I don't think things will be radically different in 25 years' time, other than possible improvements in graphic fidelity. MMO's have progressed in the last 17 years, but anyone who played EQ 15 years ago will instantly recognize today's MMO game play.
Full-immersion VR is most likely 200 years away rather than 20 years...
It's a scorching summer day, Jun 18th. Everyone here is excited, because they are at E4 (formerly E3). The year is 2040 and the venue is said to be great. All of the panels gain a lot of attention, and it's no wonder. After all, retro is making a comeback! There are so many games, from Ditty kong adventure, Mario 64, and even The legend of zelda. There are also some newcomers to the genre who have amazingly created their own games based highly on retro themes such including 8bit technology, and being solely platformer in design. What a wonderful year for gaming. 2040 will surely go down in history as a year to be remembered.

think this post say it best you guys assuming will have VR are acting like in 20 years we went from going from cart an horse too the modern cars of now, it won't happen. even it tech keeps doubling at it current rate, it still won't happen...
VR beyond just a 3d image you stare at in a plastic hat, will be very complex an require a lot of testing. not only to create the world but too understand long term effect on the human body too exist in it.
also a side effect of such a world existing will kill many weak minded people, who would not be able to or want too separate the two reality s which could easily lead too a ban on the VR itself but that a decision for 200 years from now an we will won't hear about it.
VR will not be big in 2040, although it will likely have been attempted by then in some form. It will be as big as holographic monitors today.
In 2040, I would hope we would have at least as good of graphics as TERA has, without all of the invisible character and silhouette glitches. I would hope that the hardware will have come along, as far as allowing for vast worlds, with equally vast content, customization and options. I would hope that MMOs could truly utilize 1000's VS 1000's of player and nonplayer characters in a reasonable area, without lag-latency being any sort of real hindrance. I would hope AI would be developed to a point of allowing behaviors based on motivating factors, at least as good as EQN claimed they were to attempt.
2040 will not be much different than today, save some catastrophic event that could change the course of our world for a few generations. Even then, humanity quickly forgets the past over the course of only a generation or two. New styles will appear, old styles will be retro and still around. The hardware will slow down in growth, but will be greatly more than what we have today. The software will increase in size and capability, building on what these days deliver as a foundation for it. We may see more games, as the software to make games itself will likely become more user friendly.
I would guess that there will be at least 10 times the amount of MMOs as this site currently lists, but 90% or more will be crap. I would also guess however, that every genre that has been conceived of, will have some quality products within them. Unfortunately, solo-handholding-gps-nonexistent death penalty-every one is a special hero-lobby games will likely not be represented. Today's MMO gamers will complain that no one is making their games anymore and that 25 years ago was their golden age. Personally, it will be at that time that I will sit back and think back to today... and laugh.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre

Exactly what I was going to say.
And you won't even know it.
Log in to a super HD shiny pretty world.
Press dungeon button.
Get teleported to dungeon with PUG.
Press clear button.
Watch animated lightshow.
Roll dice for gear.
Repeat.
