The players of a game of this nature often come from others MMOs these days, and this will be no different.
Adult players are seeking a better gaming experience, and most that I know went to World of Warcraft for that reason. Most of those also left WoW for the same reasons, they are adults after all and are tired of the monkey business that the children in that game are perpetuating at every turn.
Some servers there don't experience this as much, usually the low population servers. Players who intend to grief their peers also seek the largest populations in order to do so.
I don't think that Age of Conan's greatest selling-point is that it will be highly graphical violence, as well as sensual in nature, as much as it is expected to be adult entertainment...and therefore a general lack of that community that turns so many off in World of Warcraft.
Therefore I would expect a sizeable portion of the WoW adult community to appear instantly the moment Age of Conan is released. I would also therefore expect many comparisons to WoW by the time AoC reaches open beta.

one thing i truly hated about WoW was the community. a large portion of the other players were rude, obnoxious, unhelpful little brats. i've played many mmorpgs in my time and never before WoW did i find such a hateful and obnoxious player base. i never heard of ninja looting before WoW either.
i seriously hope the next mmo i go to has a good community.
imo blizzard welcomes the out of control behavior on their servers and message boards and they do nothing about it. it doesn't have to be that way but they let it, if AOC has a strict code of conduct and actually enforces it the community will be alot better than wow's i think.

Most of WOW fanbase came from Bnet and not other MMORPG's.. Bnet to those that are familar with it was the kiddie land fir Blizzard gamers and was full of L33T dudes and immature brats alike... This game has no gamming following like Blizzard did.. It also centers around a movie that most of the kids nowadays have no link to.. Meaning there are no Cartoons, Games, Commercials, ect that kids could follow about the movie.. As a matter of fact if you show most kids this movie nowadays you would probably get "This is stupid, those monsters look fake" type of statements.
I really believe this game will have more of a adult (or close to it) community since the film is so old and not many kids knowadays even know about it.. Im not saying that it will not have kids but I do not think it will be even close to WOW or Guild Wars in the kiddie department.. I think it will be more like AO's before the free year community.

You see, every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith
you don't sound a whole lot different than those kids. conan is a series of books that have been around loooooong before there was a movie about it.
"wow, this game is gonna be based on the movie!" um, no, its based on the books.
My expectations are on the fence about the community. Part of me thinks the M rating and "adult" angle of the game will keep immature gamers at bay. While the other part thinks that the Blood and Guts aspect will only lure in the immature griefers, whiners and brats because they think the only thing better than anonymously pissing people off, is pissing people off with a nice bloodspray at the end.
I'm all for gettin messy in a fight, but yah, I game to fun, not to be on the recieving end of adolescent frustrations. Here's hoping that skillz will matter more than gear in AoC. For some strange reason, brats seem to have more free time to aquire uber gear than me. . . go figure.
-- I need a nerf --
I played AO, Shadowbane, DAoC and WoW, and i must agree that WoW was my worse 'community' experience. But i think that there willl always be griefers everywhere, its more a question of maturity than age, and i don't think those two sides go together.
Of course you may have some types of games that attract more griefers than others, we might just see what happens with AoC.
*AO was a good community, and for my part DAoC's one was the best i could find.
I hope its Wide Open PvP!!
Dont like the way that l33t dude (kiddie) is talking to you? Kill him...Simple!!
I hate it when people get personnal and you cant do nothing about it even thou they break EULA's and some games..*cough* Blizzard..*cough* WOW doesn't do anything about it.
Kids just taunt you and carry on.
In AoC if someone came up to you, It needs to be as clear as UO (Ultima Online) was in the old days...
Talk $hit and DIE!!

The community of anything is a very important thing, even at work, if you have bad people there you would realy hate going to work, same goes for games, and yes as some others said, WoW community was the worst, but i didn't have any problem with it since i only played with my friends.
as for that matter EVE online has the best community in all MMORPGs, but this game won't be widely playable because of it's intensive and heavy graphics that won't beable to run smoothly on most PCs ( it's just my guess ), graphics aren't that bad either.
but only time will tell :} keep your hopes up.
I wouldn't be surprised either. A lot of the WoW crowd I think, is there because it is one of the best in the dominant "fantasy" MMO. The problem is, it's still not that good. I think a lot of people will give Conan a chance and stick with it (or go back if it fails us ).
Don't be a dolt.
Its PvP, particularly open, that attracts the immature element and gives them licence to rampage around and cause trouble in the first place.
Plus, you'll be outnumbered.
Heavy PvP introduction is doing just this and killling the MMO I've been playing for over a year.

