Once per day? I got it on the second day...

What the hell is wrong with people like you?

Yup, these are the little "features" you have to deal with in a game without a subscription.

The Cash Shop in ESO is still very much in a "cosmetic item only" state, so I don't mind if they broadcast a once-daily message to promote sales. I fear that things will not stay that way though, but I intend to enjoy it while it lasts...

Perhaps a scrolling banner at the bottom of the screen would be better?

I'd like to see just once, someone incorporate this into game play better.... you go to the stable to train your riding skill and the stable master says "We've just received a few trained spotted Senche tigers. Would you be interested in one?" and if you say yes, it takes you to the Senche mount in the crown store interface... too much trouble?

advertising a limited time mount in game? Nothing beats a temporary ad board at every stablemaster.

  • Loke666Loke666 Member EpicPosts: 21,441
It is fine to have commercials for the item shop in the launcher, many games do that but broadcasting it or PMing it in the game is just plain wrong.
  • EladiEladi Member UncommonPosts: 1,145

Complainers for the sake of complaining. they should ignore them as the "ads" are fine as is.  If people really got a issue one can install a mod that hides them / disables them .

I play several hours a day (up to 8 or so) currently and have no issues at all with the ads, Even if they dropped them in every hour.

As for immersion, Its very easy to shout and complain about Immersion while 99% dont give a crap about it, all pvp msg's are broadcast on the exsact same way and happen more often then the ads :P

rofl yeah add some malware and feel like in RL

i dont mind a screen on login with a checkbox to avoid poping until next day (if u change characters or play later on that day) , pretty standard in other games with cash shop.

How about they just write it on the loading screen.

Press , to open in game cash shop where you can buy optional cosmetics.

There is no need to spam customers, Perfect World is known for doing this and I absolutely don't like their games.

On another note "Perhaps someone could just make an add-on to disable in game messages" like this add-on's for ESO are legal.

I honestly don't even understand what the issue is at all -  is it really game breaking?

Also the current ESO shop - well it's pretty poor - there's pretty much nothing worth buying IMO - I'd love to see more stuff worth purchasing

No it's not.  I've played multiples of online games since 2000 and I have yet to see an in-game banner ad stamped across the middle of my screen.  I'm not sure what games you are playing, or have been playing where "this is pretty standard", but please make a short list of them.

The issue, from the forums, can be summed up as such:

    • Subscription members feel they shouldn't have exposure to invasive advertising
    • For a game that has touted all along about their need for immersion, a banner ad in bright yellow that gets flashed in 3 languages is absurdly immersion breaking
    • The Crown Shop is already advertised on your log in, and on the main site, plus it has a "featured" page when you go there.  People feel that is enough
    • The general feeling of cheap, Cash Shop marketing tactics that this conveys

Forum discussions can be read here, and here.

THIS. At first they said it's not worth the sub, they removed subs.

Now, OP whining about ads? Seriously?

I think people are saying just that - it's already being advertised. They made a forum post about the limited time offer and people say in that thread that there is an ad for it on the game launcher. If your thought is that this is the only time they've been marketed it's not the case. This one just happens to intrude during gameplay making it especially annoying.

It's an immersion thing. Why is Adblock so popular? People are just unhappy with ads. I think too that people were hoping that subbing wouldn't change the experience. That's why I noted that doing it to the subs is where I see issue with it. Someone already paid you a monthly fee - if you pressure them to buy more you are doing it wrong because you'll only scare them away. They have to want to spend, it can't be pressured or intrusive to work if you expect to get MORE than the sub fee they already agreed to pay without being forced.

And now some of the sub people are taking that good will back because they don't see themselves as being treated respectfully about the monetary side when it feels like badgering after they already paid at least once. There were a few people who said it made them cancel the sub in resistance to the system. It's about implementation not the model itself for them - they were willing to sub when they knew the cash shop existed. They just didn't want to be reminded about the cash shop while paying the sub so if they can't stop the ads, they choose to stop paying as the only resistance they have.

It's like Hulu, they don't take away their ads completely when people sub so once they get sick of the ads they thought they could bypass by paying, they stop subbing. It's always said that if you aren't paying for something you are the product being sold. If someone pays and still sees the same frequency of ads - it becomes foolish to pay. That's straightforward.

I think it's a cautionary tale really so I sent a link of the post to a person at our company into social media to show them how it can go wrong to bombard someone to the point of disgust.

I'm in that group.  I felt ESO was a game that was worth subbing to, even with the initial stages of the B2P transition.  Having seen how they are marketing their Cash Shop, as well as a concerning trend of potentially economically disruptive inclusions, I've ended my subscription.

I already bought everything I wanted with the points I got when the system switched to B2P. None of the new things are of interest to me for the time being either.

Still, them advertising it once a day is definitely no big deal.

Now if someone were complaining about them going all Neverwinter on their players all of a sudden, and spamming every couple of minutes how player x won mount y from lockbox z, then I'd be inclined to agree more. (Even if it doesn't bother me as much on Neverwinter either. I got desensitized to it over time I guess. xD)

Well, I don't see this as a problem really if it helps to develop the game and keep P2W shite out of cash shop.

While i can agree, think the main problem is those paying the sub are also seeing the ads.

I'm paying (at least while leveling my new main) and honestly this is a small issue imho. It also depens on the ways of advertising ofc.

advertise once per day!?  how will I ever survive.....
  • EntinerintEntinerint Member UncommonPosts: 868

I would like it to not show up for those of us who stay subbed but since it's a chat thing I doubt there'd be a way to filter it for us.

I don't really care about ads in chat tbh, it's the system message popup that bothers me, especially when it comes up during a high intensity PvP or PvE fight.

Like i posted on ZoS forums they should just have it alert as soon as a player logs in! That way they know everyone is getting it and it doesn't bother anyone while playing or fighting in game.

I was thinking the same thing.  Go into the tavern or pass NPC's or when you access someones store they just mention about the new such and such they've been seeing lately.  Of course the easiest thing is put it on the loading screen and an email, anything else is over kill.

This was what got me. Absurdly uninformative UI excused with 'immersion' hand waving, but a big arsed yellow advert in the middle of the screen repeated in three languages isn't immersion breaking?

I don't really care in the end, but between e-mails, the launcher, and log-in screen it's not like they can say people don't know about the... "sale". A big yellow message, repeated in three languages, in the middle of the screen just gives the whole thing a bargain basement, not to mention whiff of desperation, kind of vibe.

Really not what you want to be projecting on a "welcome back" weekend.

I havn't seen it yet...too busy playing GTA V but this whole discussion is about something shown in chat only??

    Really?

If so why are people talking about immersion doesn't chat already removes some immersion?

If it's some banner across your screen I could understand the commotion.

As said havn't seen it yet myself so just wondering.

It shows in chat and in large yellow text in the upper middle part of your screen, repeating after a few seconds in English, French, and, finally, German, if I recall correctly.
