EQ2 becoming the new champion of MMOs?

pingopingo Member UncommonPosts: 608

Detested by wow fans, hated by all other everquest haters for its name, hated by everquest 1 fans for being different.

However, is the ugly duck the game that will kill everything in its path? right now while wow is getting flamed left and right, and EQ2 finally gets its pvp along with its second expansion - is it EQ2s turn to shine?

Soon the last juices of SWG will be gone... EQ1 is getting really old and planetside is going free. Is SOE betting everyone on this? are they really that made at blizz, webzen and NCsoft?

I have been playing Eq2 for awhile now just waiting for the pvp. I cna honestly say that I don't understand why this game doesn't get as much popularity as WoW. It is everybit just as good as well but with better graphics. I understand that alot of people can't run it on high graphics but that isn't the games fault. I hope to see that EQ2 starts getting a larger fan base because I think it deserves it. As far as Vanguard goes I to will probably give it a shot when it is released.

Not really mate. A distant second at most.

Well, it looks like it's getting its chance. The newest free trial package (full game + 30 days) from Fileplanet has the newbie areas overflowing, and I do mean overflowing. I just started the trial myself this morning, and I couldn't find a single creature that didn't have a line of people waiting to jump on it, let alone a quest mob. Of course, that made the newbie island a massive headache, but I guess there's not a lot that can be done about that short of a complete redesign. In any case, most of those people will eventually spill out into the larger world, so I guess we'll see how many choose to stick around after the 30 days are up. The more that I think about it, though, reducing the number of players in the newbie island instances would definitely be a good thing. The inability to complete quests due to overpopulation was a really poor first impression of the game; it wouldn't be so bad if people wanted to group, but apparently everyone just wanted to figure out the controls and get used to the UI at that point.

WoW is a very fun game, has a huge franchise name behind it (yes, bigger than everquest) and it will play on ANY computer (even my sucky dell at work).

EQ2 is a better game in every way (in my opinion) but you need a high end system to get the most out of it. Plus, SOE has a bad reputation, mostly undeserved (you notice I said mostly)-those things combined are EQ2's obstacles.

Mature gamers will choose EQ2: they can afford a nice system and are less likely to boycott a company based on hearsay. Younger or immature (notice I said or--not all young gamers are immature) gamers will avoid games "because my friend said to" or because "I heard that it sucked". Mature gamers are more likely to form their own opinions based on their own experiences.

LAUGH OUT LOUD NEWBIE I LAUGH OUT LOUD TO YOU!

Nah EverQuest 2 is not even anywhere close to beating out any of the titles out there now, except for DDO but thats not even an mmo. So that one doesn't count like others have said, byt the time SOE gets it together Vanguard will be out, and SOE's flagship EverQuest2 Will be down on Davey Jones Locker.

    Whoever thinks that:
    1. Server merges
    2. Vast amount of people hating the company, and bashing them on every forum not owned or controled by them.
    3. Being the laughing Stock of the MMO gaming industries.

Is the keys to a successfull game, are horribly mistaken for what we call a CRAPPY GAME.

EQ2 is beating the pants off of most other games out there. There are only probably 3 or 4 games that have more subscriptions lol how do you even get the ideas for your sentences?

You just seem like you haven't played since launch, and that is a shame because it's the best fantasy MMORPG out there-tied with DAoC.image

You do realize that Microsoft is probably the most hated software company out there, and yet the have 93% of the OS market? Apple who is loved by all, has a piddly 3%. I think that adequatly discredits that argument.

It truly is an amazing game. It probably has one of the best communities I've ever seen.

I started playing again about a month or two ago, and the servers were dead. But then I played the trial again and the island was overflowing. I rejoined at a bad time.

The whole game seems to be improving tenfold.

I would talk some more about it, but it seems the pizza's done...

First off, you must not have a real good computer, because WoW's graphics can't even touch EQ 2's. They're like, 2 completely different universes. One real, one cartoon.

Second, you can't start off as a Ranger. You can't even use a ranged weapon within the first half hour. You have to be at least, what, level 10 and a citizen in Queynos or Freeport to even touch a ranged weapon.

Nah cause i hate Apple, its for people not ummm.. how do you say.... <Censored> Begins with an H and ends in an O, and rhymes with Roh Moe. Did you know that Bill Gates Single Handedly SAVED your Beloved CrApple Computer brand? 3 Years ago when Apple was nearly broke and bankrupt, Bill Gates Stopped by his old friends office, the owner of Apple computers. And made a business proposition to keep apple computers brand alive and kicking. With that being said, how can this show Microsoft is hated? I think its you that are confused.

I dont see flames and flames of people burning Microsoft, However i do see this on Sony, and if you would like i will post links to these threads. I'd like to see you match the amount of Flame forum posts on Microsoft, as there is to Sony. I can guarantee you that i will find 3 x's more burning Sony, for their horrid antics, and terrible customer support.

Actually, that has been changed. You now pick your class when you create your character. Thank goodness.

LoL you tell em man, i been trying to, some of these people just drank way too much of the SOE kool-aid, i swear sometimes its like if it said in the Patch notes to EQ2's launcher, BUSH TO BE PRESIDENT OF WORLD VOTE NOW! They would all vote for Bush, AGAIN. This is not "people we are dealing with but what i like to call, the Addicts. They just dont want to loose all the time they spent playing the game, and working on building their character and reputation. One day, they will let go. But not without a flame war.

