in general. I don't recall a ton of hype for Rift, people were just laughing at its shots it was taking at wow. It was very successful until some poor decisions and going f2p. Maybe you had hype for it?

pretty much this.  It was supposed to be "WoW 2.0".  The press was saying it, posters here were saying it.

    Real stuff people said:

"It's gonna knock WoW off its high horse".

"If you think WAR is gonna have anything south of 10 million subs, you're smoking some serious WoW crack."

It got here, and reviewers STILL pretty much labeled it WoW 2.0, due to the public events and a few other things WoW didn't have at the time.

Reality set in about 3 months later.

The rights were picked up by Snail Games but since their project lead for it left in early 2013 development for D&L was essentially in suspension.

I just don't understand why Wildstart choose to have funny comic style and hc end game, i like hc endgame but the graphics put me off.
  • sipusipu Member UncommonPosts: 200

Actually WILDSTAR is doing everything to repair the game. The head start was forced by NCSoft and that was a big mistake, the game was not finished yet.

There is a DROP 5 on the horizon, which will bring big changes, especially to PVP which was broken and declined by community (see PVP servers population). This game is growing and deserves a second chance.
