Buying a TV to play games on Need Suggestions.

Basically I want to become uber lard ass and lie down on my bed with my back up against some pillows while playing ESO. I was originally planning on straight up buying a PS4 to play it on, but that would sacrifice so much in regards to performance and yadayadayada. My computer monitor is 23" so even if I moved it closer to my bed I would have to sit up to see it. So my plan now is to run a long HDMI cable to my tv in my room from my computer. The problem is my tv is like 10 years old and does not have an HDMI port. So I need to buy a new TV.
I went to Best Buy and Micro Center yesterday to look at some and spent most of my time on my phone trying to research ones that I was interested in. The stores do not post that much information on the tag besides frame rate or 1080p or whatever. I'm just trying to find a tv that will give me great image quality. I do not really care if the input lag is terrible because I am not playing Call of Duty. I will be mainly using it for RPG's and Netflix.
I'm looking for one that's roughly 45-55" and around $600-700. Although I was even considering saving another $400 to buy a 4k tv because those looked awesome as fuck. Idk though. Just give me some suggestions. Right know I'm eyeing a Sony Bravia 50" or a Samsung 4k 50" (I can't remember the name it's at best buy).

I actually play in bed myself!!! Welcome to the club! I'm not a lard ass though, so you might have to do some additional work to meet that requirement. I'd recommend stocking up on chocolate easter eggs around this time of year. Buy like crates of them
Right now I'm running a 42" LG Plasma. A couple recommendations, based on my experience. First, I'd go with LED. Plasma is still some of the best color, but LED gets pretty damn close and the reds are amazing. Also, they say that burn-in and life-span of Plasma is much improved now, but I see temporary image burn-in quite frequently. It's almost like lazy pixels. Mostly in dark scenes. Also, I have this odd mosquito noise thing happening on my display at the moment. Again, mostly an annoyance, but it's still annoying when you are really just looking for a crisp, clean image.
As far as the 4K goes, bigger isn't always better. Remember that it simply scales things. In the case of MMOs that means it's generally scaling things like text down. So unless there are settings in the game to scale the UI, you're basically playing at 1024x768 anyway, just because that's the only resolution you can read stuff at. Right now I run my accessibility options (font size) at 150%. Thanks old people!!!
Also, buy a USB extender. I used wireless for a long time (both USB and Bluetooth), but you run into problems with communication so it'll just do something like thisssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
Now I use a usb extender along with a keyboard that has an additional USB port for my mouse.

OMG, if you're looking ahead to the future, then 4K is definitely the way to go. I mean support will probably be sparse at the moment, but I'm definitely looking into getting one. Also, just do a check on the reviews. I believe most 4k TVs will come with a scaler of some sort, probably external. If it's external, check the price on it (in case you need to replace it). Also, I'd check and see how they handle actual 4K content, like if it switches automatically or not. OH!!! And check that the content being fed into the unit is NOT 4k because it's not likely you'll get 4k content, at least not yet. So you want to make sure the scaler doesn't suck.

Make sure it has a Gaming or PC mode.
The HTPC I have I run at 720p just for this very issue - you can't read anything sitting on the couch otherwise.
But that doesn't necessarily mean I would buy a 720p TV just for use with it. I would, as Crazy advised below - check out the scaler.
OLED screens are very pricey right now. What I think the other guy meant was LED backlit LCD screens which is pretty well all LCDs these days. Most good LCD TVs are very adequate for running games @ 1080P.
And about 4K screens... unless you're running 2 GTX 980s in SLI (and the game supports SLI well) you'll get very low FPS running a game at 4K. 4K is 3840 X 2160... that 8.3 Million pixels that need to be processed and rendered by your video card(s) compared to the 2.1 Million in 1080p.
4K TVs are just "future proof" conspicuous consumption right now since there are very few things that will even play at that resolution. Most TV is still broadcast at 720P.
Hooked-up to a PC means you'll either be running everything at a lower rez or suffering big performance hits unless you're willing to spend $1200+ on GFX cards.
Just get any decent name-brand 120 or 240 HZ, LED-backlit LCD screen and you're all set.

I have a 55inch Sharp LCD I run games on from time to time. With some games it can be hard to read text from a distance but I'm usually right up on the screen for immersion which is great. I prefer a 3 monitor setup for ESO which I run a lot of games on if they support it and it's really enjoyable.
If I were you I would watch 4k reviews on youtube to get an understanding of how it's actually working out for a lot of people (do a search for 4k gaming reviews in general and specifically for the exact TV you want to buy).
I would also see how ESO looks on the TV you intend to buy in the store first, taking note of what machine it's being run on and with what cards if possible (best thing is knowing someone who already has the same setup you want and get their feedback).

Definitely this. Try to find out the input lag on the TV. Way back when Modern Warfare 2 came out I was getting wrecked online. Found out my input lag was around 110ms (Old Sony Bravia LCD) doing some crude Guitar Hero calibration tests. Bought a Panasonic Plasma and the same tests were showing near 0 input lag, and my online performance went way up. Most new TVs will have a game mode that will cut out some processing to improve the input lag.
Well... for comparison purposes, I have my PS4 hooked up to a Samsung LED backlit LCD with a somewhat sluggish 75 ms input lag. I play NHL2015 on it quite a bit which is a much faster sports action game than any part of ESO will ever be. I have 0 complaints.

That is good to know. I plan to play NHL 15 on it as well on 360.
Check this out its a 50 inch sceptre tv I have the 32 inch one and its great they are cheap beause the built in speakers on the thing kind of suck but i have external speakers and its a non issue. its only 329$

I buy most of my electronics from here. They got good deals.
I have a Samsung LE40C530 40-inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p LCD TV. Till this date it's really great! I use it primarily for gaming on my PC. Sadly they discontinued making them!
One of the great features is the 1920x1080 HD 16:9 High Resolution that many other brands lack, even with a lot of the newer models coming out. I have tried other brands like Sony, Panisonic, VIZIO, and LG that limit you or do not not have options for Aspect Resolution.
TV's with AR feature makes a huge different in quality in my opinion.

People confuse LED and LCD all the time
LED is simply the type of backlighting that the TV uses. They're all LCD's.
LCD = Liquid Crystal Display. This is the pixel array. What happens is those pixels generate color, but do not generate light. So think of it like a Piece of red glass, if you shine a flashlight through it, the flashlight projects that red image outword. Same idea.
All LED means is that they use Light Emitting Diodes to backlight the LCD rather than a more traditional light emission source.

Go plasma, they are cheap and you can get a nice sized one in that price range. They have the best color and no blurring during fast moving scenes. I have had mine for 4 years now no, problems.
I used to use mine for what you are going to, but I always had a hard time reading the text so I stopped. I also have a kid now that uses the TV, soooo while she does that I game with 2 monitors instead

Samsung and Sharp have the best picture as far as I am concerned. If you have speakers or are using headphones sound should not matter so you can go with a cheaper model that has sub par sound. Honestly, there can be a ~300 dollar difference in TVs and the only real difference is the speakers.
I tend to buy the high end picture and low end speaker models. I think that gives the best bang for your buck and I always have sound coming from off of the tv speakers anyway.
