Cory Jones of Cryptozoic and HEX Entertainment sat down virtually on Skype with me last week to give me my first taste of HEX: Shards of Fate. For those unfamiliar, HEX is one of Kickstarter’s first big success stories. Funded by fans and backers for over 2 million dollars back in 2013, now two years later HEX is getting closer and closer to its initial goal of being the first “MMORPGTCG”.

Ohhh, you know what I just recently switched to uBlock Origin. Most likely the culprit...thanks!

Ad block on, worked for me.
What's the difference between a digital trading card game and a MMO trading card game? In fact how is 1v1 MMO at all?

Try a MUD today at http://www.mudconnect.com/Hex will have a "Campaign" mode and PvE content, as well as grouping, based on my understanding, so dungeons, raids, guilds, etc. None of that is in yet, so I haven't really touched it since alpha, but I'll be back in once campaign and dungeons and stuff are released.

So right now it's as MMO as pong online or checkers online with a 1v1 format without grouping, raids, dungeons or guilds.

Try a MUD today at http://www.mudconnect.com/I agree. That is why I have not even looked at putting money into it. I want to try that stuff. I have played since it went to open beta but for me it is just an ok game at the moment that doesn't offer me anything I want that the game should have when finished. They seem to be working hard though.
Online auction house with in game OR real cash? Yeah...no thanks.
Most likely running NoScript.

Ummmmmmm, yeah, pretty much, lol. Hence, I'm not in there. I do hope that the PvE content is a little deeper than the Hearthstone PvE content, lol. Another reason I'm not playing it at the moment is due to UI scaling, or the lack thereof. They might have some updates for this, but don't really care until PvE is released anyway

First of all the over all idea sounds great.
The problem and there are several.First up popularity seems to rule over quality of gaming.Hearthstone for example is a terribly cheap idea but it is run by the popular Blizzard ,si as a cheap game it succeeds.Hex does not have the Blizzard ip to fall back on so even if it is 500x better it will not get the same player base.Sadly i do not agree with the way games are supported but it is the truth,i would rather see Hex succeed over cheap Blizzard products any day of the week.
Most of the better ideas are not in game yet,so it makes me far less interested.Ideas like armor/gear only matter if you actually have a full 3D avatar that moves through a world and not just one that sits on a board. It makes gear sound more like Equipment was in MTG card game.
I have longed for a complete mmorpg with combat done through cards. This game is trying to be that game but imo it will never reach those lofty heights,it would be the best game on the market if it did.
I will never write off this game and it's ideas and goals, but for now it is not nearly where it needs to be to attract me as a player.I hope this game will succeed,i guess with the 2 million backing it sort of has,but that amount of money does not go far in this day and age,not far at all.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
You must be thinking of some other game, because Hex was never on Steam.
It's a TCG (not a CCG like most other digital card games, including Hearthstone), that's how TCGs work. Trading is a big part of it. The model is that the PvP is a traditional TCG model while the PvE is 100% free to play. You can convert your time spent in PvE into PvP rewards, though it will be time consuming.
What this means is that the cards hold real money value like a TCG. There are cards worth up to about $80 right now. I've personally sold over $1500 worth of stuff, so it works.
You're right. I just checked and it was a game that I added to my Steam menu manually. Derp!
Thanks, man. I think I'll fire it up again tonight and see what's new.

Yeah...like i said ..no thanks. Biggest wallet will always win...so who cares if it "works"? Most games "work" does not mean i want to invest any time into them when people can just buy their way to the best. Only people win in that situation is a few people that sell cards to the wallet warriors...and oh ya, the dev's that just love the whales.
I downloaded it and played it for a short time before it had any PVE content. The issue I had was there was no possible way to progress without spending cash. There wasn't a way to earn pack or cards without spending cash. You get your base deck and 1 pack for completing something if I remember correctly. In my opinion this is where games like Hearthstone, Duel of Champions and other free 2 play card games excel. To me Hex had an extremely limited "Free 2 play" experience and it's unfortunate cause I've been following this game for a long time and looking forward to it. I don't know if it's still the same or it's changed at all, but hopefully it did.
One thing that really made me want to unistall was the fact I picked a deck at the very beginning and it gave me something I didn't pick. I even wrote to the devs and I didn't even get a response back. It was just very disappointing. I did play a few games before deciding to uninstall afterwards. It's too bad cause the game looks great.
Except that's not the case at all. The best deck for a long time was one of the cheapest. Tossing tons of legendaries into a deck doesn't make it good. I'm not sure you know how TCGs work. It's not like other games where you buy the best equipment and it's objectively better than anything else. If you want to buy a bunch of cards you are simply buying the ability to create more decks, not necessarily better decks.
Not to mention that limited play is a 100% level playing field and no amount of money can give you an advantage there.
As I mentioned before, the model for the game is that the PvE is the free to play part. You will be able to play the PvE 100% free all the way through. You can earn free PvE cards and equipment from that content. The PvP will not be directly free. However, you can take your PvE stuff and sell it to PvP players for platinum and use that to play PvP for free, but it will take time. This is all available now that the Frost Ring Arena is in, though it's just the one bit of PvE so it's not easy.
It's not fair to judge the f2p yet, though, because it's not really there yet. The model they are working towards is pretty solid (and they've hired an economist to make sure it all works). The PvE<->PvP interaction is already happening on a small scale, and when the full PvE is in then you'll have plenty to do for free.
