As any fan knows, part of loving video games is also being disappointed in them every now and then. This week on Tales from the Neighborhood we’re looking at four disappointed blog posts about Neverwinter, World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy Record Keeper, and MMO communities in general, along with a couple of very positive posts about RIFT’s new wardrobe system.

I don't mind FFRK because it's something I can play in small spurts. I can dump about 10 minutes into it and come back in 2 hours and do it again. It can't be treated as a primary game though because of the stamina mechanics, unless you want to spend money. It's nothing ground breaking by any means. Basically it's a grind game where you level up characters, power up equipment and create/upgrade abilities, and collect new characters and go through new stories as they make them available.
If you want to play a mobile game that goes back to Square Enix's roots then try Final Fantasy Dimensions. I personally haven't played it but I hear it's a good standalone game, not one of your typical mobile games where you can only do so many actions in so much time.
i enjoy FFRK , but im a FF fan, and its a mobile game.
About boxes and what not i despise the idea , its like the "enchant" system lots of asia games like to implement , enchant to +10 only to try for +11 fail and go back to 9 or even break the weapon lol , retarded system , same as RNG boxes ,i dont know why is even legal to do that...because some drops are 0.00001% im sure...
I have to jump in here and give my +1 to the wardrobe system implemented by Rift. Much props goes to Rift for this and here's hoping it becomes a staple in all MMOs.
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.
MMO Social.. huh?.... oh yeah.. i forgot about the MMO Communities being social.. 14 years ago... 10 years ago... 8 years ago... 6 years ago... 5 ye..... wait... nvm that never happened..... about 5 years ago I noticed a change in the MMO community... it wasnt something that took its time growing.. it was a slam bam thank you mam moment....
Meaning a certain company (Blizzard) did a mass advertising campaign that changed the industry for an expansion (Wrath of the Lich King) that was crappy. It pulled in so many non social players into the game by using media personalities. I literally watched a decent social game go to the crapper in less than a year.
Sure the population of the game went up, hell it sky rocketed... however is that always a good sign when the average personality of the player base drops? flaming, trolling, and just plain being an ass became the norm, player harassment went from a thing that could get you a warning or possible ban if you were a real ass.. became something considered normal. Racism used to be an offense not tolerated, now its something seen every day in WOW and nothing is done..
Why? too many players and not enough control... thats what short sighted greed gets ya ... grats Blizzard you screwed the pooch, slept with the ex wife and now are reaping what you sowed...how many millions of players lost?.....yeah good luck with that.
Rift has been a blessing with its updates and the community is a little better.. I havent found any really large turds on there yet.. but im sure there is a few...
Far as Apps go.... to hell with them... havent seen a good one yet that was as fun as the games I play on PC and im not sorry for that... the future of apps is eye strain.. enjoy that.
Played: UO, LotR, WoW, SWG, DDO, AoC, EVE, Warhammer, TF2, EQ2, SWTOR, TSW, CSS, KF, L4D, AoW, WoT
Playing: The Secret World until Citadel of Sorcery goes into Alpha testing.
Tired of: Linear quest games, dailies, and dumbed down games
Anticipating:Citadel of Sorcery
How the hell is that valid criticism about WoW? Why do devs have to introduce systems that always have to cater to casuals as well? Just level up already and pretty much stop crying, only thing I can say to the author of the blog. As if leveling up is so damn hard in WoW.
As for Neverwinter, the gambling thing is real. Was one of the things that made me hate the game in the end. Neverwinter is so promising combat mechanics-wise, but the game is 0 in every other department. Story is bad, voice acting is bad, bugs everywhere, Pay to Win is their motto, implementation of systems like dungeons and PvP is horrific, without proper matchmaking, class balance is non-existent with 2-3 classes always extremely OP and so on. Not worth bothering with the game.
I don't understand why lockboxes bother people so much. Just pile them up, buy a key if you find a coupon and have some astral diamonds (the game's currency) to trade, sell them in the next mod when they're worth something. There's lots wrong with Neverwinter right now (some of which they are I hope fixing in today's patch) but lockboxes are not the problem.
Re: social interaction in MMOs, MMOs are descended from tabletop Dungeons and Dragons and have not shaken some of its features that are not conducive to interaction with strangers. For instance, leveling. We all level at different paces and the friends you make while leveling, you do not always keep. The same with gear progression: when I outgear you, we will drift apart, just because I am no longer interested in the content you need. Dungeons, or instances. A journey through a maze is really a single-player experience; a five man team doing a dungeon will tend not to explore much, and just barrel through as quickly as possible. With minimal time for chitchat.
I think a more social MMO would turn away from DnD and look to real-life sports for inspiration. Not that you have to give up on fantasy combat, just replace skill-less grinding with skill-based competitive PvE or PvP and replace levels / gear with titles & achievements that players can use to get into better teams.
It's intended to highlight content from the MMO blogosphere, yes. You may think it's a low point, but we like to think of it as celebrating a hobby many love and sharing work by others.
Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.

I beta tested Neverwinter and really liked the game. Unfortunately, their payment model turned me away from the game. I agree that is a gambling system that I really don't want to spend money on. If they had an optional subscription model or went with cash shop that some other games have, I would probably play.
Big time Rift supporter, so it's great to see what they are doing with wardrobes, since I spent HOURS messing with the wardrobes as well..
Now if they just made more races... I mean, they really only have 4.. (Two humans, two elves aren't 4 races, just changes to two of them)
