What do you think? Would it be possible to let an independent studio develop EQ3 with a kickstarter campaign? I guess all we EQ Fans want is a true EQ3 game. All Smed has to do is sell a license right?
Oh man I would give them alot of money just to have a true EQ Successor with tabtargeting and trinity.... :-D You see how much fame project 99 got?!
Honestly, I can sympathize that you want to recapture that past glory that was EQ. However, truth be told, it's to the point where you might as well say "EQ Fan" because making it plural almost seems silly now. I would love to see a throwback game, but the market is so teenie tiny that it's not even worth fighting over. LOOK! They basically said "Oh yeah, Project 99? Run with it dudes!" WTF?!?!? If that doesn't say they have no f$@ks to give, I don't know what does. EQ1 was a seriously niche game and the market was limited for it back in the day, even when there wasn't competition. It's got to evolve, though, if a company is going to care about developing it.
Oh! And even with all the "fame" Project99 got, I don't know that I've seen the server population hit 4 digits yet. It can be run on passion, but I just don't see it as a business.
This is a joke right. You are joking?
P99 hits 1500-1800 on busy nights, and well over 1000 concurrent players every single day. Hell, even the PVP server gets 300 or 400.
And all of that was before it as officially recognized.
EQ itself is getting a progression server and its generated more buzz in the past few weeks than anything EQNext has in the last year.
While you are correct it is a niche market, its only niche because 90% of what is considered the current MMO playerbase are not MMO players, they're single player gamers who came to MMO's because MMO's were turned into singleplayer online rpg's.
Regardless of the fact, a game getting 100-200k players is easily enough to be profitable and pay the bills, future development, etc. MMO's are not expensive to run, WoW only spends about 30cents to run the game for every dollar they take in, and they spend HUGE amounts of money on advertisement and customer service.

Not going to happen, like many of us you are better following Pantheon with a cautious eye. So far even with lack of kickstarter support I have more faith in this game.
I can totally see how unimportant games are in your life...
(BTW i agree with what you said about people vs games, but, come on man, lets be a little realistic here)
you can't distinguish between actual gaming and talking about gaming?
I can come here and put in my two cents if I have 2 minutes of free time, and I need at least 15 for a gaming session. Plus, if i come here so much, it should be an indication that I like forum pvp much more than video gaming.
Yes, gaming is that unimportant .. i would even come here instead of playing a game .. like now.

Why don't you look into Pantheon then. Its exactly that
Uhm...most people don't like to spend money on failed crowdfunding projects.
The fact is, that Pantheon doesn't even look better than EQ did 10 years ago.
SORRY, EQ fans want something from 2015, not from 1935.
Pantheon:
EQ1:
Speaking of shill. You post the oldest screenshot you could find of Pantheon? This is Pantheon:
That is an in game screenshot from the current Pantheon build.
Even comparing, the picture from Pantheon's earliest development looks like something I would like to explore. The screen from modern EQ looks so sanitized and bland, its a perfect representation of why we no longer play the game.
Way to come in and propagandize while we were in the middle of talking about people who do just that.

