DAoC is a very deep and complex game, so this is a very basic guide only. Perhaps someone else here has the time to write a more detailed answer. Check the Camelot Herald and fan sites as well as the FAQ sticky at the top of this forum.
To start you chose a base class. At level five you can choose your final class based on your base class. Every level gained you are allocated points to spend against specialisations. The number of points you gain each level delpends of the class you select. Some classes have more areas of specialisation to train than others. You can therefore tweak your class according to your play style and what you want to do at level fifty. It is a very flexible system although some classes can be badly 'gimped' by allocating points in the wrong way resulting in a far less than optimum character at level fifty, so it's wise to read up and plan ahead. Respecs are available though, free at levels five, twenty and forty in a single spec line. Other respecs can be purchased or made by the use of certain items.
The game has a PvP end game, called RvR (Realm v. Realm). There are three realms competing against each other; Albion, Hibernia and Midgard. The basic idea is to capture enemy towers, keeps and relics in order to gain advantages in-game for your realm. You also earn RPs (realm points) for actions against enemy realms and these can be spent to buy additional powers, RAs (realm abilities) for your character. With the 'Darkness Rising' expansion there are also champion levels which again add powers to your character. There are also many battlegrounds available as you level you can enter and these introduce you to RvR strategies should you desire PvP play.
Although the end game in DAoC is usually seen as the RvR struggle you do not have to RvR (PvP) at all. DAoC doesn't force you down one alley. There is a vast amount of PvE content, raid encounters etc. Some players never RvR. It's up to you. There are also many ways to level, it's not just a mob grind.
Again with teams it's up to you. Most folks do team up, at some point at least. However you can solo *most* classes easily enough should you wish. Some classes, such as the rogue type stealth classes, excel at solo RvR whereas other classes are wise not to venture into the frontiers without friends. Taking enemy towers, keeps and relics though cannot be acheived solo and require large groups working together. In PvE too not all goals, or quests, can be acheived solo, but a substantial amount can.
In short DAoC is what you want it to be. PvP, or no PvP. Team based or solo. There are a multitude of possibilities, more so than in any other MMORPG IMO. Three realms, many races and lots of character classes to play all make for a game you can tailor to your individual play style. DAoC is not an 'on the rails' type game, it's a wide open world large enough and with more than sufficient content to allow you to have fun whatever you decide to do.
I hope this helps and makes sense. I need to sleep badly after a long night adventuring.