I'm not going to come here and say EQ2 is the best MMO above all others bar none and will soon dominate the MMO industry. That's extremely unrealistic. Even though the game IS getting noticably better, the fact remains that when the game first shipped it was a huge letdown to a large number of people. Some people don't forget things like that (just check the posts on this forum for proof). I can understand these people to a certain extent. You wait years and years for a game to release only to have it nowhere near where the hype made it sound.

However, what does really get on my nerves is people who constantly say everyone who likes EQ2 is just a blindless fanboy who loves everything SOE does, and that eventually they'le "come around." First let me say, I've played EQ2 for over a year now. I've had my share of complaints about the game, trust me. There have been a lot of things they've done that I don't agree with, and I can rant for hours about minor to major complaints I still to this day have about the game. In fact, I quit the game for 3 months to go play WoW full time at one point. But do you know what? I came back. Not because I'm addicted, not because I thought WoW sucked, but because I genuinely have FUN playing EQ2. Despite all the complaints I have about the game, it is still (to me) the best MMO on the market right now despite what so many people say about it.

So you can have your opinions about hating the game, hell even go ahead and flame it. I really don't care anymore. Just dont come to these forums and say that people who don't share your opinions are idiots and blindless fanboys. Their opinions are no less valid than your own, and what you are doing is nothing more than a hypocritical double standard.

Schutzbar - Human Warrior - Windrunner Alliance - World of Warcraft
Nihilanth - Kerra Paladin - Blackburrow - EverQuest II
    XBL Gamertag - Eagle15GT

    lol

Vanguard is going to be a great game.

As far as EQ2 goes. I personally think it's the best MMO on the market right now. I've played WoW for 2 months...what a waste. The most annoying, unchallenging game ever. Guild Wars was more fun than WoW. EQ2 is a great game though, and the next expansion is going to put the cherry on top.

EQ2 has more players than most MMO's out there. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that people like this game.

EQ2 has improved a lot since launch.

The problem is it has improved a lot by adding bells and whistles and taking hits like dropping the class tree system.

The real problems are so inbedded in the games basic design that they will never be able to fix it. Successive project managers at the games inception changing, refusing to do what the suits said, getting sacked for not implementing what they knew wouldn't work etc etc led to no basic vision (hate using that word but its spot on here) for the game.

Everything from the way Freeport city was designed. the class system, 'we aren't about pvp', ' we are doing pvp'.  The problems with the game are fundamental - always reacting, instead of having long term vision and goals.

I hate WoW, but its design at the basic level has always been strong. If Blizzard wasn't so dumb about getting expansions out, they would be dominating the MMORPG arena even more than they are.

Everquest 2 the new champion of MMO's? lets stay realistic, shall we?

Everquest 2 has improved a lot and is now a pretty good game but does still not tip to the quality of its rival, World of Warcraft.

  • Ranma13Ranma13 Member Posts: 747

EQ2 has improved leaps and bounds from when it first launched, removing much of the tediousness and improving vastly on many fronts. In its current state, it's a good game. Not perfect, but pretty darned good. World of Warcraft has its merits but so does this game.

I find it interesting how everyone compares EQ2 to WoW instead of other games. Perhaps it's because EQ2's the only game that's in any position to offer WoW any competition?

SOE has done alot to the game over the year that its been out. so you cant say they dont care about the game or the people that play it. Sony knows that bilzz beat them in the first year. though bilzz has yet to come out with an expansion and enough content to keep gamers playing. blizz has always been like this i remember playing D2 for many years and they made one expansion off a pretty good game and left it like that addeding nothing else to keep the gamer coming back. now they are doing their fisrt MMO which is really easy to play i tried it out but wasnt for me. i know alot of people that still play but its the same game that was realesed more than a year ago. hey if blizz wanted to stay on top they would of already had the expansion out by now keeping everyone from leaving the game. Sonys is on its second one already and they have a plan to keep it coming like this 1-2 expansion every year to keep the gamer busy. yah u could argue why mess with a game that has been so successful. though things do get old over time and out dated and bliz doesnt seem to know that. bliz kind of looks like they just wanted some quick cash for other projects. i still have yet to hear the date on the realese of this new expansion WOW has. bliz is a pure gaming developer as for SOE they are being runned by sony which has other projects that need funding. WOW made so much money and yet still is lacking a new expansion. thats just my outlook of what im seeing between both games. in my opinion.=)

Think this about covers it.EQ2 system specs has always been a killing factor for many.

It is gaining lots of ground  mainly with mature gamers.

Though I do not agree on the example of the class tree (it was a good change and class trees do not add depth, they just make the first 20 first levels less diverse), it is true that SOE has a sad policy of wanting to attract a wider target audience without caring how it affects their existent customers. The simplification of crafting or quest-giver icons are examples of this.

Still, fortunately, they haven't gone too far like they did with SWG, and judging by the failure of NGE to attract a wider audience, I think it's safe to say we won't see any radical gameplay changes, but only upgrades to what already exists.

The KoS achievement trees, for instance, is a very, very nice change. They don't need the grind of EQ's AAs, they are not class-defining as WoW's talent trees, but they do add useful abilities and variety in character development.

    Currently playing:
    * City of Heroes: Deggial, Assault Rifle/Devices Blaster. Server: Defiant.
    * City of Villains: Snakeroot, Plant/Thorns Dominator. Server: Defiant.
