SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

EVE Online is a game with a story to tell—millions of them, actually. Every day friendships are formed, battles lost, revenge exacted. This week we sit down with Varc Grayback, leader of an elite PvP corporation, to hear his story.

Read more of Steven Messner's Chronicles of New Eden: Varc Grayback's Greatest Fight.

This sort of story is exactly why I love EVE, even if I don't play it. You do not get this kind of raw player emotion and story from any other game.

Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.

I think, in fact i know from personal experience we all (who have played it to any degree) had such battles.

My personal one was going into old man star (a renowned low sec system for faction warfare) in a small but perfect fleet, and for next 2-3 hours we just took out the opposition in gorilla style tactics using our agility and knowledge but, yes everyone who has flown for any length of time has these battles they can remember.

Eve isn't what a lot of people on tgis forum make it out to be, in fact its one of (if not the) most helpful bunch of players of any MMO (and yes ive played a lot of them) but sadly to many people focus on the 'scammers etc' but there is so much more to the game and the players that make it what it is

This post is all my opinion, but I welcome debate on anything i have put, however, personal slander / name calling belongs in game where of course you're welcome to call me names im often found lounging about in EvE online.

    Quazal,

You make an excellent point. Judging EVE Online because of the worst of its players is just like judging a religion on the worst of its offenders. My time in it hasn't always been positive, I've lost valuable ships, been the victim of a few unwarranted attacks, and encountered a few nasty individuals. But at the same time, EVE continues to be one of the most rewarding and meaningful experiences I've had in an online game.

Sometimes you need the bad stuff to help make the positive things stand out more.

in some games, your character is the center of the story... but so is everybody else's character.  in eve, you can be a legend but you have to actually do it yourself.  Every eve player's story is different.

if only more games were like that.

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

This is true, they are especially helpful to new players. GMs sometimes comes in and PM you if everything is alright. You do not get this in other game, as per my experience, it was the first time a GM asked me if I am okay (just out of the blue).

Odds are a player in your corporation is a CCP dev and he logged in this CCP toon to check. :)

I've personally dabbled with EVE multiple times and never, ever ran into a player that was just a straight up dick for no reason.

Sure, some can be annoying braggarts or know-it-alls, but MOBAs, survival games, and FPSs are all much, much worse in terms of toxic communities.

I like these stories.  I wish I had the time to drop into EVE to create some of my own, but I just don't.  Fun to read about though.

Great read, I'd like to see more of these "looks into communities" and player stories being posted on the site. :)

Reading stories like this brings back great memories of my EVE years, I hope we see more games like this in the future.

EVE is simply running agaist the clock...do you really belive that a 12 years-old space mmo with subscriptions will survive to Star Citizen? I don't think so, and I will be happy to see how a company like CCP gets what they deserve.

Fans will never forget what they have been doing to World Of Darkness franchise since they got the riights.

Eve is a niche game for a niche group of players.  This thread will probably go on forever with the back-and-forth between the pro's and con's.  The bottom line is that many players hate it for the many well documented reasons which I will not repeat in this post, and the niche group loves it and will defend it tooth and nail ...  and the beat goes on. After all of these years, I don't think anything can be said that has not been said already.  I say let the niche group enjoy their game.  They've earned it.

As Is often said eve is for wolves, and wolves need sheep (E.e carebears), that's its dilemma. That said great niche product which the market needs.

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D

Odds were high since I was in an NPC starter corp.

Pretty funny you are comparing Eve to vaporware.   As to the WOD franchise, it was the right decision to kill the development.

Heh those were the days. Ok, the EVE big battle wasn't that long ago, but it now feels like 'those were the days.'

You sound like a bitter ex player that got dropped by CCP like a bad habit.

World of Darkness got axed before reaching alpha, so no players have been wronged there. Not even a kickstarter project that took your money there.

Star Citizen, where is it? Not launched.

    2017, ...........maybe.

A lobby based instanced first person shooter.

So you are going to compare a first person lobby based multiplayer shooter that is not even launched to a sandbox mmo that is still growing, and a single open world.

Really, CCP must have hit you hard.

So what did you do to hate CCP that much?

I have to agree. Star Citizen is just over hyped shit like 90% of the new releases past the 6 years back.