Being outnumbered is speculation.
It all comes down to the actual skill behind the player and how many friends you need to even the odds also.
But we all will be newbs when it is released so....

Would be awesome with open PvP...
It would also fit the mercyless universes conan is!

what a bunch of contradiction in this thread...
it goes back and forth, that the people who ruin the WoW community are immature and adolescent. it then turns around to say the people who will be leaving WoW are the people who are sick of these types of people and will be drawn to AoC.
and all this based on some tools speculation. at least its not gonna be filled with carebear hall monitors like vanguard will be
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
lol was that last part a joke? you say this whole thread is contradictory and based on speculation, and then you finish up with your own contradiction and speculation...too funny

Keep in mind WoW also has a massive community, so of course there are tons of kiddies/griefers.
I don't see anything wrong with comparing this game to wow, wow after all is the most successful current traditional mmorpg as far as I know.
Totally open ended pvp is an extremely bad idea and would ruin AoC. Having experienced it with Lineage 2 and daoc, Ive found that the notions of creating a just world where the evil are punished are totally false. The only thing open ended pvp facilitates is noob griefing and rendering the game unplayable for new players.
The strong power gamers prey on the weaker people who have less game time. It is highly unlikely that a skilled low lvl player could beat a higher level. This is something that Conan is trying to adress which is very positive, but assuming that a higher level player would be less skilled is not realistic. The higher levels are almost always the most skilled, obviously because they have played the game more. There is absolutely no concept of fairness and for most newcomers the game is unplayable, which enevitably leads to a small dwindling elite community of power gamers with their gangs who become bored after a while since there are fewer and fewer people for them to gank/grief. Good fun fights are a rarity and are extremely exclusive.
The 'kiddies' under these conditions do not disappear, but become much worse. Some play for a while and then start griefing lowbies all day, which usually gives them no benefit except for the sick personal satisfaction of artifically raising their poor self-esteem.
If you thought being annoying and ruining a community through talk and messages was bad, give some of them the ability to kill anoyone weaker than them, and the game will die because only the powergames who were there from the start will bother playing, meaning the game will never be successful on a grand scale.
I think having the first 20 lvls being offline will get rid of many kiddies because they will have to have to go through a whole process before they are in game, but it will by no means stop them.
The mature rating will probably attract them more than anything else.
Kiddies are just a reality that everyone needs to deal with, they aern't going to go away. Just do your best to ignore them, and dont sink to their level.
One of the main reasons i'm looking forward to this game is its potential community. Seeing as it's a funcom game it will inherit a large portion of the AO playerbase, one of the friendliest communities i've encountered.
AoC will be like any other game...its going to have its cool people then it will have its $hitbags
"Having enemies is good....it means you have stood up for something"
If they can deliver what they promise, it should carry them until warhammer comes out by mythic. Can't see other competition myself unless DnL get's itself ingear and starts actually delivering.
Pirates of the burning sea, could take some players but I think it will get it's own fanbase and players from eve.. (I consider that game a simulator more than a rpg but still loving the idea of tactical sea combat)
I'm an active wow player, and i'm looking forward for AoC, for what i have seen it will be a very complete game; the all horse battling and strategys seems awsome.
Ah every game will ba a mixed bag. That's life.
I'd say that a fair few wow players would like to take a step away from the fantasy setting though, just for a change of pace.
A really polished si fi game could be the next big thing, but I don't see any coming soon.
The race doesn't always go to the swiftest, nor the battle to the strongest, but that's the way to bet.
Slap an "M" rating on any game and you can bet the kiddies will buy it. Its like an R rated movie, kids will do whatever it takes to see one because its forbidden.
If the developers of this mmo are serious about an M rating then they should enforce an adults only game. Maybe require driver's license to verify age, stuff like that. Although me thinks the kiddies would get around that too.
