[Column] General: Three Ways to Recapture the MMO Magic

Last week I had a good time explaining my extreme dislike for esports. Granted, I do not dislike those who enjoy esports just like I do not dislike the guy up the street who worships – almost literally – at the church of football. But, the organization and big money that esports really is doesn’t toot my horn. With enough money and push you could make professional nose picking a sport and people would probably dig it, so I just don’t see the value.

WURM. Sigh, if only it were "slightly" faster to do....anything. Otherwise, one of the best fantasy simulations ever made. I just don't have the time to play it anymore.

Ok, I'm willing to give wurm a try but it says that its a 32 bit program and I'm on a 64 bit system. Is there a 64 bit program? Because I can't find it if there is.

A 64-bit system can use 32-bit software. And no, there is no 64-bit version. The game operates on a previous generation in terms of coding.

Yeah, I'm playing it in 32 bit. Thanks for letting me know. Its just a bit odd since most systems are moving to 64 bit.

So far the game is interesting. Graphics are a little primitive and it feels almost like a MUD but not quite. That's not necessarily a bad thing, just different like Minecraft. Kind of nostagic too. Just one thing... I wish I could zoom out from my toon. I don't like playing in first person because I can see more of the world in third person. Usually I have the camera 5-10 feet or so behind the characters head and up slightly.

Moirae, Notch of Minecraft fame came from Wurm Online. :) Rolf works on it now, but you'll see some Notch quotes pop up in game as well.

You have to get lost, by the way, or you fail the assignment! Skip all of those built-up areas. In my opinion, the fun in Wurm gets lost when there is a city being built. I prefer finding my own little deed.

    Good luck!

OP is the Mr. Miyagi of mmorpgs! I like it. Good ideas and a very odd mix of games. Thanks for the read.

That sounds like fun. I had never really looked into Wurm but will try it now and see if I can get lost :)

Whole thing is an oxymoron.  Catering to casuals is what has led the genre down the path it is in.  The move from epic character progression and social gameplay to all you can eat and "conquer the world, 15 minutes at a time" led to this.  So...  Casuals aren't really countered.  They got everything they ever wanted and complained about back in the day.

I really don't think I could get into a MUD.

I tried Planetside 2 and wasn't impressed.  I don't think I could make myself try it again.

What you said about Wurm sounded good but someone else mentioned that it's forced first person view.  I will tolerate that in shooter games but otherwise it's a deal breaker for me unfortunately so I guess that's out too.

I guess I failed the assignment.

I miss the thought of the thoughts I had when I was playing WurmOnline....  A decade ago.
