Considering getting a gaming rig this summer

redmoretroutredmoretrout Member Posts: 2

So I'm considering getting a PC this summer, but I really don't know where to begin. First things first is a quality gaming PC even doable on a budget of $800 (canadian)?

Any help would be appreciated

    Yes it is doable.

But it would be a budget gaming PC. I think 1000 canadian could get you something close  to the mid range gaming PC scope tho.

It all depends on what your needs are. 800 canadian is around $650ish USD, and while you can build a PC that will game fairly well a 1000 canadian / $820 usd  will get you something that will game very well.

If you are OK with a budget PC and that is what you are looking for then it can be done. If you are wanting more of a Gaming PC then my advice is to save up a little more money and then build.

Alright thanks for the response, telling me its not practical was actually very helpful. I was going to settle for a desktop because I thought I could get away with getting one cheaply, but if I'm going to be shelling out a lot of money regardless I might get a laptop instead. What would be the price difference between a gaming laptop and a PC?

A gaming desktop is going to be cheaper than a gaming laptop. Same rules apply pretty much.

You can get a cheap laptop that will do OK for games, but for a true gaming laptop you will need to spend more money than you would have on a desktop.

It all depends on what you are looking for out of a desktop or a laptop. To get mid range game performance a laptop will run you over 1000 canadian, a desktop for 1000 canadian will blow the laptop out of the water performance wise.

The only reason to get a laptop is if you just must have the portability, i.e. Travel for your job, school, ect.

On 800 canadian  you can actually build something decent for a desktop. 1000 would be better, but a budget is a budget. And a desktop can always be upgraded later.

A lot depends on what you're upgrading from.  If you built a very nice gaming rig three years ago and want to know if it's worth spending $800 CAD to replace it today, don't bother.  If you're still stuck using some ancient dual core and chipset-based integrated graphics, then sure, buy something new today.

$800 CAD will get you a decent enough gaming desktop if you've already got peripherals (keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers, surge protector) that you'll reuse.  If you need to fit periperhals into that budget, it will be tight.
