Star Wars: The Old Republic: The Daily Quest - Will SWTOR's 12X XP Bring You Back?

BillMurphyBillMurphy Former Managing EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 4,565

Behind all the major Star Wars excitement last week, one little detail came out of the SWTOR camp: 12X experience gains on class quests is coming back for all subscribers starting May 4th. Will it be enough to get you playing, and more importantly, paying?

It's funny, because while I really enjoy SWTOR's storyline, I dread going through the collect and fetch quests. What's funny about that is that I don't seem to care about doing them in WoW, WildStar, Neverwinter, or countless other theme parks.  Perhaps is the stark contrast between's SWTOR's excellent story-based questing and it's sub-par "filler content" that make this an issue.

In any case, even though I'll be knee deep into reviewing The Witcher 3 for the site, I do plan on subscribing to The Old Republic for a bit, as there are loads of class quests I wanted to finish before the 12X experience boost ended the last time. It's pretty great that they're bringing it back for subscribers, and I'm betting more than a fair few former subscribers will opt in to level up alt characters or finish leveling some older languishing ones.

What about you? That's today's quest... will the 12X XP gains bring you back, and get you to sub, even for a bit?

I'm jumping back in when the 12x goes live. I have a few toons I would like to finish the story on and play around with. I couldn't stomach the same planetary quests again. Need to slam through it though with the witcher 3 launching 2 weeks after. Perfect timing for all of it......Knee surgery on 5/1 and 6 weeks before I can get back to marathon training schedules.

That's so great, I just finished leveling up traditionally with my Empire toon, I did it with Republic one a while back. This allows me to skip all the shared content and do the only different stuff I didn't do yet: class missions from every toon I have (and boy, I can't wait to level the Imperial Agent and Bounty hunter)

This would have the opposite effect on me. /shrug Love the game, and I get on now and again, but I won't do it when there is a XP weekends, boosters, pots, or any of that. I don't like the way it effects my leveling.

Why don't they just fix the dumb space quest design?

They lost me at free to play.

It wouldn't bring me back since I've already played through each class' storyline at least once, but I imagine it'll give them a nice subscription boost.

Last time people loved the 12X Class story xp, and many who missed out said that if the promotion came back they'd sub again in a heartbeat.

I'll be heading back to finish my storyline and to get past Tatooine as quickly as Sithly possible. :D

Doesn't having an XP boost sort of devalue the best aspect of the game?

Not in the least. It allows players to pursue the story, not the garbage "kill 10 rats" quests. Story is SWTOR's best feature. I'm looking forward to it but haven't played in months after getting bogged down in the leveling morass of pointless other-than-to-level quests.

For me, yes. That's why I make it a point to specifically skip playing when they offer experience boosts. I don't need that because the game is already poorly paced as it is and you'll be over-leveled anyway if you do everything planets have to offer. I guess it's a good deal if you just want to experience the story, though. And you're playing as Imperial Agent.

They won't me bring back until they fix or replace this TERRIBLE game engine (BW's modified HERO). The game is totally unplayable in the current state for me. FPS drops from constant 100 to 30 in WZs and 16men raids... awful experience... (my gaming rig: i7 - @4.8Ghz, gtx980 classified 2.0, samsung pro 850 ssd).

Depends on the kind of player you are. I've seen many people that normally wouldn't have the patience to level the alts anyway, so it gives them something to do that they normally wouldn't.

It doesn't really effect the end game crowd either, since they tend to rush through the game and only level 1 or 2 characters anyway. And they might be more tempted to play alts on their off-raid days if they can just focus on the story.

It might irk completionists though, at least those who want to play the content at the right level. But the latter's already impossible anyway. Even without DXP (or X12) you quickly wind up several levels above each planet's content range if you do every single mission and Flashpoint along the way.

The latter they could easily fix by giving people a freeze XP option... but... then they'd have to come up with a way to prevent people from abusing it to roll twinks and ruin new players' PvP experiences thoroughly by repeatedly steamrolling them with pre-mades in certain level ranges.

It's not an easy job to be a dev IMO!

what is this? I don't even? leveling is already way too fast and easy in this game ..

besides, i left because endgame content was boring and too limited, this only seems to have gotten worse from everything ive read, so no.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)

I was a hard core fan and I accepted a few things that anoyed me to play in the Star Wars universe. This last so called expansion made me so angry I sad enough. They sold a paid expansion with level cap increse mind you that had 8 hours of playable content then its dailies all day long. I said ok i'm done.

I already have all the class stories finished and a million characters at 55 from the first 12x XP before the xpac, then I quit the game. I don't know if I can stomach getting them all to 60 but I may go back when I am sick of the game I am playing currently

The way maxing affection improves your stats and companion performance, skipping all that optional content hurts too. With normal level, independent of class I always max at least 1 companion, while the rest is around 80% done. Easy to farm from there with old dailies or Makeb.

I was at the last one, but gonna skip this one.

Gathering skills and the GTN can help you make up for not having a high level to cover the expenses. And a skill like Diplomacy, Underworld trading or Treasure hunting can take care of the companion affection.

Of course that still requires more knowledge of the game than an actual new player would have.

Since I am back now, I certainly playing 12x. Though not on characters I want to savor. Playthrough a few for story, I guess.

An alternate leveling path would also do it.

Like a complete storyline that scales with your level and takes place on several planets. Or several of them.

You could either do them alongside the class stories, just like the planetary stories, or do them afterwards. (Since it's important to have content that targets a wide audience)

They could even make it so that these storylines don't unlock until you already have one character at max level to keep confusion among new players to a minimum.

Started a new sub yesterday because I have a Sith Inquisitor I wanna play through on the expansions. Already have a marauder at lvl 60 but stopped paying after Revan was over and was waiting for new class story.

I tried getting back to ESO but Swtor has a thing all other MMo RPGS(Role-playingt!) are missing:

A side where you actually play as an villain and gets rewarded for playing on the evil side.

Man if only ESO had this but too no, the same old hero quest line that doesnt change no matter class. It is so overdone it aint fun no more....think about it, it would be if you could only play for the light side in SWTOR.

So yea, SWTOR is still my fav MMO. Dont really care for these 12X XP, I actually didnt buy Revan first for this. I dont wanna rush my games, Im paying to get entertained and I will take my time slow.

They should have this active after you finish the quest line with both Republic and Sith.  I have not played in ~1 year and have had a 60 day card sitting on my desk for 6-8 months.  I might give it a go.

“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

Their cash-shop and designs to pay for the game put me off too much. I've never had to pay extra besides my subscription, to actually be able to get the stuff I wanted in an MMORPG.