The problem is that Pantheon, like Vanguard, is more of the same from McQuaid: terrific ideas from a brilliant visionary who unfortunately has no business running a game development project. I have all the respect in the world for Mr. McQuaid for his ideas, but almost none for his ability as a manager. And that's not a huge criticism--management in that industry is a lot harder than I'm sure I even imagine. The man just doesn't have the weight he used to, and while I would be pretty excited about any project that had him as a consultant or a creative director, I'm worried that any project in which he isn't on a leash is going to go the way of Vanguard.
The things we love to hate about Smed--the fact that he's a politician, in essence--are exactly the same qualities that make him effective. He's a shiny salesman who spins the spin and fuels the hype train. He lies all the time, but every new empty promise makes it easier to forget the last one was a lie.
Now, don't get me wrong. I actually like the idea of a new EQ1, by which I mean a re-skinned version of EQ1 with updated graphics and UI. But that's never happening. Like it or not, EQ2 was an actual natural progression on the ideas of EQ1, and many of EQ1's most vocal fans rejected it. Where else do you go? Back to EQ1? Well, good news. EQ1's servers are totally still up. You can log on right this second. Want a more classic EQ experience? P99. Want progression? Wait a couple months and they'll make that happen for you too.
I cut my teeth on EQ1, and it's still hands down one of if not the greatest MMOs of all time. But updating EQ1 to make it competitive in a modern marketplace means abandoning exactly the things we're nostalgic about. Daybreak isn't going to have another Vanguard in their lineup, and they can see plainly what happened to Wildstar. EQ3 is already under development. By Smed. They're calling it Next.
Trouble is, I have a sneaking suspicion that EQN might turn out to be vapor anyway.
I agree with everything except Smed being effective. Pretty much no one in the gaming industry has respect for Smed and it's under his rule that SoE has drowned in the sea of mediocrity for the last decade. In fact; the only things they've made that aren't pure garbage are Planetside 2 and H1Z1.
That's a very low batting average among a multitude of failed games in the past 10 years. If anything Smed is too soft. He turned SoE into a giant ineffective family instead of a well oiled machine. Nothing about the man screams effective.
Even comparing, the picture from Pantheon's earliest development looks like something I would like to explore. The screen from modern EQ looks so sanitized and bland, its a perfect representation of why we no longer play the game.

I still play EQ, and FFXIV.
Regardless, Pantheon doesn't interest me because

2: He was hired by SoE again, a year or 2 ago, when SoE cost Sony millions in losses in 2014, he was the first one to be fired again, basically, Sony didn't think he was important enough to even have a job at SoE. Sony then sold SoE to daybreak, SoE was costing them millions in losses.
3: Pantheon looks like an indie game of extremely low quality.
4: While I would like a game in the same genre as EQ, I DO NOT, want a game, exactly like EQ, I can just play EQ instead!!!! Pantheon offers me nothing new, it looks like EQ, most EQ players DON'T WANT TO play EQ again, they just want the genre with new amazing graphics with good ideas. Pantheon isn't that game, not by a long shot.

Considering the size of the overall MMO market and how under served it has been with either a new title for the masses or niche targeted game, success can be had anywhere.
A game that captures 200k players would be niche in most regards, but could be very profitable.

You basically caught my drift on the second (main) point. It's a niche. 100-200K players might be like the highest you could expect to see. EVE would be an anomaly. As far as costs go, 30 cents on the dollar for WoW could be 80 cents on the dollar for someone with fewer subs. Remember that many of these costs are static. 80 cents on the dollar might be drastic, but it would definitely be more costly for smaller games to run. Plus, you've got initial investments to re-coop, plus you've got to mitigate risks involved with a niche game. I think it's a fine line to walk to say the least. However, I really do wish they'd sell IP if they kill it.
The lead developer was the lead on Vanguard, got in trouble with money because of his drug habit and SoE had to bail him out.
Can you link the source of information you have to make such factual statements about Brad having a drug problem or it being the cause of Vanguards money problems?
I'm sure SOE was eager to partner with a drug addict that stole so much money from his previous partner that his company failed, right? That makes total sense.
It could be, looks awesome for direction but I would think twice before giving them any money. The lead developer was the lead on Vanguard, got in trouble with money because of his drug habit and SoE had to bail him out. Years later he comes up with this game, funding gone to cover as Brad put's it, for his personal expenses. The rumor is it went to drug money again. Investors wont touch the game and now they are so broke that most of the team working on this are doing so for free in their spare time.
I hope this game makes it as I long for a modern EQ1 come to life and I think Brad has the skill do bring that. He was one of the key Devs working on EQ1. If you put money into Pantheon, do so knowing it may be for nothing and end up someones nose. Myself, I am waiting for the game to release or open beta before I drop cash on the game. I really hope it turns out to be something but as far as I see it. There is no company working on a spiritual successor to EQ1 till I know it has a hope in hell to release. =-

Google it, its everywhere!!!! Interviews with former staff even.
EDIT: And SoE taking a gem from a druggy, sure. I would have, they didnt get in bed with him, just rescued the project.

Very little of the rumors surrounding McQuaid make sense, though he has admitted to mistakes in managing Vanguard. You'll find no "factual" statements, only unsubstantiated accusations made by an ex-Sigil employee. Read what the ex-employee says about himself and its hard to take him seriously. Brad was employed by SOE several times, and the claim that he was fired during SOEs massive layoffs is unfounded, though possible. Many people were layed off back in 2013 when they started cutting back to focus on EQ Next. It was also when he started Visionary Realms and began work on Pantheon.

You're right, there are no substantiated reports of drug abuse, specifically. However, it was a well-known fact that Brad has been a massive d-bag over the years, up until, and including, the VERY well documented parking-lot firing of the entire Sigil staff. I'm sorry, but calling your entire company outside and telling them "You're all fired!" is possibly the biggest dick move ever. Oh!! And the next day SOE announced that they had acquired Sigil's key assets. Soooooo, not like he didn't know it was coming. At least HE managed to get a job out of it, though.

Why on earth do you want to see another half built Kickstarter game made? Look at Landmark. When a developer can start selling something before they finish it, it never really gets finished. They will ultimately start work on yet another Kickstarter game to bring in more cash to keep the company going and the cycle just repeats itself.
Trust me you don't want this. You want the developer to find financing and finish the game. Star Citizen is the exception to this rule they are an anomaly not the norm.
What is the appeal of tabtargetting and trinity? We've already got 100+ games that have that. Why don't you just play one of those? And EQ and EQ2 are still around. Have you done everything there is to do there? Why do people have to force their old ways on people who are attempting to make a change and possibly make things better? That's all EQ Next is doing; trying to come up with something new and refreshing. And people keep confusing EQ Landmark with EQ Next. We've barely seen ANYTHING of the actual game that will be EQ Next. EQ Landmark is not a direct representation of EQ Next. So stop pretending that it is.
Eq1 was not about tabtargetting and trinity, lol. It was about exploring and socializing. Basically it was a 3d-chat :-)
There 100+ games with tabtargetting and faceroll solo quest hubbing. Yeah. Not what "we" want.
And "we" are not forcing our gameplay to others. "We" just want a graphical update to our 16 year old unique game, in a market that is flooded with games that actually no one likes to play.

Oh woe is you. You're so oppressed.
I know it may seem the same to you, but EQ today is nothing like classic EQ. Virtually every single thing about the game has changed, and not just a little.
No one is trying to suggest that anyone take away your single player MMOs. We only want a game or two that is actually built around group play and immersion rather than solo play and convenience.

Plus, you've got initial investments to re-coop, plus you've got to mitigate risks involved with a niche game. I think it's a fine line to walk to say the least. However, I really do wish they'd sell IP if they kill it.

Can you link the source of information you have to make such factual statements about Brad having a drug problem or it being the cause of Vanguards money problems?
I'm sure SOE was eager to partner with a drug addict that stole so much money from his previous partner that his company failed, right? That makes total sense.

There 100+ games with tabtargetting and faceroll solo quest hubbing. Yeah. Not what "we" want.
And "we" are not forcing our gameplay to others. "We" just want a graphical update to our 16 year old unique game, in a market that is flooded with games that actually no one likes to play.
Currently playing: EverQuest
Waiting for Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen
Oh woe is you. You're so oppressed.
I know it may seem the same to you, but EQ today is nothing like classic EQ. Virtually every single thing about the game has changed, and not just a little.
No one is trying to suggest that anyone take away your single player MMOs. We only want a game or two that is actually built around group play and immersion rather than solo play and convenience.
